Worksheet in GEC 103: SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY AND SOCIETY

Week No. 14

NAME: MAY JUDE M. DELA CRUZ. COURSE AND YEAR: BSA-1A

A.

1. How nanotechnology can change every aspect of your life? Give more examples on how
nanotechnology works for the improvement and sustainability of our environment. 10 points

-Nanotechnology can change every aspect of our lives for the better. People start using cheap,
lightweight solar plastics, which makes solar energy widely available. Nanoparticles can clean up toxic
chemical spills, as well as air-borne pollutants. In medicine, nano sensors help to identify particular
cells/substances in the body. Also ,nanotechnology helps to improve vehicle fuel efficiency. The vehicle
parts which are made from nanocomposite materials are lighter, stronger, and more chemically
resistant comparing to metal. Examples on how technology works for the improvement and
sustainability of our environment are the following such as ultra high-yield agriculture, zero-pollution
manufacturing, cheap power, environmental remediation, and personal spacecraft.

2. What is Graphene? As One of the most promising technology in the market, give the potential uses of
Graphene. 10 points

- Graphene, an extraordinary material composed of a single layer of carbon atoms arranged in a

hexagonal lattice, stands as one of the most promising technologies in various industries. Its
unparalleled electrical conductivity makes it a frontrunner in electronics, potentially leading to the
creation of faster and more efficient electronic components. Beyond electronics, graphene's exceptional
properties extend to energy storage, with the potential to revolutionize batteries and supercapacitors by
offering higher energy densities and quicker charging capabilities. In the realm of materials science,
graphene's incorporation into composites enhances structural strength without compromising weight,
opening avenues for advanced and lightweight materials. Additionally, its biocompatibility renders it
valuable in medical applications, where it could contribute to the development of innovative medical
devices such as biosensors and drug delivery systems. Graphene's unique structure also holds promise in
water filtration, enabling selective permeability for improved desalination processes. Furthermore, its
flexibility and transparency position graphene as a game-changer in display technologies, paving the way
for the development of flexible and transparent electronic screens. Lastly, graphene's excellent thermal
conductivity makes it an asset in thermal management applications, particularly in dissipating heat
efficiently in electronic devices.

1. What is Nano technology? Give the benefits of using nanotechnology? 10 points

- Nano technology is an advanced interdisciplinary field than encompasses science and technology that
manufactures materials of great help to the environment of various areas of society especially health
care, environment, energy, food, water, and agriculture. The benefits of using nanotechnology is not a
single technology it may become pervasive. It seeks to develop new materials with specific properties.
Also, nanotechnology may introduce new efficiencies and paradigms which may make practices
uncompetitive or obsolete. As well as it may be complicated to detect its presence unless one has the
specialist tools of nanotechnology.

2. What are the potential impacts of nanotechnology in health, environment and in economy? 10 points

-The potential impacts of nanotechnology in different areas are vital. In health it improves by medicine.
Nanoparticles in pharmaceutical products improve their absorption within the body and make them
easier to deliver, often through combination medical devices. Nanoparticles can also be used to deliver
chemotherapy drugs to specific cells, such as cancer cells. It reduces damage to healthy cells in the body
& allows for earlier detection of disease. In environment the cleaner energy, better energy, storage and
treatment of water. Improve detection and removal of contaminants and development of benign
industrial processes and materials. Nanotechnology is being used in several applications to improve the
environment. This includes cleaning up existing pollution, improving manufacturing methods to reduce
the generation of new pollution and making alternative energy sources cost effective. Last in economy it
has better products and new jobs. In the clothing sector special functional textiles are under
development, For example self - cleaning textile surfaces or protective insulating clothing. They include
silver nanoparticles in fabric that kill bacteria making clothing odor-resistant.

3. How can nanotechnology be used in the prevention and treatment of illness? 10

-Through the use of nanotechnology, scientists hope to prevent illness, more quickly diagnose, control
disease and treat disease with fewer side effects, and create better medical aids such as more
compatible prosthetics. Nanoparticles and surfaces made of nanostructures are used in many areas of
healthcare research. Specific applications for nanotechnology in medicine include these developments.
Better tools for prevention v Nanoscopes and nanotweezers v Novel membranes for cleaning blood v
Miniaturized probes for recognizing disease. Nano-dots that trace disease. Improved detection through
medical imaging v MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) with better contrast agents v CAT (Computerized
Axial Tomography) scans. Innovative medicines and drug delivery for detection and treatment v Cancer
medicines that only target cancer cells v Antimicrobials (germs). Also, Implants and orthopedics having
to do with your bones that are more compatible and that last longer
