CHAPTER TWO
2 HISTORY OF KANO ELECTRICITY DISTRIBUTION COMPANY PLC
(KEDCO)
In May 2012, a consortium of five companies came together for the purpose of
bidding for Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) and offering efficient
and sustainable energy to the people within the business territory of the company
made up of Kano, Jigawa and Katsina states. The companies are: the Sahelian Energy
and Integrated Services Ltd (SEIS); the Kayseri ve Civari Electric T.A (KCETAS)
Turkey, and the Dantata Investment and Securities Company Ltd. Others are, INCAR
Power Ltd and the Highland Electricity Ltd. All together they formed the Sahelian
Power SPV Ltd; the company emerged as the core investor in the Kano Electricity
Distribution Company Plc, after a very rigorous and transparent process which
gained world acclamation. KEDCO is one of the eleven Distribution Companies
privatized by the Federal Government of Nigeria as part of the electricity power
sector reform program implementation. Located in the north western geopolitical
zone of Nigeria, the Company has license to generate, distribute and market
electricity in the three states of Kano, Jigawa and Katsina. Geographical coverage
of the company is 67,128 Km2. The company has the largest potential in terms of
customer population with the combined population of the three states at 19,564,000
(2006 national census).

KEDCO Plc became a Public Liability company on November 7th 2005, after the
implementation of the Electricity Sector Reform Act of 2005 had started in earnest.

Here is the example of generation power plant for hydroelectric

FIG. 1 Hydroelectric power generation

2.2 THE TRANSMISSION SYSTEM

The electric power transmission is bulk movement of electrical energy from

generating sites, such as power plant, to an electrical substation. The
interconnected lines which facilitate this movement are known as transmission
network.

FIG. 2 Electric tower

2.2 THE DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM

 The stage of power system which conveys power to consumers is called the
distribution system. From the distribution station, the electricity be can
distributed in three ways these are;

 PRIMARY DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM:

 this part of the distribution system operates at voltage level of 33KV. Due to
economic reasons, primary distribution is carried out using a three phases, three
wire system.  SECONDARY DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM

this level is operated at 11KV it conveys power to transformers at distribution

substation or

to some places where high amount of power is required such as industry. It is also
a three

phases, three wire system.

TERTIARY DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM: - this is the level which conveys power to

consumers through distribution cables connected throughout the town. It operates at
voltage of level of 0, and it is a four phases, four wire system.

The electric power distribution is the final stage in the delivery of electric
power. It`s carries electricity from the transmission system to individual
consumers. Distribution substations connect to the transmission system and lower
the transmission voltage to medium voltage ranging between 2KV and 35KV with the
use of transformers. Primary distribution lines carry this medium voltage power to
distribution transformers located near the customers premises.

FIG. 3 The Distribution system

Inter-connected system The radial system is the simplest distribution circuit and
it has the lowest initial cost. The system is employed only when is generated at
low voltage and the substation is located at the centre of the load.
FIG. 4 Interconnection system While; The ring main system the primaries of
distribution transformers form a loop. The loop circuit starts from the substation
bus-bars and makes a loop through the area to be served, and returns to the
substation.

2 AIMS AND OBJECTIVES OF KANO ELECTRICITY DISTRIBUTION

COMPANY KEDCO

The main purpose of Kano Electricity Distribution Company KEDCO is to deliver

efficient service to the consumers by providing an avenue for division of labor and

specialization under the Business Unit. It also provides an avenue for check and

balancing by controlling power supply and outage at any time.

3.2 ADDITIONAL THINS I LEARNT

3.2 ELECTRICAL MATERIALS

Conductor
Insulator
FIG. 6 A Cable

3.2 CONDUCTOR
An electrical conductor is any materials that do allow the free flow of an electric
energy to pass through them. While the insulator are the materials that do not
allows the free flow of ban electric current to pass through them.

3.2 TYPES OF ELECTRICAL CONDUCTOR

Copper

Aluminium

The aluminium conductor is cheaper, lighter, but less conductive and less tensile
strength than copper.

And the aluminium conductor are of different types those are;

Aluminium Conductor Reinforced (ACR)

All Aluminium Conductors (AAC)

All Aluminium Alloy Conductors (AAAC)

Aluminium Conductor Alloy Reinforced (ACAR)

Expanded ACSR

3.2 INSULATOR

The overhead line insulators provide insulation between the overhead line
conductors and the earthed cross-arm to which they are connected and also provide
support to the conductors.

3.2 TYPES OF INSULATORS IN OVERHEAD LINES

Depending on the applications and the operating voltage levels, the overhead line
insulators are divided in three types
Pin Type Insulators
Suspension Type Insulators and
Strain Type Insulators The pin type insulators are used for supporting line
conductors for low voltages up to and including 11KV one piece insulator can be
used, two pieces insulators are commonly used for 33KV and 66KV, three and four
pieces insulators can be employed. And this types, is simple in construction and
cheap in cost, but if any failure occurs all the insulators will be replaced.
FIG. 7 Suspension type Insulator

3 LINE SUPPORTS OR ELECTRICAL POLES

Different types of poles or towers are used to support overhead lines structures
which are known as line supports. A line supports should possess the following
requirements.

It should have a high mechanical strength to bear the conductor weight, wind load
etc.
Maintenance should be easy and cost should be very low.
It should be very light in weight and extremely durable.
Proper spacing between the conductors and the ground clearance must be maintained.
3.3 TYPES OF LINE SUPPORTS OR ELECTRICAL POLES

The different line supports used by transmission lines include;

Wooden poles
Reinforced concrete poles
Steel poles
Latticed steel towers. The choice of support depends upon the cost, span of lines,
atmospheric conditions and line voltage.
3 ELECTRICAL SUBSTATION
Electrical substations are part of an electrical generation, transmission and
distribution system.

3.4 TYPES OF ELECTRICAL SUBSTATION

Substations may be described by their voltage class, their applications within the
power system, the method used to insulate most connections, and by the style and
materials of the structures used.

The types may include the following;

3.4.1 TRANSMISSION SUBSTATION

A transmission substation connects two or more transmission lines.

3.4.1 DISTRIBUTION SUBSTATION

A distribution substation transfers power from the transmission system to the

distribution system of an area.

3.4 ELEMENTS OF SUBSTATION

Primary power lines

Ground wire
Overhead lines
Transformer for measurement of electric voltage
Disconnection switch
Circuit breaker
Current transformer
Lightning arrester
Main transformer
Control building
Security fence
Secondary power lines
3.4 DEFINITIONS OF SOME ELEMENTS

Power Transformer; This is a static device for stepping up or down electric voltage
by inductive coupling between its windings.
FIG. 12 A circuit breaker

Lightning Arrester; This is a device used on electrical power systems and

telecommunications systems to protect the insulation and conductors of the system
from the damaging effects of lightning.
FIG. 13 Lightening Arrester

Disconnection Switch: This is used to ensure that the an electrical circuit is

completely de-energized for service or maintenance.
FIG. 14 Ground wires

Ground Wire: This is the reference point in an electrical circuit from which
voltages are measured, a common return path for electric current, or a direct
physical connection to the earth.
FIG. 15 Earth wire

Overhead Lines: This is a structure used in electric power transmission and

distribution to transmit electrical energy along large distances.
