Adaptation mechanism Component of an adaptive sys-
tem that drives the adjustable parameters of the
system.
Adaptive predictor Adjustable predictor of the output or
the state of the plant whose parameters are driven by a
parameter adaptation algorithm.
Direct adaptive control The parameters of the controller
are directly adapted by the adaptation mechanism that
processes the plant-model error.
Index of performance Measure of the performance of a
system.
Indirect adaptive control Adaptation of the parameters
of the controllers is done in two steps: (1) estimation
of the process parameters and (2) computation of the
controller parameters based on the current process es-
timated parameters.
Model reference adaptive control Direct adaptive con-
trol technique that uses a filter called reference model
for specifying the desired control performance.

On-line parameter identification Recursive parameter
estimation techniques based on the use of an adjustable
predictor and a parameter adaptation algorithm that
processes sequentially the input-output data as they are
available.
Parameter adaptation algorithm Recursive algorithm
for updating the adjustable parameters that is used in
the adaptation mechanism.
Plant-model error, prediction error, adaptation error
Measures of performance error used directly or indi-
rectly in parameter adaptation algorithms.
Self-tuning control Indirect adaptive control technique
that uses an on-line estimation of the process parame-
ters for the computation of the controller parameters.
ADAPTIVE CONTROL is a set of techniques for auto-
matic adjustment in real time of controllers in order to
achieve or maintain a desired level of performance of
a control system when the process parameters are un-
known or change with time. These techniques have been
