The childhood of our national hero was simple. Jose Protacio Rizal Mercado
Y Alonso Realonda was born in June 19,1861 in Calamba Laguna. He was the
second son and the seventh among the eleven children of Francisco Mercado
and Teodora Alonso. Rizal came from a family of Chinese immigrants, but they
began using Mercado as their last name to hide their family background because
of sentiments against Chinese. Rizal’s first teacher was his mother. Jose was not a
stout boy or strong child however he had a strong will and her mother discovered
that he has a talent in writing poems.
