Micro-Project Report

" Lathe Machine"

1. Brief Introduction/

Rationale Lathe Machine

A lathe is a machine that revolves the workpiece about an axis to

accomplish various operations such as turning, facing, taper turning, knurling,
grooving, parting off, thread cutting, reaming, etc.

-7-
To execute various lathe machine operations on a lathe, the workpiece may
be supported and driven by any one of the following techniques:

1. Workpiece held between centers and tool driven by carriers and

catch plates.
2. Workpiece held on a mandrel supported between centers and driven by
camiers and catch Plates
3. Held and driven by chuck with the other end supported on the
tailstock center.
4. Held and driven by a chuck or a faceplate or an angle plate.

The above techniques of holding the work may be categorized under

two headings:

1. Workpieces are kept between centers.

2 Workpiece supported by a chuck or any other fixture.

8
Types of Lathe Machine Operations.

1. Turning
a. Straight Turning
b. Rough Turning
c. Taper Turning

2. Facing

3. Thread Cutting

4. Knurling

5. Drilling

6. Boring

7. Chamfering

8. Parting off

9. Grooving

-9-
Turning:

It is the most typical type of operation in all lathe machine operations.

Turning removes extra material from the workpiece to create a cylindrical
surface to the desired length.

The job is held between the center or a chuck and rotating at a necessary
speed. The tool moves in a longitudinal direction to give the feed toward the
headstock with the appropriate depth of cut. The surface finish is very good.

- 10 -
a. Straight Turning:

The workpiece is kept on the chuck and it is created to rotate about the axis,
and the tool is fed parallel to the lathe axis. The straight turning creates a
cylindrical surface by drawing extra metal from the workpiece.

b. Rough Turning:

It is the method of discarding extra material from the workpiece at the

lowest time by applying high-rate feed and heavy depth of cut. in rough
turning the average depth of cut 2mm to 4mm can be given and feed is from
0.3 to 1.5mm per revolution of the work

c. Taper Turning:

A ”taper” is the uniform expansion or reduction in the diameter of the

workpiece and is measured along with its length.
Taper turning means producing a conical shape by an incremental
deduction in diameter from a cylindrical workpiece

- 11 -
2. Facing:

It is an operation of decreasing the length of the workpiece by

providing the perpendicular to the lathe axis. This process of
decreasing a flat surface on the end of the workpiece. For this
operation, a regular turning tool or facing tool may utilize. The cutting
edge of the tool should be set to the same height as the center of the
workpiece.

Facing consist of 2 operations

Roughing: Here the depth of cut is 1.3mm
Finishing: Here the depth of cut is 0.2-0.1mm.

- 12 -
3. Thread cutting:

It is a significant operation in the lathe to get the continuous ”helical

grooves” or ” threads’‘.
When the threads or helical grooves are created on the out surface of the
workpiece is called external thread cutting. When the threads or helical
grooves are created on the internal surface of the workpiece is called
internal thread cutting. The workpiece is rotating between the two
centres i.e., live centre and dead centre os the lathe.

Here the tool is moved longitudinally to get the necessary type of thread.
When the tool is moved from the right to the left we get the left-hand
thread. Also, when the tool is moved from left to right we get the right-
hand thread.
Here the motion of the carriage is fed by the lead screw. A pair of change
gears drives the lead screw and by rotating the handle the depth of cut can
be controlled.

- 13 -
4. Knurling operation

It is a process of obtaining a diamond shape on the workpiece for

gripping purposes. This is done to feed a better gripping surface when
used by hands. It is accomplished using a knurling tool. The tool consists
of a set of hardened steel roller, and it is kept rigidly on the toolpost.

- 14 -
5. Drilling:

Drilling is the operation of making a cylindrical hole in a workpiece. It is

accomplished by a rotating tool, the rotating side of the cutter, known as
a drilling drill. In this operation, The workpiece is rotating in a chuck or a
faceplate and the drill is kept in the tailstock drill holder or drill chuck.

- 15 -
6. Boring:

Boring is the operation of widening the hole which is already drilled,

punched, or forged. It cannot create a hole. Boring is similar to the
external turning process and can be conducted in a lathe. In this
operation, the workpiece is revolved in a chuck or a faceplate, and the
tools which are fitted to the tool post are fed into the work.

It consists of a boring bar having a single-point cutting tool that widens

the hole. It also repairs the roundness of a hole. This technique is
adopted for boring small-sized works only. The speed of this procedure
is slow.

- 16 -
7. Chamfering operation:

It is the operation of getting a beveled surface at the edge of a

cylindrical workpiece. This operation is done in case of bolt ends and
shaft ends. Chamfering aids to evade harm to the sharp edges and
covers the operation getting hurt during other operations.
Chamfering on the bolt assists to screw the nut easily.

- 17 -
8. Parting Off

Parting off is the operation of separating the part from the raw
material on a lathe machine. Most small parts machined on a lathe
include a paring process, thus making it one of the most popular
operations.

- 18 -
9. Grooving:

It is the method of decreasing the diameter of a workpiece over a

very narrow surface. It is accomplished with a groove tool. A
grooving tool is identical to the parting-off tool. It is often done at
the end of a thread or adjacent to a shoulder to leave a little
margin.

3. Outputs of the Micro-Project

we successfully get all information about operations that perform on

lathe machine lathe has a wide range of applications in manufacturing
industries. Executing any operation on the lathe is much easier than on
other machines and learning about this machine is equally easier

4. Skill Developed / Learning outcomes of this Micro-Project

1. Teamwork
2. Communication skills
3. Able to get all information about all lathe
machine operations.

5. Conclusion

A lathe is a machining tool that features a rotating workpiece and a

stationary cutting tool. The workpiece is secured to the headstock or
tailstock, which rotates the workpiece while it presses against a stationary
cutting tool.
