10 Top EHS
Trends for 2022
10 EHS TRENDS FOR 2022

New Year is a time to reflect on the past 12 months and to

plan for the next. 2021 was as turbulent as 2020 with the
pandemic continuing to disrupt business and communities
across the globe. EHS professionals had to anticipate the
rapidly changing landscape of risk. Let’s take a look at
some aspects that affected us last year and how you might
act and improve upon them this year.
1

COVID-SECURITY

Vaccines, therapeutics, community monitoring and

infection control have given us hope in tackling Covid-19.
We will face new variants which will continue to challenge
us. It is human nature for stringent measures to wane after
time, and complacency to set in. Continue to encourage
social distancing, hand washing and mask-wearing at
work, and lead by example. You will be at the forefront of
retaining and policing these measures.
2

PSYCHOSOCIAL RISK

We saw the introduction of ‘ISO 45003:2021:

Occupational health and safety management -
Psychological health and safety at work - guidelines for
managing psychosocial risks’ in June last year. Work-
related stress is the number one cause of employee
sickness absence. Set goals for the management of
psychosocial risks, champion ways to promote good
mental health and ensure managers have clear roles and
responsibilities towards reducing stress at work.
3

HOMEWORKING

For many. the shift to homeworking can no longer be

discounted as being a temporary measure. More and more
people now work in a hybrid world. After a steep learning
curve, employers should be better positioned to offer
employees structured homeworking. Work collaboratively to
assess risks, build robust communications and transparent
homeworking policies.
4

SUPPLY CHAINS

Global supply chains have been shaken to their core by the

pandemic. Now more than ever, we are realising how
important it is to have a resilient supply chain of materials
and contractors to keep business moving. You have a key
role in ensuring safety within the supply chain. Evaluate the
risks created by unsafe third parties and look to improve
the visibility of their safety management and performance.
5

TRAINING SHORTFALLS

Employers believe school leavers and graduates are

increasingly unprepared for the world of work. This implies
a shift from learning in the classroom towards learning at
work. Consider how you’re positioned to help young people
gain the safety skills that they need. e-Learning courses
will continue to be an accessible way for individuals to
expand their knowledge, but workers will also need a more
sophisticated, personalised approach to blended learning,
coaching and mentoring.
IMPROVING MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS

Subscribers will have been using the extensive resources

provided by Red-on-line to maintain EHS management
systems. Internationally there have been plenty of changes
to legislation, codes of practice and guidance last year and
we will continue to keep you up to date with legislative
changes in 2022. Time to spring clean and update your
legal registers.

7

DRIVING

Last year around one-third of all road traffic collisions

involved people driving for work and countless other
incidents involved people travelling to or from their
workplace. Unlike a fixed workplace these risks can be
difficult to control. Review your driving policies and engage
with workers on how to make journeys, drivers and
vehicles safe, particularly in the coming winter months.
8

VENTILATION

Effective ventilation is an important measure to control

airborne pathogens. The adequacy of ventilation in some
workplaces was found to be woefully short of adequate.
Improving ventilation was at the expense of keeping
people warm at work. Look beyond temporary measures
and consider capital expenditure on permanent fixes.
Identify poorly ventilated areas, use CO2 monitors, improve
both natural and mechanical ventilation and ensure air
cleaning and filtration units are hygienically maintained.
9

ENVIRONMENT

Arguably the ‘top of the bill’ for societal concerns is global

warming and the tremendous strain that we put on
resources and our natural world. Businesses will come
under increased scrutiny not only from external parties but
also from workers within. Engage with the workforce on
their concerns over environmental matters and ensure
sustainability is integrated into any future planning
agendas. Also, review your continuity plans for extreme
weather conditions including floods.
10

ADAPT YOURSELF

As well as advising co-workers how to adapt to change,

we have had to adapt as individuals too. Look after your
wellbeing. Consider your future and how you can flourish in
the profession. Stay one step ahead of the game through
continuing professional development. Red-on-line can help
by keeping you up to date through our regular webinars,
articles and blogs.

The common thread throughout this New Year’s wish list is

that of business resilience. Within our profession, a lot of
lessons have been learnt and new ways of working are
being assimilated. Business leaders have turned to EHS
professionals for much-needed reference points, and they
will do so again this year.
