Introduction
This non-controlled document is designed to showcase our implementation/practical
application of the Normal checklist.
To align with current Airbus SOPs, we were required to also implement the Airbus checklist
concept.

Before getting into each of the 9 normal checklists, let’s recall and agree on the following:
• All checklists, except SECURING THE AIRCRAFT, are "challenge/response".
• The PF "responds" to the "challenge" only after checking the current status of the
aircraft. When both pilots have to respond, "BOTH" is indicated.
• If the configuration does not correspond to the checklist response, the PF must take
corrective action before "responding" to the "challenge"
• The BEFORE START, AFTER START, BEFORE TAKEOFF, and AFTER TAKEOFF checklists
are divided in two sections: The "Down to the Line" section, and the "Below the
Line" section. This format is designed to help flight crews to manage the workload.
• A checklist is a vital safety net and often the last line of defense for the pilots - never
rush or skip a checklist!

On the following pages, we will go through each step in the normal checklist, explain what
has to be checked, and what response we expect.

BEFORE START
Above the line
• COCKPIT PREP COMPLETED (BOTH)
Both pilots will have completed their tasks up to and including the takeoff performance.
• GEAR PINS and COVERS REMOVED
The PF confirms that the gear pins and covers were checked removed (e.g. during the walkaround). The PF
announces “REMOVED”.
• SIGNS ON / AUTO
The PF visually checks that the SEAT BELTS sw is in ON and the NO SMOKING or NO PORTABLE/ELEC DEVICE
sw (as installed) on the SIGNS overhead panel is in AUTO. The PF announces “ON / AUTO”.
Note: This item is called SIGNS as the actual switch label differs between aircrafts.
• ADIRS NAV
The PF checks on the MCDU (DATA->IRS MONITOR) that the ADIRS are in NAV and announces “NAV”.
• FUEL _____ / BALANCED
The PF checks the fuel required from the Fuel/FMC page (in the EFL app) against the FOB on the E/WD. PF
checks fuel distribution on the FUEL SD page.
The PF announces e.g. “Fifteen thousand two hundred ninety required, Fifteen thousand three hundred forty
on board, balanced”.
• T.O DATA SET
The PF shall check that the takeoff speeds and the flexible temperature, if applicable, are set in PERF
TAKEOFF page and announce “SET”.
• ALTIMETERS QNH___/___FT (BOTH)
We changed the Airbus item “BARO REF” to “ALTIMETERS” since this is the only check where the pilots not
only check the barometric reference (QNH), but also the readout. Both pilots will read aloud their baro
reference, the altitude readout and the aerodrome elevation.
The PF announces e.g. “QNH One Zero One Three, Five Niner Eight feet, aerodrome elevation Six Zero Zero
feet.”
The PM announces e.g. “QNH One Zero One Three, Five Niner Eight feet, aerodrome elevation Six Zero Zero
feet.”

Below the line

• WINDOWS / DOORS CLOSED (BOTH)
Both pilots will check that
• their sliding windows are closed (check red collar on unlocking button),
• on the DOORS SD page that all doors are closed, and slides are armed, and
• that the cockpit door is closed (no cockpit door open/fault indication).
Both pilots will announce “CLOSED”.
• BEACON ON
The PF checks the BEACON sw on the overhead panel. The PF announces “ON”.
• THR LEVERS IDLE
The PF confirms that the thrust levers are in fwd IDLE position and announces “IDLE”.
• PARKING BRAKE ____
The PF checks the PARK BRK memo displayed on the E/WD and announces either “ON” or „OFF“.

AFTER START
Above the line
• ANTI ICE ____
The PF checks the WING ANTI ICE pb and ENG 1(2) ANTI ICE pb on the ANTI ICE overhead panel. The PF
announces e.g. “Engines OFF, Wings OFF”.
• ECAM STATUS CHECKED
The PF will check the E/WD whether the STATUS REMINDER (STS) is displayed and announces e.g.
“CHECKED”.
• PITCH TRIM ____
The PF checks the THS value on the PERF TAKEOFF page against the PITCH TRIM indication on the F/CTL SD
page and announces e.g. “Zero Point Two UP”
• RUDDER TRIM NEUTRAL
The PF checks the rudder trim is within the tolerance (±0.3 ° L(R)) and announces “NEUTRAL”.
Below the line
• FLIGHT CONTROLS CHECKED (BOTH)
Both pilots confirm that the flight controls check was performed.
The PF then the PM announces “CHECKED”.

BEFORE TAKEOFF

Above the line

• BRIEFING CONFIRMED
This item prompts the crew to consider any changes since the takeoff briefing was conducted and the
performance was calculated. If not, the PF will announce “CONFIRMED”. If either the departure path, or the
performance has changed, stop the aircraft, set the parking brake and refer to TAKEOFF DATA/CONDITIONS
in PRO-NOR-SOP-10.
• FLAP SETTING CONF ____ (BOTH)
The PF checks and compares the flap setting on the E/WD and PERF TAKEOFF page .
The PF announces the configuration displayed on E/WD e.g. “CONFIG 1+F”. The PM verifies the flap setting
and also announces it, e.g. “CONFIG 1+F”.
• T.O SPEEDS & THRUST ____ (BOTH)
The PF reads aloud V1, VR, V2 and thrust setting on his FMS PERF page while PM checks V1 and V2 on the
PFD and the Thrust Rating Mode and Thrust Limit Value on the E/WD. The PF announces e.g. “One Two Five,
One Two Five, One Two Nine, Flex Fifty two”.
The PM reads aloud V1, VR, V2 and thrust setting on his FMS PERF page while PF checks V1 and V2 on the
PFD and the Thrust Rating Mode and Thrust Limit Value on the E/WD. The PM announces e.g. “One Two
Five, One Two Five, One Two Nine, Flex fifty two”.
• ATC SET
The PF checks that the transponder is set correctly (Mode Selector AUTO, XPDR Selector 1 or 2 (depending
on who is PF), ALT RPTG Switch to ON) and correct code is set. The PF announces “SET”.
• RADAR & PRED W/S ON & AUTO
The PF checks on the ND that the weather radar is ON. The PF checks the Memo section of E/WD that PRED
W/S OFF is not displayed. The PF announces “ON AND AUTO”.

• ECAM MEMO TO NO BLUE

The PF checks no blue items on the ECAM memo and announces “TAKEOFF NO BLUE”. In case the CIDS has
the option for CABIN READY installed, the PF checks no blue (except CABIN READY) items on the ECAM
memo and announces “TAKEOFF NO BLUE, EXCEPT CABIN, CABIN READY”

Below the line

• T.O RWY ____ (BOTH)

The PF and PM confirm that the line-up is performed on the intended runway and intersection. The PF then
the PM announce the runway and intersection (e.g. Runway one four Left Bravo four).
Note: This checklist item does not relief the crew from performing the mandatory 2 step/inter-cockpit
confirmation that the crew is cleared to enter a RWY (PRO-NOR-SOP-11).
• CABIN CREW ADVISED
The PF confirms that the PM advised the cabin crew „CABIN CREW, SEATS FOR DEPARTURE". The PF
announces “ADVISED”.
• TCAS ____
The PF checks the TCAS mode selector is set to "TA/RA" and announces “TA/RA”.
Note: Do not read from the ND, as it will always indicate TA ONLY below 1.000 ft AGL.
• ENG MODE SEL ____
The PF checks whether the ENG MODE SEL switch is set to NORM or IGN/START. The PF announces
“IGNITION” or “NORMAL”
• PACK 1 & 2 ____
The PF checks the PACK 1 pb-sw, PACK 2 pb-sw and APU BLEED pb-sw on the AIR overhead panel. The PF
announces “ON” or “ON supplied by APU” or “OFF”.

AFTER TAKEOFF/CLIMB

Above the line

• LDG GEAR UP
The PF checks on the LANDING GEAR INDICATOR PANEL that all gear are up and locked. The PF announces
“UP”.
• FLAPS RETRACTED
The PF checks on the E/WD that the flaps and slats are retracted and announced “RETRACTED”.
Below the line
• BARO REF ____ (BOTH)
The PF and PM check and read their altimeter setting. The PF also checks the standby altimeter. The PF then
the PM announce e.g. “Standard”.
Note: This is a checklist item, and not to be confused with the altimeter settings procedure.

APPROACH
• BRIEFING CONFIRMED
• SEAT BELTS ON
The PF checks the SEAT BELTS memo on the E/WD and PF announces “ON”.
• BARO REF ____ (BOTH)
Both pilots check and read their altimeter setting. The PF also checks the standby altimeter (CM1). The PF
then the PM announce e.g. “QNH One Zero One Three”.
Note: This is a checklist item, and not to be confused with the altimeter settings procedure.
• MINIMUM ____ (BOTH)
Both pilots check the baro or radio minimum on the FMA.
The PF then the PM announces e.g. “BARO Four hundred fifty feet” or “RADIO One hundred sixty feet”.
• ECAM STATUS CHECKED
The PF will check the E/WD whether the STATUS REMINDER (STS) is displayed and announces e.g.
“CHECKED”.
• ENG MODE SEL ____
The PF checks whether the ENG MODE SEL switch is set to NORM or IGN/START. The PF announces
“IGNITION” or “NORMAL”

LANDING CHECKLIST
• CABIN CREW ADVISED
The PF confirms that the cabin secure report is received and announces “ADVISED”.
• A/THR SPEED / OFF
The PF checks that the A/THR system is in either in SPEED mode or OFF and announces e.g. “OFF”.
• AUTOBRAKE ____
The PF will check and confirm the selected AUTOBRAKE mode on the WHEELS SD page and announces e.g.
“LO”. This is also a reminder to the crew to consider changed conditions.
• ECAM MEMO LDG NO BLUE
o LDG GEAR DN
o SIGNS ON
o CABIN READY (if installed)
o SPLRS ARM
o FLAPS SET
The PF checks no blue items on the ECAM memo and announces “LANDING NO BLUE”. In case the CIDS has
the option for CABIN READY installed, the PF checks no blue (except CABIN READY) items on the ECAM
memo and announces “LANDING NO BLUE, EXCEPT CABIN, CABIN READY”

AFTER LANDING
• SPOILERS DISARMED
The PF confirms on the E/WD and the pedestal that the spoilers are disarmed and announces “DISARMED”.
• RADAR & PRED W/S OFF
The PF checks on the ND that the weather radar is OFF. The PF checks the Memo section of E/WD that PRED
W/S OFF is not displayed.
The PF announces “OFF”.
• FLAPS ____
The PF checks on the E/WD that the flaps and slats are in the intended position and announces e.g.
“RETRACTED”.
Note: The reply is not generic “RETRACTED” as, for example, suspected contamination or a suspected
birdstrike might require the crew to leave the flaps in a different position. In this case, the PF might
announce e.g. “FULL due contamination” or “3 due expected birdstrike”.
• APU ____
The PF will start or delegate the start of the APU before shutting down one engine (respect the minimum
cooling time whenever possible), in order to provide power to the engine fire extinguisher, avoid electrical
transients and enable galley and IFE operation. If One Engine Taxi is not intended for safety or operational
reasons, consider delaying the start of the APU. The PF announces e.g.“START”.

PARKING
• ENGINES OFF
The PF checks the master levers and engine parameters on E/WD and announces “OFF”.
• PARKING BRAKE OR CHOCKS ON/SET
The PF checks the PARK BRK memo or confirms that the ground personnel set the chocks. The PF announces
“PARKING BRAKE ON” or “CHOCKS SET”.
• APU BLEED ____
The PF checks on the overhead panel whether APU BLEED is selected ON or not (depending on outside
conditions) and announces e.g. “ON”.
• SEAT BELTS OFF
The PF checks on the E/WD that the SEAT BELTS memo is not shown and announces “OFF”.
• EXT LT ____
The PF checks that the exterior lights are, situation dependent, set in the correct position. The BEACON will
always be OFF (and must be announced) when the checklist is read, and all other lights need only to be
called if not in the default position for the phase of flight. The PF will announce e.g. “BEACON OFF, WING
ON”.
• FUEL PUMPS OFF
The PF checks the FUEL pb-sw on the overhead panel and announces “OFF”.
• Consider HEAVY RAIN
Note: This item is supposed to remind crews about the supplementary procedure “GROUND OPERATIONS IN
HEAVY RAIN” (PRO-NOR-SUP-ADVWXR).

SECURING THE AIRCRAFT (read&do)

• ADIRS OFF
The PF checks that ALL IR MODE selectors on the overhead panel are set to OFF and announces “OFF”.
• OXYGEN OFF
The PF checks the CREW SUPPLY pb-sw on the OXYGEN overhead panel and announces “OFF”.
• EMER EXIT LT OFF
The PF checks the EMER EXIT LT sw on the SIGNS overhead panel and announces “OFF”.
• SIGNS OFF
The PF visually checks the NO SMOKING or NO PORTABLE/ELEC DEVICE sw (as installed) on the SIGNS
overhead panel and announces “OFF”.
Note: This item is called SIGNS as the actual switch label differs between aircrafts.
• APU AND BAT OFF
The PF checks the APU pb-sw and the BAT pb-sw on the overhead panel and announces “OFF”.
Note: Wait until the APU flap is fully closed (about 2 min after the APU AVAIL light goes out), before
switching off the batteries
• Consider COLD WEATHER
Note: This item is supposed to remind crews about the supplementary procedures that might be applicable.
