REPORT 0F MARY KAY ASH

By Nur Immaniah binti Suhaimi

On May 12, 1918, Mary Kay Ash was born in Hot Wells, TX. Married at 17 and
a mother of three, Mary Kay Ash started working in 1939 for Stanley Home
Products. Early on, she distinguished herself as a successful salesperson,
hosting parties to encourage customers to make purchases. In 1952, the
company World Gifts was so impressed by her talent that they hired her.
However, she quit her job a decade later because they passed her up for a
promotion and a raise. They gave the job to a man that Ash had trained.. Mary
Kay Ash Fed up with her mistreatment in the traditional workplace, Mary Kay
Ash decided to build her own business from scratch. Starting with an initial
investment of $5,000, the 45-year-old entrepreneur started Mary Kay in 1963
with her first storefront in Dallas, TX.
She used her favorite color pink on the packaging as a way for the products to
stand out on white bathroom countertops. Within its first year, Mary Kay was a
profitable company. Five years later, the company went public. The secret to
Mary Kay’s success was the employee incentive program. With this business
model, Mary Kay revolutionized sales and marketing, while also providing
many women with a way to attain financial success on their own.
Mary Kay Ash had her sales consultants buy the products at wholesale prices
and then sell them at retail to their customers. As an incentive, sales consultants
who recruited new sellers into the Mary Kay family picked up an extra
commission. In 1969, Ash began the tradition of rewarding her first crop of top
five sellers with a brand new rose color Cadillac Coupe de Ville. They also
donned fur coats and the signature diamond bee pin. To this day, top earners are
still rewarded with the “Mary Kay Career Car.” However, the original pink
Cadillac now comes in a more subdued hue.

Core values
Mary Kay has core values such as “GO GIVE”. Mary Kay's business is based
on the principle of GO GIVE, which is to help others without reciprocation. In
addition “GOLDEN RULE “ Mary Kay believes in the 'GOLDEN RULE'
which is 'Treat others as you would like others to treat you'. Next ,”MAKE
OTHERS FEEL IMPORTANT “ .Believe in efforts to make others feel
important. Then “RIGHT PRIORITIES &"BALANCE IN LIFE GOD is FIRST,
FAMILY is SECOND, CAREER is THIRD”.

RESEARCH
In my research, I found that Mary Kay Ash uses 2 types of marketing,
namely Single Level Marketing and Multi Level Marketing.
Single-level marketing (or sales) is one type of compensation plan for
direct sales companies. Multilevel marketing, however, is far more
common. In SLM sales associates are paid only for their own personal
sales activity.Multi level Marketing is they do not recruit other sales
reps and derive income. Multilevel marketing (MLM) is a business
model that involves unsalaried, hierarchical sales teams selling
products directly to consumers in conjunction with recruiting
additional company sales representatives.

Summary
Instead, in 1963, Ash founded her own company (with an investment
of five thousand dollars) to sell a skin cream to which she had
purchased the manufacturing rights. She named her company "Beauty
by Mary Kay Ash. Reproduced by permission of Halcyon Associates
" Ash was determined to offer career opportunities in her company to
any woman who had the energy and creativity required to sell Mary
Kay cosmetics.
Before long she had a force of female sales representatives who were
eager to prove themselves. Ash's second husband had died in 1963, a
month before her company was established. Her oldest son helped
guide her through the start-up phase of her company. Three years later
she married Melville J. Ash, who worked in the wholesale gift
business. Believing it was important to reward hard workers, Ash
gave away vacations, jewelry and pink Cadillacs to her top
performers. (By 1994 she had given away seven thousand cars valued
at $100 million.)
With goals such as these to shoot for, her salespeople made the
company a huge success. Within two years sales neared $1 million.
The company's growth continued, and new products were added.
Every year since 1992 Mary Kay Cosmetics made Fortune magazine's
list of five hundred largest companies. In addition company was listed
in a book entitled The 100 Best Companies to Work for in America. It
now employs over 475 thousand people in over twenty
