A. LESSON PREVIEW/REVIEW

Introduction
Hello, PHINMA Ed students! Welcome to GEN 013! There are a lot of advantages to tropical country like
Philippines. Tourism is the main reason people are attracted to the tropics and are plenty of options. Be it
Hawaii, Bahamas, Maldives, Fiji, or the Caribbean and Philippines; you’ll see millions of tourists making
reservations to islands and enjoying the view. These Advantages of Tropical Climate are worth experiencing
while you are planning to visit any tropical country. Aside from that Philippines is one of the richest resources to
provide food and other shelter. Now let’s identify more the natural resources of the Philippines.

B.MAIN LESSON Content and Skill-Building

The Philippines has a bounty of minerals, cropland, timber, and coastal and marine resources. These
natural resources make up an estimated 19% of the nation’s wealth, contributing to the country’s consistent
GDP growth. However, rapid economic development is placing pressure on the country’s already stressed
natural resources, exacerbated by the impacts of global climate change.

The implementation of natural capital accounting in the Philippines is timely, as the current
administration emphasizes governance reforms that include transparent and science-based decision making
while pursuing sustainable, inclusive, and resilient growth.

What are the natural resources of the Philippines?

Forest resources

Forests give invaluable environmental benefits by

providing watershed for rivers, habitat for a multitude of flora and
fauna species, protector of soils, and regulator of water flows and
carbon cycles. More than half of the country’s land area is
classified as forest lands. It continues to be the major source of
income for more than 100,000 people aside from contributing to
the total export earnings of the country

Land and soil resources devoted to agricultural uses

Land and soil resource, particularly those devoted to

agricultural uses, are important resources of the country because
it is directly related to food production, which necessitates the
understanding of its nature and characteristics to optimally
manage and
conserve them

Fishery resources

The country’s fishery resources comprised the cultivated

and non-cultivated fish stocks and other aquatic animals in the
ocean, inland and coastal waters as well as in fishponds and fish
farms. The coastline extends to about 18,000 kilometers with
territorial waters covering 2.2 million square kilometers. The
fishery sector is likewise important in Philippine economy. In
1988-1993, the sector contributed an average of 4.5 percent to
the country’s GDP and employed around 1.4 million Filipinos
which comprised six percent of the total labor force

Mineral resources

Minerals are natural substances, usually comprising

inorganic element or compound with orderly internal structure and
characteristics, chemical composition, crystal form, and physical
properties. Any concentration of these minerals, with a potential
economic value that can be extracted at a profit, is considered a

mineral resource. Mineral resources can be divided into two major categories - Metallic and Nonmetallic.
Metallic resources are things like Gold, Silver, Tin, Copper, Lead, Zinc, Iron, Nickel, Chromium, and Aluminum.
Nonmetallic resources are things like sand, gravel, gypsum, halite, Uranium, dimension stone

Water resources

Water resource is mobile and it occurs as both stock and flow.

Surface water tends to flow, evaporate, transpire, and seep, while
groundwater exists as stock, usually subject to recharge flows. It also
serves as an environmental media that assimilates water pollutants.
Its production involves economies of large scale that is evident in
water storage, conveyance and distribution consumed by varied
users.

Renewable V.S Non-renewable resources

Renewable natural resources

Let's look more closely at renewable natural resources. They are the ones that can grow again. Trees
are a good example. If cut down, they can regrow from seeds and sprouts. Animals are another example. Baby
animals are born and grow up. They replace older animals that die.

Non-renewable resources

Now, let's look at nonrenewable natural resources. They are found in the ground. There are fixed
amounts of these resources. They are not living things, and they are sometimes hard to find. They don't regrow
and they are not replaced or renewed. They include the fossil fuels we burn for energy (natural gas, coal, and
oil). Minerals, used for making metals, are also nonrenewable natural resources. Nonrenewable natural
resources are things that take longer than a person's lifespan to be replaced. In fact, they can take millions of
years to form
