DesigN
Competition Gifted jewellery designers and up-and-coming creators of eyewear from around the
world merged their talents to add a glimmer of glamour to everyday occasions and to
infuse luxury with a fresh new elegance in the ENLIGHTENED™ – Swarovski Elements
PASSION Topaz DESIGN COMPETITION. Participants were asked to submit designs
using the ENLIGHTENED™ – Swarovski Elements Passion Topaz genuine gemstone
collection as a key element.
The competition was split into two distinctive categories: Basic Passion, fine jewellery
designed with enduring style that would be as suitable for wearing in the office as
for a night out on the town, and Passion DeLuxe, encompassing more experimental
designs suitable for those occasions of extravagance when luxury is an imperative.
The response was overwhelming!
Enthusiastic members of the online community submitted some 25,000 responses to
the more than 3,000 designs we received. Winners were announced at BASELWORLD
2009, the world’s leading jewellery and watch fair, in Basel, Switzerland.

When ENLIGHTENED™ – Swarovski Elements decided
to launch a design competition based on our Passion
Topaz genuine gemstone collection, we hardly foresaw
what an amazing catalyst for creativity we were intro-
ducing in the Web 2.0 technology.
We caught our first glimpse of the vast possibilities the
Internet holds when we launched our Watch Design com-
petition in early 2008. Now we took it a step further, in-
viting prospective designers of jewellery and bejewelled
eyewear to join the online platform www.enlightened-
jewellery-design-competition.com. The results were un-
believable: the broad range and incredible beauty of our
genuine Passion Topaz stone colour assortment proved
truly inspiring for designers.
The vast number and fascinating diversity of the designs
submitted to the contest made the evaluation process a
real challenge. To get things started, our creative and mar-
keting teams narrowed the initial 966 freely created design
submissions down to the 250 best jewellery ideas for EN-
LIGHTENED™ – Swarovski Elements Passion Topaz.
On a beautiful Thursday in late January, the jurors – lead-
ing jewellery figure Patrick Mauboussin, London-based
jewellery designer Lesley Vik Waddell, Nathalie Colin,
Creative Director for Swarovski, luxury media special-
ist Yaffa Assouline, Russian-born design student Eugen
Dirksen, winner of the ENLIGHTENED™ – Swarovski
Elements Watch Design Contest and I – met in Paris to
evaluate the designs submitted for the two categories “Ba-
sic Passion” and “Passion DeLuxe” on the basis of their
creativity and innovative use of the ENLIGHTENED™ –
Swarovski Elements genuine Passion Topaz assortment.
Diary Entry 27.1.2009:
10:00 a.m. We arrange the 250 pre-selected designs in such a way
that the jury members have an immediate overview. The entire
conference room of the beautiful Swarovski office, located on
Rue St. Honoré, resembles a huge collage of inspirations taken
from a page of a jewellery designers sketch book. Wow!
The first jury members arrive to find us still in the process of
hanging some of the designs on the walls and pinning the others
to bulletin boards.

11:00 a.m. All have arrived, and we can start! This is fabulous,
the wealth of top-notch designs have me a little worried about
whether we will be able to stay on schedule. At first it takes us a
while to settle on the designs, but the more we look at the vari-
ous creative ideas, the more routine the process becomes and
the faster we are able to judge the designs. Some are absolutely
remarkable in terms of both the thought behind them and their
quality, while others are lacking in both areas (which in the
end makes judging them a lot easier).
1:00 p.m. Lunchtime has arrived! Having made it through
half of the designs, we head out for a well-deserved bite to
eat. We have been wonderfully provided for by our hosts, our
colleagues from the Daniel Swarovski Paris office, who have
coordinated everything, from the room itself to the bulletin
boards, post-it notes, drinks, tasty (brain!) food and absolutely
delicious chocolates!
3:00 p.m. We reach a major milestone, chosing the best 25 to
30 sketches from the categories of Basic Passion and Passion
DeLuxe. Having Patrick and Lesley with us is a huge help – as
jewellery designers, they are great at identifying any produc-
tion difficulties the jewellery design might entail. This kind of
information is so useful when judging designs! The selected
sketches are now arranged on one huge bulletin board. In the
meantime, we are equipped with post-its in different colours,
and now set out to pick the three most favourable designs in
each category.
4:30 p.m. And the winners are… It is astounding how unani-
mously we agree on the winners and runners-up! The only
thing we fail to immediately agree upon is the order of the sec-
ond and third runners-up in the Passion DeLuxe category, but
when we re-vote on these two designs alone, we agree immedi-
ately. We are all so pleased that enough time still remains for
us to pose for some additional group photos in the dazzlingly
white conference room, which really makes for a fun setting
when the mood is relaxed.
We all are thrilled about the results and look forward to
the next ENLIGHTENED™ – Swarovski Elements design
competition!

idea to create an attractive pattern out of messy wires. My design suggests that even messy
things can be portrayed beautifully. There is beauty in everything and everywhere.”

“Forty elements (twenty at the top and twenty at the bottom) are each assembled and
articulated in three points to create a round shape which can expand or shrink from a
“metal flower” to a wide, open necklace. I hoped to achieve a transformable necklace as
a challenge to myself. Younger I have always been fascinated by my grandmothers’s
tablemat which used a similar expanding system wiwth articulated pieces.
After the mechanism was thought through I wanted the parts to look “technical” like the
elements of a watch’s movement or any precise mechanism but also “joyful” by using
bright colour topaz shades.”

“A pavé ring holds cables together, by moving it up and down it frees the cables to spread
and creates uniques shapes. My inspiration? I would say the way a Tie can be adjusted
and also the elasticity of metal cables which creates great curves in any position.
Actually, I thought of a“Tie” when I was trying to make pieces from the ENLIGHTENEDTM –
Swarovski Elements Passion Topaz beads, which for me are a great ending
