Authenticity.
tasks that are meaningful to students doesn't mean its necessarily interest-based BUT it is clear WHY we are doing this communicate the BIG IDEA and it must go beyond getting a credit or earning a mark... understanding the relationship with your audience... which means understanding that you HAVE an audience Want students to think/say If I didnt have an assignment, Id still be participating in this process. this idea of authenticity isnt just for English and History, but should be included across every subject... authenticity doesnt just come from the student teacher relationship... if you are only perfomring for an audience of one... that isnt authentic especially in a Web2.0 world
Assessment.
often defines the authenticity of a task often changes the nature of the student's relationship w/ a task if it is "worth a lot" that changes their desire to complete a task we understand that assessment is far more powerful when it can be built into an authentic: as learning for learning of learning Our projects were able to make the assessment come alive for students Why am i doing this? should be the question that drives students to learn... not Why am I getting this mark?
Cross-Curricular.
authentic assessment can occur across courses/schools/classes/ages Need a clear WTF? / goal Connect to a broader goal that makes sense to the kids. Start with WHY. We dont learn one subject at a time. Historical Significance. Being a well-rounded learner is cross-curricular.
Our Attempts.
we want to be transparent. we dont have all the answers. it didnt work perfectly. but thats why they are attempts and not exemplars.
Scott gives context. Dan talks about his context and assessment.
What We Learned.
- we can disengage them from the marks economy easier than we think. (Does it matter if we can understand human behaviour?) - Students want the why? That is effective engagement. - Collaboration doesnt have to be synchronous. - Students care when they have an audience. - Students can be very GOOD when assessing each other. - Students have the same eyes and might be better at empathizing with other students.
