CONCEPTS
Factoring difference of two squares is finding the factors of the difference of two
perfect squares.
In factoring difference of two squares, you need to check first if the given is a difference of two squares. The
first and last terms should be perfect squares and the sign in between them should be negative. If one of the
terms is not a perfect square or if the sign in between the two terms is positive, it’s not an example of
difference of two squares.

ILLUSTRATION To illustrate, let's factor .

Now, looking at , we know that and are perfect squares and the sign in between them
is negative. It means that it is a difference of two squares. Now follow the steps to factor them.

step 1 step 2
Get the square root of the two terms. Write the factors as sum and difference.

The square roots are and .

Sum Difference

The factors of are and . We write the factors as .

EXERCISES
Now try to factor the following polynomials. Write your solutions then box your final
answer.
