SCROLL COMPRESSOR
The scroll compressors are consists of two involutes or Archimedean spirals (Figure-2). One spiral is positioned inside
the other to form a series of crescent-shaped pockets. During compression the upper spiral remains stationary and the
lower one, being eccentrically mounted on the drive shaft, describes an orbital rather than a simple rotary motion.

3
FIGURE- 1

FIGURE- 2

4
How a Scroll Compressor works:

Compression in the scroll is created by the interaction of an orbiting spiral and a stationary
spiral. A refrigerant enters the outer openings as one of the spirals orbits.

The open passages are sealed off as gas is drawn into the spiral.

As the spiral continues to orbit, the gas is compressed into two increasingly smaller pockets.

By the time the gas arrives at the center port, discharge pressure has been reached.

Actually, during operation, all six gas passages are in various stages of compression at all
times, resulting in nearly continuous suction and discharge.

Refrigerant enters the compressor at the suction connection and flows around the motor’s housing and enters at the bottom
side through the openings and oil droplets separate from the refrigerant and fall into the oil sump. All suction refrigerant
passes through the electrical motor, ensuring full motor cooling, after that the refrigerant enters the scroll elements.

5
SEMI-HERMETIC COMPRESSOR
These Semi hermetic reciprocating compressors are accessible –hermetic type. Compressor and motor are enclosed in
a hermetically sealed housing, with out shaft seal. The compressors are equipped with an oil sight glass through which
the oil quantity and its conditions in the crankcase can be observed. These compressors can be disassembled in the field
for service.

Refrigerant-cooled motor –compressors have an oil pressure lubrication system. This system is supplied by a positive
displacement oil pump, working in either direction. It is protected by a screen and is made accessible for quick oil
pressure checking by a Schrader check valve. The use of oil pressure control safeguards the lubrication system. These
compressors can be provided with capacity control (optional). The use of unloading provides optimal part load capacities.

F. MICROPROCESSOR CONTROLLER
These Packaged units are provided with a microprocessor control board incorporating the following features:
- BALANCE LOADING OF COMPRESSORS: The unit’s electronic control automatically operates lead/lag sequence of compres-
sors. This is to load the compressors evenly over long periods of operation. If required however, compressor-1 can also be set to
always lead. In this case, compressor-1 always starts first and stops last. (Selectable through dip switch setting on control board).
- PUMP DOWN FUNCTION: In units equipped with pump down system, the controller provides the time delay between
solenoid’s opening and compressor starting to equalize the pressure in the system necessary for compressor to start-
up. (Selectable through dip switch setting on control board).
- COMPRESSOR ANTI-RECYCLING PROTECTION: The controller has a built-in 3 minutes minimum off timer for
compressor. This is for compressor protection in case of accidental manual re-set or immediate re-cycling of thermo-
stat due to load demand.
- COMPRESSOR LOCK-OUT FUNCTION: If any of the unit’s safety control trips due to abnormal conditions, the elec-
tronic controls locks out the compressor after a pre-determined timing preventing a re-start unless attended by a quali-
fied service technician. The unit can be re-started through thermostat re-set after ensuring safe system conditions.
- FAULT DIAGNOSTICS: In case of system fault, LED’s on the board emits a flashing signal indicating where the fault
is. This is to guide the service technician in identifying the fault.
- DIGITAL I/O’s: The unit’s control board is compatible to operate with a DDC controller or any standard 24V a.c.
thermostat commercially available.
- SEQUENTIAL CONTROL: With input signals from the thermostat, the motors in the equipment is started in sequential
order: supply fan – condenser fan – compressor; at a pre-determined timings.

G. COMPRESSOR OVER LOAD PROTECTOR

provides a mean for checking the system refrigerant charge.

8
OPTIONAL ITEMS
A. MIXING BOX
The optional mixing box has front return air arrangement with fresh air opening is always from the side of the unit and is
fixed on the same unit for (PRX020 - PRX070) while it will be shipped separately for (PRX080 - PRX095). Additional
accessories such as return and fresh air dampers (oppose blade) and rain hood can be provide.

B. CAPACITY CONTROL
On semi-hermetic compressors, capacity control is achieved by cycling compressors on/off and cylinder unloading. The
use of unloading provides good part load capacities.

C. HOT GAS BYPASS CONTROL

Hot gas bypass control can be provided on the lead circuit to permit operation of the system down to 80 % of its unloaded
capacity. Under low ambient condition, it controls temperature by eliminating the need to cycle the compressor on and off,
ensuring narrow temperature swing and lengthen the life span of the compressor.

D. ADVANCE MICROPROCESSOR
Advance microprocessor control can be offered to achieve precise control and safety functions of the packaged units.
Microprocessor is simple to use, push button keyboard allows to access the operating conditions, control set points and
alarm history clearly displayed on a multi-line backed illuminated LCD panel.

E. FAN CYCLE SWITCH HEAD PRESSURE CONTROL (FCS)

The capacity of air-cooled condensers varies with the difference between condensing temperature and condenser enter-
ing air temperate (ambient temperature). It increases as this difference increases. For a given capacity, a drop in the
ambient temperature will lower the condensing temperatures and if the ambient temperature drops below a given limit,
head pressure control is required.

Control shall be set for a minimum of 95°F (35°C) saturated refrigerant condensing temperature, or to suit the specified application.

F. ECONOMIZER/CO2 MONITORING
The economizer permits low-cost operation by utilizing cool outdoor air for free cooling. A damper on the economizer
controls the amount of outdoor air and on closed position it provides a leak proof seal. It can easily be adjusted for 100%
outdoor air, 100% return air or any proportions of mixed air.

The Economizer is operative either by a dry bulb Outdoor Air Thermostat (OAT) or a Solid State Enthalpy Controller (EC)
to sense the outdoor air temperature. The unit is equipped with an electronic control board, the economizer controller with
a sensitive feedback system carefully modulating the damper to allow correct percentage of fresh air and return air. The
economizer controller is designed to match with Zamil electronic thermostat.

1. OUTDOOR AIR THERMOSTAT (OAT) ECONOMIZER CONTROL

Economizer operation is governed by outdoor temperature and unit OAT setting, as follows:

a. Outdoor Temperature > Outdoor Air Thermostat (OAT) setting:

If the thermostat calls for cooling, the economizer damper moves to minimum position, simultaneously blower motor,
compressor-1 & fan motors would start.
If further cooling is required, compressor-2 also starts with a time delay. After the thermostat is satisfied the compres-
sors are staged out. The economizer controller moves the damper automatically to closed position simultaneously the
blower is also shutdown.

b. Outdoor Temperature < Outdoor Air Thermostat (OAT) setting:

As the cooling load would be low, the economizer controller will operate as stage-1 of cooling system first switching
ON the blower motor simultaneously modulating the damper in steps to required position, allowing the cool outside air
into indoor side. If further cooling is required compressor-1 & fan motors will switch ON as stage-2 of the system,
whereas compressor-2 is pulled out of service. As the room temperature is attained, economizer controls will cut-off
the compressor, fan motors simultaneously closing damper to fully closed position.

9
2. ENTHALPY SENSOR FOR ECONOMIZER CONTROL
The solid state enthalpy sensor is capable of accurately sensing outdoor air enthalpy content (temperature & humidity)
and controlling the economizer damper for the minimum heat content introduce to the evaporator coil. Thereby, providing
an efficient & economical system operation.

3. CO2 MONITOR
Indoor air quality (IAQ) is becoming more and more important, CO2 monitoring give an indication of the amount of CO2
inside a facility. Once it is exceeding a certain level it sends a signal to the control system demanding for fresh air to
replace the inside poor quality air. The control is responding in opening the damper and at the same time there is input in
the control for an exhaust relief fan externally connected to the unit as it purge the poor quality air.

FIGURE- 5

G. ULTRA VIOLET LIGHT FOR IMPROVED INDOOR AIR QUALITY

Why use "UV FLOWTM" solution for IAQ:
1. Improved Overall Indoor Air Quality
When used for general IAQ control, UV FLOWTM products can successfully:
• Control fungi in HVAC systems to reduce or eliminate mold-related allergies.
• Prevent the development of different types of bacteria.
• Reduce the spread of cold and flu viruses and other airborne-transmitted diseases.
• Eliminate odors and maintain a fresh air smell indoors.
UV FLOWTM Emitters pose no risk to components, equipment or inhabitants. Their non-chemical energy kills organisms
without producing secondary contamination and costs little to operate.

2. Save Energy and Cut Costs

UV FLOWTM can reduce maintenance cost as UVC lights successfully eliminate the bio-film (dirt) that fouls surface of heat
exchangers - completely cleaning and continuously maintaining coils and drain pans to 'as new' conditions. This in turn
improves heat-transfer efficiency, coil pressure drop, and fan performance.

H. PUMP DOWN SOLENOID VALVE (PDS)

A pump down solenoid valve may be installed in the liquid line. When the room thermostat is satisfied, the valve closes
and the compressor continues to run until a substantial portion of the refrigerant has been pumped out from the evapora-
tor. The low-pressure switch will cycle off the compressor at a predetermined evaporator pressure.

SELECTION PROCEDURE
1. Determine cooling and heating capacity requirements at design conditions
Data:
Condenser entering air temperature : 1150F
Evaporator entering air temperature : 800F DB / 670F WB
Evaporator airflow : 14,000 CFM
Required cooling capacity : 420,000 BTUH
Sensible heat capacity : 300,000 BTUH
Required heating capacity : 40 kW
External static pressure : 1.6 INCH WG.
Power supply (V-Ph-Hz) : 460-3-60
Unit type : Front fan supply (front return air)
2. Unit selection based on required cooling capacity
Enter cooling capacity performance data at condenser entering air temp. at 1150F and evaporator entering air temp. 800F
DB, 670F WB, 14000 CFM airflow. The PRX040 unit will give 474,020 BTUH cooling capacity (gross) and 354,270 BTUH
sensible heat capacity (gross).
3. Electric heater selection
Heating capacity required = 40 kW.
Enter electric heating table for PRX040 at 460-3-60 power supply.
40 kW heater at 460 volts satisfies the required heating.
4. Determine fan speed and power requirements at design conditions
Before entering the fan performance tables, calculate the summation of external static pressure for the required compo-
nents as follows.
External static pressure : 1.6 INCH WG.
Additional module : NIL
1.6 INCH WG.
Enter fan performance table for PRX040 model. For 14000 CFM and external static pressure of 1.6 INCH WG, it require
1006 RPM and 12.25 brake horse power (BHP) wherein the standard motor will meet job requirements.
5. Determine input power to motor
Use fan motor efficiency table.
BHP x 746 watts 12.25 x 746
Blower motor watts = = = 10,042 watts.
Motor efficiency 0.91
6. Determine net capacities
Above capacities are gross and do not include blower motor heat gain.
Determine net capacities as follows:
Net cooling capacity = Gross cooling capacity – blower motor heat
= 474,020 – (10,042 WATTS x 3.413 BTUH/WATTS) = 439,747 BTUH
Net sensible capacity = 354,270 – (10,042 WATTS x 3.413 BTUH/WATTS) = 319,997 BTUH
7. To calculate leaving air conditions (see footnote for capacity tables)
DBL = DBE – (Sensible Capacity (Btuh) / 1.08 x CFM)
WBL = DBL – [DR (DBE – WBE)] WBE
WBL WBE
W WBL W
When sensible capacity approaches 1.0, especially at entering
DB higher than 800F, find DBL in the same manner above, but
WBL is to be found from intersection of DBL Line on a psychro- WE

metric chart with the horizontal line of humidity ratio(W) where WE= WL
(at SHR = 1), WL = WE. DBL DBE DBL DBE

SOUND LEVEL DATA
To obtain sound pressure level measured 5 ft. (1.6 m) directly opposite the center of blower inlet:

1. From performance table at operating conditions, find BHP, RPM and static efficiency (SE).

SE = (CFM x TSP)/(6362 x BHP) (See step 4 & table below).

2. Read dBA level from respective graph at operating BHP & SE (%)

3. Knowing RPM, select proper row from sound power factor table and dBA level to each values in row to obtain sound
power level (dB re 10-12).

4. Calculate TSP (Total Static Pressure) as follows:

TSP = ISP + ESP

ESP (External Static Pressure) from Job Specification.

ISP (Internal Static Pressure) Calculate from table below.

FACE VELOCITY INTERNAL STATIC PRESSURE (inch wg.)

500 1.45 1.59 1.71

600 1.83 1.99 2.15

Notes:
1) If you have additional section such as bag filter, drip eliminator, etc., add internal losses as shown in the static pressure
drop table.
2) Pressure drop across filter, coil and blower are included in ISP.

CONTROLS & SEQUENCE OF OPERATION
Scroll compressors are designed to operate in single direction only. Hence, care has to be taken to ensure correct rotation
when the system is operated. Verification of correct rotation is by observing that the suction pressure drops and discharge
pressure rises when compressor run. Reverse rotation results in abnormal sound, as well as, substantially low current
draw and by interchanging power supply wire L1 & L3 will correct this problem.
The operation of the air conditioning unit is controlled by a 24VAC electronic control board.
GENERAL
The thermostat normally displays room temperature and mode of operation. The five buttons on the front of the unit allow
complete control of the thermostat. The thermostat also allows to select continuous fan operation (useful when using an
air cleaner) or have the fan come on with the compressor.
SWITCH FUNCTION
- On/Off Key : Switch the system On or Off.
- Up Key : To increases the set temperature.
- Down Key : To decreases the set temperature.
- Mode Key : Changes the mode to Fan, Cool, Heat or Auto.
- Fan Key : Changes the Fan Operation to Auto or Continuous.
- °C/°F selection : By pressing Mode & UP key together, toggles between °C to °F or vice versa.
USER CONTROLS
Mode:
Select the desired mode of operation by pressing of the mode button:
FAN COOL HEAT AUTO

Fan: In this mode of operation, the compressor will be in inactive state. Display shows room temperature. Fan will be running.

Cool: In this mode of operation, the compressor will be ON after a delay depending on the differential of room
temperature & Set temperature.
Heat: In this mode of operation, Fan is ON.
Auto: In auto mode, thermostat provide automatic changeover from heating to cooling mode & vice versa. Thermo-
stat automatically switches to maintain the desired temperature.
DIP SWITCH OPTIONS AND FUNCTIONS
There are 4 small DIP (Dual in line package) switches on the back of the circuit board which must be configured by the
installer.

RIGGING INSTRUCTIONS
ATTENTION TO RIGGERS
Hook rigging sling thru holes in base rail, as shown below.
Holes in base rail are centered around the unit center of gravity.
Center of gravity is not unit center line.
Ensure center of gravity aligns with the main lifting point before lifting.
Use spreader bar when rigging, to prevent the slings from damaging the unit.
CAUTION
All panels should be in place when rigging.
Care must be taken to avoid damage to the coils during handling.
Insert packing material between coils & slings as necessary.

INSTALLATION
1. Provide a concrete pad or another form of stand. Use 4-10 each rubber/cork pads 4" x 4" x 1" thick each (rubber-in-
shear for example) at each corner and along side rails, or use 4-10 each spring isolators.
2. Service Clearance: To avoid condenser air obstructions/recirculation, and to give adequate service space, indicated
clearances must be observed. See drawing below.
3. All wiring must comply with NEC (National Electrical Code) and local electrical codes. The electric supply must
comply with the unit nameplate. See the typical wiring diagram for guidance.
4. All units are pre-charged with R-22 and oil, sealed and tested for leaks. Therefore do not attempt to open the system.
5. Install a flexible connection for duct work to minimize vibration transmission. Connect drain pipe (copper or PVC) to
the nearest drain pit.
