THE ROLE OF STUDENTS' LEARNING STYLE IN DEVELOPING CIVIC
COMPETENCE: CASE STUDY IN LEARNING CIVILIZATION EDUCATION AT
MTs. AL-ROHMAH KARANGPAWITAN GARUT

Sri Rahma Nuraini¹ Kokom Komalasari²

Master of Civic Education Program, Faculty of Social Science Education, Universitas Pendidikan

Abstract.

Civic education is an integral part in the formation of active, conscious, and responsible citizens. As a
subject that aims to shape citizenship competence, civic education is responsible for developing students'
understanding of rights, obligations, democratic values, political participation, and tolerance in society. In

1. INTRODUCTION
Civic education is an integral part in the formation of active, conscious, and responsible
citizens. As a subject that aims to form civic competence, civic education is responsible for
developing students' understanding of rights, obligations, democratic values, political
participation, and tolerance in society. In the context of learning civic education at MTs. Al-
Rohmah Karangpawitan Garut, the role of students' learning styles is an important factor that
must be considered. Learning style refers to an individual's preference in receiving,
processing, and processing new information. Each individual has a unique learning style,
which includes preferences for how they acquire knowledge and interact with the learning
environment.
In the learning process of civic education at MTs. Al-Rohmah Karangpawitan Garut, it is
important to pay attention to the role of learning style or learning style of students. Each
individual has different learning preferences and characteristics. They have a tendency to
learn through the most effective way and according to their own needs.
Accommodating learners' learning styles in civic education learning can have a positive
impact on their civic competence development. When learners are encouraged to learn
through learning styles that suit their preferences, they will be more motivated, more focused,
and more easily understand the material being taught. The application of learning styles can
also help increase learners' active participation in learning activities. For example, if a learner
has a visual learning preference, the teacher can use visual media such as pictures, diagrams,
or interesting videos to explain civic concepts. Meanwhile, learners with kinesthetic learning
preferences will respond better to learning that involves physical movements or real actions,
such as role plays or simulations.
By considering learners' learning styles, civic education learning at MTs. Al-Rohmah
Karangpawitan Garut can be more effective and efficient. Learners will feel more involved in
the learning process, gain a deeper understanding, and be able to apply civic concepts in their
daily lives. Through this case study, it is expected to find learning methods that are in
accordance with the learning style of students at MTs. Al-Rohmah Karangpawitan Garut, so
that civic education learning can be more effective in developing their civic competence.
Thus, students will become more active, responsible, and contributing citizens in building a
democratic, inclusive, and equitable society. Based on the introduction stated above, in
general, the main problems that will be researched are as follows:
1) What is the learning style profile of students at MTs. Al-Rohmah Karangpawitan
Garut in the context of learning Citizenship Education?
2) How is the role of students' learning style in developing their civic competence in
learning Citizenship Education?
3) How is the use of learning methods and models that are in accordance with the
learning style of students towards the development of civic competence in
learning Civic Education at MTs. Al-Rohmah Karangpawitan Garut?
2. THEORETICAL STUDIES
2.1 Learning Style

Learning will be more meaningful and useful if students use all their senses, from
ears, eyes and thinking, processing information and doing something. When we listen alone,
we don't remember much and forget easily. James and Gamer (Gunawan, 2014) state that
learning style is a complex way in which students perceive and feel that they are most
effective and efficient in processing, storing and remembering what they have learned.
Learning style is the way to do it when receiving lessons and information about the
environment (Subini, 2011; Yani, 2017). Learning style is an interesting activity for students
when doing learning activities with schoolmates (Sopiatin and Sahrani, 2011). Learning
styles refer to a person's unique preferences and ways of acquiring, processing and
assimilating new information. Each individual has a different learning style, which reflects
their preference for the learning method that is most effective for them. Learning style is an
approach that describes as an individual learns or the way each person focuses on the
process, and to acquire difficult and new information through different understanding
(Ghufron et Risnawita, 2014).

In the Big Indonesian Dictionary (Depdiknas, 2005), visual means something that can
be seen with the sense of sight. In this learning style, students receive information visually or
through the sense of sight, which can be in the form of text, writing, letters, images, videos
and colors. This visual learning style emphasizes visual acuity, meaning that students must
first see concrete evidence to believe it. Rozo and Nicholl in the book (Mulyati, 2015) state
that the characteristics of visual learning styles such as reading (like/have fun reading),
watching TV, watching movies, guessing puzzles or solving crossword puzzles, prefer
reading, because one must read it directly to understand the information.

According to the Big Indonesian Dictionary (Depdiknas, 2005), sound means to be

heard. In auditory learning styles, students acquire information through the sense of hearing
in the form of speech, language, musical tones, voices, rhythms, internal dialog and sounds.
The characteristics of students' information acquisition place hearing as the main means of
information acquisition, followed by the ability to remember and understand information. It
is difficult for students to receive lessons directly in written form. Students have difficulty in
writing and reading. (Sriyono, 1992) states that "Students with the listening type acquire all
information well by listening". soft music without words, engage in conversation to
understand lessons.
Kinesthetic is taken from the word kinetic. The Big Indonesian Dictionary
(Depdiknas, 2005) has kinetic resources related to motion. In this kinesthetic learning style,
students learn or acquire knowledge through their own movements or actions, either
intentionally or unintentionally. (Sriyono, 1992) states that "Students with the motor type get
information well if they do it themselves directly".

2.2 Civic Competence

Civic Competence is the knowledge, values and attitudes and skills that support
inclusive and responsible citizenship in the life of society and the state. (Margaret S Branson,
1999) states that the three most important civic competencies in civic education are civic
knowledge (civic skills), civic skills (civic skills), and civic attitudes (civic disorder).
Civic competence is the ability of individuals to participate actively in community life
and contribute to efforts to build a better society. The concept involves the skills, attitudes
and knowledge needed to interact effectively with others, understand social issues and take
responsible action in society.
Civic competence is important in building an inclusive, democratic and sustainable
society. By having civic competence, individuals can contribute to solving social problems,
influencing public policy, and building a more just and equitable society.

2.3 Citizenship Education

Citizenship Education has experienced a very long historical development, namely

Citizenship Education, Pancasila Moral Education, Pancasila Citizenship Education and
Citizenship Education. Winataputra (Winarno, 2014) means: "Citizenship Education as a
field of education whose purpose is to study the politics and culture of citizenship, using the
departments of education and political science as the main scientific framework, as well as
other relevant departments, which are organized on a permanent basis in the form of a civic
education curriculum, socio-cultural activities, citizenship and scientific civic studies". In
other words, civic education is essentially political education. So it can be concluded that
civic education has an important role because it can lead students and focus on the formation
of citizens who have the knowledge to become smart and skilled citizens.

from data analysis and literature review.

4. RESEARCH RESULTS

Learning style refers to an individual's preference in processing, understanding and

remembering information. There are several commonly recognized types of learning styles, such
as visual, auditory, kinesthetic, and based on preference in working alone or collaborating with
others. Civic competence, on the other hand, includes the knowledge, skills and attitudes that
enable individuals to be active and responsible members of society. Learning Effectiveness
Learners tend to learn better when they are introduced to learning methods that suit their learning
styles. If learners' learning styles are considered in developing curriculum and teaching
strategies, they are likely to be more engaged and more effective in understanding civic issues.

By understanding learners' learning styles, learners' participation in the classroom

increases, and educators can develop more diverse activities and projects that suit individual
learning preferences. This can increase learners' participation in civic learning and help them feel
more engaged in social and political issues.

CONCLUSION

In order to create MTs learners who have strong civic competence, a learning approach
that considers each individual's learning style is an important factor. With the right approach,
learners can become active citizens, play a role in community development, and have a high
commitment to the values of Pancasila and diversity in unity.

Diversifying learning approaches by using various learning approaches that suit various
learning styles can enrich the process of developing civic competence. Through the use of
various methods, media and learning activities, learners can gain a more thorough understanding
of civic values and active roles in society.
