“King of the roads, retiring for good?

As the year progresses, certain issues have yet again circulated in the nation.
Jeepneys were hailed as one of the important symbols of Filipino culture and have
played a massive role in the country’s history – specifically during the American
colonization. Through modernization, the open-air combat vehicles used during World
War II were then modified to accommodate civilians as a means of transportation.
Unfortunately, recent studies from Nikkei Asia state that Jeepney’s diesel engines
produce large amounts of air pollution contributing more to climate change. Thus, the
government moves to the pursuance of the Jeepney Phase-out.

The year 2023 sparked various controversies that perked into the Filipino's
vicinities. Jeepney Phase-out was a double-edged sword as the civilians would say.
Indeed, it does lessen the mass production of diesel through the phasing out of the old
jeepneys and replacing them with a more modern model. However, in this case,
Filipinos are worried that drivers will lose their livelihood – since most are not able to
provide their own for the modern jeepneys, and most of their needs would mainly come
from being a Jeepney driver.

The best solution would probably be removing the Jeepneys that are already old,
by replacing them with new ones to lessen the emission of air pollution. Options to also
use transportation that lessens the use of diesel would also be appropriate, rather than
opting to use modern mini buses like the government has proposed, since not all of the
drivers will surely be able to afford such expense given their livelihood is not even
enough for their family’s needs.

Jeepneys have been dubbed “Kings of the roads,” as it is a vehicle that has been
known to be a Philippine icon. Although it saddens the majority to let the iconic vehicle
be put to rest and replaced by modern ones, it has to be somewhat done to propose a
solution that could lessen the harm it could cause to the environment. No matter how
persistent people may be, time will change, society will grow and eventually, the King of
the roads will have to step down, and put its crown down.
