ABSTRACT
Traditional medicinal system consists large number of plants with various medicinal and pharmacological
importance and hence represents a priceless tank of new bioactive molecules. Pongamia pinnata (Linn.) Pierre is
one amongst these, found all over the world. The phytoconstituents present in it mainly belong to the category of
flavonoids and fixed oils. Different parts of this plant are traditionally claimed to be used for the treatment of
broad spectrum of ailments including bronchitis, whooping cough, rheumatism, diarrhea, dyspepsia, flatulence,
gonorrhea and leprosy to list a few. Because of its thick network of lateral roots, it is a favored plant for
managing earth corrosion and connecting sand mounds. Its oil is a source of biodiesel. It has also alternative
source of energy, which is renewable, safe and non-pollutant.

INTODUCTION
A medium-sized glabrous tree, Pierre is
also known as Karanja in Hindi and
Indian Beech in English. The majority
of Ayurvedic and Siddha practitioners
in Tamil Nadu use Pongamia pinnata to
treat a variety of illnesses, including
diabetes mellitus.
