Laboratory Activity No. 1

What’s in a Material?
I. BACKGROUND INFORMATION
The human body is a very complex combination of finely-tuned machinery. Every organ system is dependent on the
other to carry out its physiological functions along with maintaining an internal equilibrium. Homeostasis is the ability of the body
to maintain an internal balance in the body. Through homeostasis, organisms undergo evolution because of how they adapt to the
external environment. But how does homeostasis and evolution keep everything in balance?
II. OBJECTIVES
At the end of the activity, the students should be able to:
● Demonstrates how our body maintains homeostasis when exercising.
● Observes the process of natural selection in an environment.

III. HYPOTHESIS

Investigation Question: How does reaching homeostasis relate to the evolution of an organism?

VI. PROCEDURE

PART 1: Homeostasis
1. Each group will be assigned to use a breakout room where they are given enough time to enter.
2. In a resting state, the students will get their heart beat for 60 seconds and record it.
3. As a group, brainstorm and agree on a form of light exercise.
4. After performing the light exercise, the students will get their heart beat again for 60 seconds and record it.
5. As a group, brainstorm and agree on a form of vigorous exercise.

6. After performing the vigorous exercise, the students will get their heart beat again for 60 seconds and record it. (NOTE:
Those who are experiencing shortness of breath after performing the light exercise and those diagnosed with heart
problems are EXEMPTED and advised NOT TO DO the vigorous exercise.)
7. After recording and observing the data, the students will be given enough time to discuss with their groups about their
observations.
8. After discussing with the group, the students will go back to the main room, and will be given enough time to finish their
answers.

PART 2: Online Simulation (Natural Selection)

1. Each group will be assigned to use a breakout room where they are given enough time to enter.
2. One member of the group will share a screen in order to start the laboratory activity.
3. Once the member shares the screen, they will access the online simulation link.
4. The student assigned to share the screen will select “INTRO”. (NOTE: The students will be tasked to
screenshot/picture an observation where they could justify their answer to their hypothesis)
5. Press “SELECT” and choose if it will be in the equator or aquatic environment.
6. Then, press “ADD A MATE” in order to watch how the population will grow.
7. After adding a mate, ADD A DOMINANT OR RECESSIVE MUTATION in order to observe how the bunnies will
mutate through time.
8. Then, ADD WOLVES or LIMITED FOODS to observe how the population will grow.
9. Click the “DATA PROBE” to get the exact number of bunnies.
10. Then, VIEW how the population, proportion of traits and pedigree chart (optional) of each population of bunnies.
11. After observing and taking a screenshot, the students will be given enough time to discuss with their groups about their
observations.
12. After discussing with the group, the students will go back to the main room, and will be given enough time to finish their
answers.

Note to students: You are expected to create a flow chart of the procedure that you employed for this experiment. MAKE
SURE THE DIAGRAM/FLOW CHART CAN BE EASILY UNDERSTOOD/FOLLOWED BY ANYONE. You may
integrate the steps outlined in the procedure but do not directly copy and paste.

VI. ANALYSIS AND DISCUSSION

1) Explain why the heart rate changes during exercise. (2 points)

________________________________
2) Predict what would happen if your heart rate failed to increase during exercise and describe why. Evaluate what would happen if your body
failed to return to normal after exercise. (3 points)

________________________________
3) Are environmental factors such as prey a big part of how an organism would evolve? Explain. (3 points)
