SERVICE BULLETIN NO. 1161 PAGE 2 OF 4
COMPLIANCE TIME: Inspection Requirement - to coincide with the next regularly scheduled maintenance
event, but not to exceed the next fifty (50) hours time in service. Subsequent to
initial inspection, recurring inspections shall be performed at 100 hour intervals
thereafter.
Performing the structural modifications described in the repair kit instructions will
eliminate the above repetitive inspection requirements of this Service Bulletin. At
the operator's discretion, the modification instructions in the kit may be
accomplished prior to the discovery of a crack, in order to eliminate the recurring
inspection requirements of this Service Bulletin.
APPROVAL: The technical content of this Service Bulletin has been shown to comply with the
applicable Federal Aviation Regulations and is FAA approved.
PURPOSE: It has been determined that, under certain conditions, the Rib Assembly on the aft
side of the Main Wing Spar at Wing Station 49.25 may develop a crack, located
vertically along the bend radius of the flange common to the Main Wing Spar and
the Side Brace Attach Fitting.
A crack in the Wing Rib Assembly as described, if left un-repaired, reduces the
capability of the attachment structure.
This Service Bulletin provides a schedule for inspection to detect the presence of
cracks, and announces the availability of a Service Kit, which includes components
and instructions to repair the Wing Rib Assembly, if a crack is discovered.
INSTRUCTIONS:
NOTE: Perform the following instructions per the appropriate Service/Maintenance Manual, when required:
1. Place aircraft on jacks, and perform the following disassembly and inspection on the LH and RH wings.
2. Two separate inspection intervals are to be accomplished as described below. If no cracks are found,
proceed to step 4
a. For the initial inspection, and at each 500 hour interval thereafter:
Remove the Main Landing Gear Side Brace, by removing the five bolts that fasten it to the wing structure.
Retain hardware for reassembly. Inspect the Rib Assembly (LH wing & RH wing) for evidence of cracks in
the bend radius of the flange common to the Main Spar Web (as shown in Figure 1), using dye penetrant
inspection techniques.
b. At each 100 hour interval:
Inspect the Rib Assembly (LH & RH) for evidence of cracks at the location described above, except the
inspection shall be limited to a visual examination of the exposed (upper half) portion of the flange bend
radius. Removal of the Main Landing Gear Side Brace is not required at the 100 hour inspection interval.
Dye penetrant inspection techniques are not required at the 100 hour inspection interval, unless a crack
is discovered.
3. If a crack is detected, identify the path of propagation, and determine if trimming, as illustrated in
Figure 1, will remove all the material affected by the crack. If affirmative, install appropriate kit. If
this cannot be accomplished, replacement of the Rib Assembly is mandated.
Note: The recurring inspection requirements mandated by this service bulletin can be eliminated in
one of two ways (these instructions apply independently to the left and right hand sides), as
described in options a) and b) below. At the owners/operators discretion, option a) or b) can
be accomplished pr ior to the discover y of a crack, in order to eliminate the recurr ing
inspection requirement.

INSTRUCTIONS: (Continued)
a) Modification of the existing rib assemblies through compliance with Rib Repair Kit instructions
as specified by this service bulletin.
b) If the date code on the rib assembly is numbered 8313 or higher, the recurring inspection
requirement is eliminated. See Figure 2 to locate and identify the date code. For example a
date code of 8021 will require a recurring inspection, while a date code of 8587 will not
require a recurring inspection. Replacement of the existing rib assembly with a newer rib

requirement.
4. Reassemble the Main Landing Gear Side Brace, using existing hardware after initial inspection
and after 500 hour inspections or when disassembly was required.
5. Verify proper functioning of Landing Gear.
6. Remove airplane from jacks, and return to service.
7. Make a logbook entry indicating compliance with this Service Letter, noting the accomplishment
of the recurring inspection, or the structural modification of the LH and/or RH wing per kit
instructions, as applicable.
