A TRIP AROUND DELHI


Delhi! How familiar this name sounds to all of us. Everyday, we
hear this name in some context or the other. Almost daily, we
also see different scenes of Delhi on the television. Delhi is
known for its historical places. Highrise buildings, wide roads,

flyovers and a large number of vehicles can be seen in this city.

The river Yamuna flows through Delhi. Delhi shares its
boundaries with the states of Uttar Pradesh and Haryana.
Delhi is a beautiful metropolitan city. Many places of tourist
interest are located here. Hundreds of people, not only from
our own country but also from other countries, come here to
see these places.
Pointing towards the first picture, the teacher asked, “What
is the name of this building?”

Some children replied - Rashtrapati Bhavan.


Do you know, the President of our country lives here.
It is a huge building.
It has three hundred and forty rooms.
There are beautiful gardens in the Rashtrapati Bhavan. They
are known as the Mughal Gardens. During spring season,
when colourful flowers bloom, the beauty of these gardens is
worth seeing.

1. Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru was the first Prime Minister of
India. He was very fond of children. The children of our
country lovingly call him “Chacha Nehru”.

While coming out from the Rashtrapati Bhavan, we can see


the India Gate at a short distance.
The names of martyrs have been engraved on the India Gate.
A flame {jyoti} burns here continuously. It is called the “Amar
JawanJyoti”. This flame burns in the memory of India’s martyrs.

Every year just before the Republic Day Parade on 26th


January, the Prime Minister pays homage to the martyrs here
on behalf of the whole country.

This is the Parliam ent House.


It is circular in shape. It looks very beautiful from outside.
The meetings of the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha are held here.
Do you know, that all the laws of our country are passed
here?

This is the picture of the Red Fort. Most of you may be familiar
with this name.
It is made up of red sand stone. This fort was built by the
Mughal Emperor Shahjahan.
Every year, on one of the national festivals our Prime Minister
hoists our National Flag here.
Do you know the name of that national festival?
Yes, the Independence Day.

This is the picture of the Qutub Minor.
It is situated in South Delhi. It was built by Sultan
Qutubuddin Aibak. It was the tallest monument of
that time.
Near the Qutub Minar, there is
an Iron Pillar. t
It was made several hundreds
years ago. It is rustproof.
Among the other monuments,
Humayun’s Tomb and the Old
Fort are famous.

This is another important monument of Delhi - The Bahai
Temple.
It is made of white marble. It’s shape is like a lotus. It is also
known as the Lotus Temple. The beauty of the temple is
worth seeing.
