WHAT IS CREATIVITY?

© Dr. Mohamed H. Zaky 2023 9
WHAT IS CREATIVITY?

Creativity is problem-solving with relevance and novelty.

Relevance means we actually have to solve the problem in order to be

creative.

Novelty is how different or unique that solution is.

WHAT IS INNOVATION?
© Dr. Mohamed H. Zaky 2023 11
WHAT IS INNOVATION?

Innovation includes new ideas, ways of looking

at things, procedures, and valuable products.

Innovation requires hard work and dedication,

as many good ideas are never explored.

WHY DO WE
NEED
CREATIVITY
AND
INNOVATION?

WHY DO WE NEED CREATIVITY AND INNOVATION?

Problems are solved through new ideas and thoughts, so creativity

is a valued skill because no two problems are alike.

Your creative side can tackle a situation from various perspectives

instead of linearly.

Hence, you'll be a valuable person in any situation.

© Dr. Mohamed H. Zaky 2023 14

Without creativity, we would be unable to innovate,
and without innovation, creativity would just be an idea
that never leaves our minds.

Theories of Creativity, Innovation and Change

Jenga theory
• The theory states that creativity and innovation involve adding and subtracting issues and items to
build a new, complex one.
The functionalist theory
• To make major changes in the organization, one must know its structures and systems. Empirical
research, data collection, and analysis can lead to unique solutions that correct present research
and operational mistakes.
The interpretive theory
• This theory claims that creativity and innovation are subjective; one's thoughts may be seen
differently by peers. What is novel, high in quality, or task appropriate may vary from one person,
task, or environment to another.

Theories of Creativity, Innovation and Change

The radical humanist theory

• The theory links creativity, innovation, and personality. They believe that human consciousness
depends on organizational conceptions and goals, affecting a person's potential to generate new
ideas.
The radical structuralism theory
• In this theory, social change requires conflict. The theory's supporters accept and explain that
some institutions, arrangements, and processes interfere with people's creativity and ability to
make systemic changes.
Systems theory
• Creativity and innovation are based on products, processes, places, and people. In a social context,
creativity explains activities rooted in certain situations to produce real change at work.

Thinking versus Intelligence
Intelligence describes cognitive capability, whereas
thinking investigates how we employ it.

Smart people will have cognitive capacity, quality

information, and effective thinking skills.

However, a smart person with inadequate thinking

skills can make bad decisions.

Divergent versus Convergent Thinking

© Dr. Mohamed H. Zaky 2023 25

Divergent versus Convergent Thinking
Divergent Divergent thinking explores numerous different
Thinking answers to develop unique ideas.

It is spontaneous, free-flowing, and 'nonlinear,'

resulting in growing ideas.

It is typically utilized with convergent thinking, which

follows a set of logical stages to arrive at a 'right'
solution.
© Dr. Mohamed H. Zaky 2023 26
Divergent versus Convergent Thinking
Convergent It is the capacity to offer the "right" answer to typical
Thinking problems that don't need much imagination, such as IQ
exams.

Critical thinkers employ criteria or probability to form

decisions while solving problems.

Exercise one -
Incomplete figure test
The incomplete figure test is a drawing exercise.

You use a small, simple scribble, like a half-circle or loop, to

create a full drawing.

To do this in a group, several people use the same scribble to

work from, and then they compare the drawings.

Seeing how others interpret the same small design can

expand your creative thinking and give you new ideas.
