Kirje putoaa vanhan miehen kädestä lattialle. Hän istuu siinä kuin
jähmettyneenä, aivankuin jokin salaperäinen kylmyys olisi
jäädyttänyt koko ruumiin…
Silloin tuntuu hänen sydämensä taas vavahtavan: hän on taas
kuulevinaan ilkeän, sähisevän kuiskauksen:

— Ja minä…
— Sinä lörpöttelet…
— Iskekää se kuoliaaksi!
