CLC 12 - Final Capstone Proposal and Reflection

Name: Daniel Kim

Topic: The Psychology Presented in TV Series
Focus Area: Product Strand
Inquiry Question: How is mental illness represented in Media such as TV Shows/Movies?
Presentation Method: PowerPoint
Presentation Time & Date: January 19, 2024. 2:20pm – 2:40pm

1) Capstone Project Summary:

In the box below, please type out a 200 – 300-word summary highlighting the key points and
information that you plan to present during your Capstone Project presentation.

In my presentation, I plan to introduce myself and the artifacts I have created in my project. During this
introduction, I will delve into my capstone area of focus and the inquiry question and why I chose it. I will
expand on the inquiry question and how it relates to the focus area. After the introduction, I plan to talk
about the challenges I faced during all stages of the project. I will explain the unraveling of the psychology
of the characters I had talked about – how it helps create interesting storytelling, this will not only be an
explanation of how it engages viewers but also highlight the significance of mental illness in TV series.
Video evidence will also be presented in the form of videos and pictures to encompass the project’s
evolution. In addition, I will incorporate the 6 core competencies into my presentation and how they apply
to my project. Furthermore, I will talk about my transition plan, and what I intend to do in the future
which is travel and going to university for next year – displaying that I will continue to apply what I learned
from this capstone project. Finally, I will explain what I learned about myself from this project, what my
favorite parts were, and what were not.

2) Core Competencies:
In the boxes below, explain how your project or the work we’ve done in CLC 12 Class demonstrates
your abilities and skills from each section of the Core Competencies. (You must choose at least two
points from each skill area of the core competencies.) *This was also done in your Capstone Draft
Proposal, so if the skills and abilities still apply and have not changed, then you can copy and paste
your answers in the Final Capstone Proposal*

Core Competency: How you demonstrate it in Capstone Project:

Personal Awareness & 1. I can express my needs and seek help when needed.
Responsibility
During my time in CLC, I have been able to express my needs and
seek help when needed. For example, when doing the 16 personalities
test, I had some confusion with using the website; I asked for help to get
guidance and how to properly answer the questions for the assignment.
This guidance aided me in understanding the booklet and myself much
better with this clarification; helping me meet the requirements for the
assignment and try to push myself into getting above proficient.

2. I take personal responsibility for my choices and actions.

I can take personal responsibility for my choices and actions which
was demonstrated during the money management challenge because I
had to be careful when choosing which items to spend on carefully so I
can still have enough for disposable income. I learned how to manage
my income responsibly, to use it efficiently where I can save up for other
needs. I had a net income of around $65k after calculations and having to
think about what I needed to buy carefully helped me with my choices.

Social Responsibility 1. I can Identify and appreciate different perspectives on issues and
use and evaluate strategies to resolve problems.

When there are issues that my friends have with each other, I tend to
hear from a different perspective. I listen to both sides of a situation
before coming up with my own. This example comes from when two
people I knew were having trouble with their relationship and one of
them came to me for advice. The first step I took was to listen to their
side of the story first, and then I would listen to the other person's
perspective without bias. I would evaluate how to resolve the issues by
listening to both sides and coming up with a good solution. This helped
me realize my strength of being able to see different perspectives
instead of jumping to conclusions to settle out complications.

2. I value diversity, defend human rights, advocate for others, and

act ethically in all my interactions, including online.

Respect is one of the most important things to have, not just for
myself but also for others. When it comes to respect, I respect people no
matter what the cause is—religion, race, sexuality, or age—because that
is what I value in others. Online or offline, I make sure to act ethically so
they will not be attacked; instead, they will feel welcomed and admired.
An example of this can be when during the 12 rules of life group
assignment, I had to take in considerations of others and respectfully
listen to their stories as they were sensitive topics, and it is when people
are most vulnerable.

Critical Thinking 1. I can assess my progress.

When creating my capstone project, I was able to assess my progress by
seeing how much I had improved with the editing from the first one. For
example, the editing in the first and second could be compared as the
second one had more motion graphics whilst the first was much more
still. I had decided to make it more motion like as it helps people stay
longer watching the video rather than just watching a bunch of clips
thrown out together.

2. I can analyze and critique my work and my learning.

When it came to making the resumes for CLC, I was able to analyze
my resume and try to fix it as much as possible from feedback of others,
this helped me try the best of my abilities to fix mistakes that were made
in the process. Such as changing the order of the job information by
making it from most recent to least. This helped me gain a proficient on
this assignment and with the feedback given by the teacher, I can also
use it to better improve my learning and formatting.

Creative Thinking 1. I can use the environment around me, including others,
and my unconscious mind to generate new ideas.
For coming up with my own 12 rules of life, I had to come up with 12
rules I live by and come up with a creative title for each one. I was able to
come up with titles that I felt best suit each rule I had thought of by using
children’s books or past experiences from my life to do this. This is an
example of me using my unconscious mind to help me create with
different titles that may be tricky for others to guess what my rule is
about.
2. I can persevere and understand that failure can be productive.
When I had done my tax calculations for the income challenge, I had
made mistakes in my calculations and failed to get the correct answer for
how much disposable income I had got. This helped me understand the
importance of failure, that it is okay to be wrong and it can help me learn
to be more careful when being productive.
Communication 1. I can listen to contribute meaningfully to discussion and debate,
consider different perspectives, and build consensus.
When it comes to listening, I feel I excel in this category during
discussions as I try the best of my abilities to come up with feedback for
the 12 rules of life group assignment. I was able to give what I liked about
the presentations and what I thought could be done to help improve it.
2. I can work with other students to plan, inquire, and solve
problems.
When we were given a group activity during CLC to help defuse a bomb,
we planned who would give instructions on which part of the paper they
would give and who would try to defuse the bomb and give descriptions.
This was an example of working with other students to solve problems.

Personal & Cultural Identity 1. I understand that culture is a broad concept that includes
things like my geographic region, nationality, sex/gender, age,
ethnicity, sexuality, language, and religion.

I see this as a strength for myself because I feel that the things listed
above are genuinely broad topics that take a lot of research to
understand because of how difficult they are to understand sometimes.
Things like these are a broad concept for culture to be a thing, but they
nonetheless create culture in our community.

2. I understand how what I value had and will shape my choices.

I value many things in my life, but my main values are family, faith,
and respect. These values help me shape my choices, such as how I treat
people. My respect for people is equal to everyone, as I believe everyone
deserves the same amount of equal respect. My family and faith are
interconnected, as they make me who I am, whether it be my extended
family, being faithful to my religion, or people.

3) Presentation preparation:
In the boxes below, answer the following questions: What will you require from your teacher, what will
you need to bring and what still needs to be completed between now and your Capstone presentation
day?
a) What will you require from your teacher in order to do your Capstone presentation? (Ex: Laptop,
table, poster paper, projector, etc…)

What I will require from the teacher is just a laptop and tv to connect to.

b) What will you need to bring in order to do your Capstone presentation?

What I will need to bring in order to do my capstone presentation is my laptop.

c) What still needs to be completed between now and your Capstone presentation day?

What needs to be finished between now and the capstone presentation day is my final video for this project
which hopefully will be done by the 14th.

4) References and explanation of sources:

Please paste all your current list of sources along with a brief explanation of what you used them for in
your research. All these sources should also be listed on your website on your References page.

Final Capstone Project Reflection Questions

(Please give specific detailed answers.)

1. In the process of completing your Capstone Project, what did you learn about your subject? What did
you learn about your skill set? What did you learn about yourself?
In the process of completing my capstone project, I learned more about mental illness, how a person behaves,
and how small details in TV series can be accurately portrayed in real life. From researching the videos, I
learned more about how depression is shown in people, and how it can go unnoticeable with people who are
close to others. I also learned about how to upload YouTube videos, create thumbnails, and the best time to
upload a video; the best time would be 2 PM – 6 PM on weekdays which I saw performed better compared to
when videos were uploaded at different times as the view count was much lower. I learned from the skill set
of communication; that being able to communicate my feelings with other people is an important skill set that
I am glad I was able to refine over time where I can tell others how I feel. What I learned from myself from this
Capstone is that I can apply my research to things I am passionate about, such as videos I am intrigued by how
a person can behave based on their emotions.
2. How is your project relevant to you? How is it relevant to the school? How is it relevant to the
community?
This project is relevant to me because after high school, I plan to take psychology for university which I feel
being able to study and research more about mental illness’ which can potentially help me. This project is
relevant to the school as it can provide entertainment to people who watch this video and if they are viewers
of the TV show I had talked about: Neon Genesis Evangelion or Jujutsu Kaisen, it may bring them more insight
into that series and why their personality was designed in such way. This reason can also be the same for the
community.

3. What impact did your Capstone have on you?

The impact this Capstone had on me was that it helped me realize that it takes patience and time to complete
a task. I had to use my time efficiently and not rush things as it would leave a less completed video which I
know that I would be unhappy with an unfinished product. I was impacted by the amount of preparation
needed as I had to make a script beforehand, record, and then before editing find all clips, music, and images
to reduce any wasted time.
4. What aspects of your project are you most proud of?
The aspect which I am most proud of is my editing. In the first video there was not as much video editing that
was put into it as I had started lacking in that field, but my second video I was able to improve my editing,
adding blurs, motion, and shadows to help with engagement.
5. What was a difficulty you encountered while researching your Capstone project? How were you able to
overcome those obstacles?
I challenge I had encountered were time constraints. Time constraints posed a significant challenge in video
production. Juggling other classes and life's demands made editing a formidable task. I was able to overcome
this obstacle as I was able to dedicate weekends to editing, ensuring each stage of video creation was
completed. Through this strategic time investment, I successfully navigated the challenge, culminating in the
timely upload of the final video for the project.
6. What is the one thing you would have changed about your project if you could?
One thing I would have changed in my project is the time duration for each project as I feel making each video
5 minutes instead of 8 minutes would save on editing time, which would have resulted in more videos that
could have been uploaded. In which I had originally planned to upload 6, but unfortunately was only able to
upload 3 videos by the deadline.
7. What advice would you offer to future Capstone students to help them with their Capstone journey?
The advice I would give future students doing their Capstone project would be to be careful of the deadline. As
it feels like having until near the end of the semester feels like a lot it is actually very short because during the
making of my project, 3 weeks went by, and I was still in the process of creating my second video.
