CASE STUDY

“ROSE RESTAURANT: WHAT NOW MY LOVE”

I. Executive Summary
Ms. Rosemarie Ginez is the owner and the manager of the Rose Restaurant that located in the
center of the commercial district of Santiago City. Rose's future husband, whom she met in the
restaurant, is a San Jose City native, his widowed mother runs a large palay trade enterprise. Rose
planned to build another branch of her Restaurant in Cauyan City but her mother in law passed away.
Rose's husband became the heir to his mother's business so he immediately went to San Jose to manage
their property and business. They both have a managed business and they are far from each other so they
miss each other. Rose is now considering her family's chances of success in business if she decides to
keep the palay trading enterprise alone. When her assistant reported a 49 percent increase in her
restaurant's income from the previous year, her decision-making became more challenging. I think what
Rose should do is find a trustee that she can really trust in the field of restaurant operation and help her
husband run her mother in law's palay trading firm. The couple should practice having Time
management for their business and their relationship.

II. Statement of the Problem

Rose Restaurant has developed her food business with love to become successful and for a
long time, together with her husband, they faced problems throughout operating with their business. The
short term and long term problems are categorized as follows:
 Experiencing more complicated when it comes in decision making
 Lack of time management
 Pros and cons of having time management

III. Causes of the Problem

Decision-making is one of life’s most important responsibilities. This is what makes life on going.
There are things that make a person unique from one another. It is perhaps the most important component
of a manager's activities. It plays the most important role in the planning process. When the managers plan,
they decide on many matters as what goals their organization will pursue, what resources they will use, and
who will perform each required task. According to John Adair, (1997), decision-making is all about
deciding what action to take by a group or individuals; it usually involves a choice between two options. He
also included that thinking should not be considered as a painful and laborious feeling in the mind because
it is fun in a way that it trains the brain and it will be natural for a person to think always. As for the Rose
Restaurant, although they can’t decide which business they need to focus more on and which business they
will letting go, based on the book entitled “Decision Making and Problem Solving Strategies, deciding and
thinking should not be considered as a painful and laborious feeling in the mind because it is fun in a way
that it trains the brain and it will be natural for a person to think always.
Decision-making includes past experiences, cognitive biases, an escalation of commitment,
individual differences, including age and socioeconomic status, and a belief in personal relevance.
People do not have the same intellect, attitude, and mind when it comes to making their own move. There
are different people who experienced something in the past and wished to correct it by making the right
decisions like Rose and her husband. There are also that has influenced the way they think because of
certain individuals. They make their own decisions if they know that it will make them happy and satisfied.
Rose and her husband are aware of the difficulty of maintaining the two businesses which are four hours
away by car from each other. They will miss each other for days every week if they decided to keep both
businesses. According to an article on the website www.universalclass.com, emotions have been a big part
when it comes to decision making. It is stated that when emotions get the upper hand when it comes to
decision making, the results could be good or devastated. The article also stated that emotions could be a
big help. Before arriving on what decisions to make, one must learn how to recognize and name their
feeling. According to Thomas 2007, effective decision making to support useful planning is accepted as one
of the keys to project success. Its purpose was not to examine all aspects of project planning, but to develop
the concept of how practitioners should shape proper planning by effective decision making for effective
navigation of the project and reduction in project failures. This raised the logical question about what can be
done to improve decision making in project planning. It also emerged that as the limitations of formal
deterministic planning are becoming more widely recognized for project planning and a growing
management attention have taken place for the predictive planning and effective decision making process.
Peter F. Drucker also said that effective decision making is an art which obviously cannot be
earned overnight, hence, needs to be nurtured in time. However, even ab effective leader cannot remain
oblivious to certain hurdles which chronicle hi/her decision-making capacity. When Rose and her
husband have an effective decision with their restaurant business, they will able to have also a positive
effects and equal damage that caused by an ineffective decision. Hence, they will remain vigilant about
the repercussions caused by their decisions.
Lack and poor time management means that someone are not able to see the big picture and plan
accordingly. It often makes difficult or even impossible for an individual to complete things and project
on time. According to Lakein (1973), who suggested that time management involves the process of
determining needs, setting goals to achieve these needs, prioritizing and planning tasks required to
achieve these goals, several other definitions were suggested. Besides time management, other terms,
such as time structure (Bond and Feather, 1988), were used interchangeably with essentially the same
meaning. Because a commonly accepted definition of the concept was lacking, we found itdifficult to
determine the exact content of time management in past research, to describe the current state of affairs,
and to identify which parts are responsible for what results. Based on the literature, we suggest a
definition of time management as “behaviors that aim at achieving an effective use of time while
performing certain goal-directed activities”. This definition highlights that the use of time is not an aim
in itself and cannot be pursued in isolation. The focus is on some goal-directed activity, such as
performing a work task or an academic duty, which is carried out in a way that implies an effective use
of time. In Rose situation, where she continues to manage her restaurant and at the same time her
husband’s business, she is aware that sometimes she is short on time and they will miss each other for
days every week if they decided to keep both businesses. Time assessment behaviors, which aim at
awareness of here and now or past, present, and future (Kaufman et al., 1991) and self-awareness of
one’s time use (attitudes, cognitions, e.g. Wratcher and Jones, 1988), which help to accept tasks and
responsibilities that fit within the limit of one’s capabilities. Planning behaviors, such as setting goals,
planning tasks, prioritizing, making to-do lists and grouping tasks which aim at an effective use of time.
According to Maxwell Quotes, time management is an oxymoron. Time is beyond our control, and the
clock keeps ticking regardless of how an individual lead their lives. Rose Restaurant need a priority
management to maximize the time that they have when she manages her business. Some of the pros of
having time management are lesser rework, more free time, no wasting of time, allow the time in other
things and time management if it is done in a proper manner can turn out to be very useful.
But if someone is not able to do it right then it can affect the whole planning and work. Being very busy,
procrastination, multitasking and ineffective task scheduling are some of the cons of having time
management. Rose Restaurant need to approach to time management to create time to focus on
important things before they become urgent. According to Stephen Covey’s approach that sometimes it
is need to do something earlier. The real skill is to commit time to process that enable to do things more
quickly and more easily to ensure that they get done automatically.

IV. Decision Criteria and Alternative Solutions

To address the Rose Restaurant business problems, regarding more complicated when it
comes in decision making and lack of time management, they must consider the following alternative
solutions:

 First solution is creating a time audit, in order for Rose to know what to do next and so that she
doesn’t focus on just one task, she should write in her notes her plan and time for her restaurant
and her time for her husband. This allows you to compare and contrast how you actually spend
your time with how you want to spend your time. Cons on creating an audit time, there is a
possibility that she will waste her time by just planning to create a time audit and it is also
possible that she will have less time for her restaurant in case she divides the time for her
husband and her business. She also can no longer give time to her personal work because she
focuses on her husband and her business.
 Second is Quit avoiding making a decision, how will Rose know what to choose if she is afraid
to decide. She is afraid to choose between her husband and her restaurant when in fact she can
hire a trustworthy person to handle her restaurant and she visits when something needs to be
fixed at her restaurant, she can accompany her husband in managing the palay trading firm so
that they are also together and it is not difficult for them to be apart. Cons on quit avoiding
making a decision, when we actually make a decision, it is inevitable that something or whatever
will be lost in our decision. A lot of time is also consumed if you always think of making an
immediate decision for a problem. Rose may have a hard time reaching a decision especially
when she have an indecisive character.

V. Recommended Solutions, Implementation and Justification

In order to determine Rose solution in every problem, Rose must consider to have a time
management and good decision making when it comes to her business and her personal life with her
husband. Taking into consideration that human choices are easily influenced, we are interested in
investigating whether the role of specific decision biases influences the decision-making process in the
context of environmental transformations. Choosing what's most important gives you a structure by
which you can organize your day. Rose daily tasks may change, but her top goals and values are more
important and lasting. Her priorities, then, are the tasks that most align with her goals and values. The
less control she have over her priorities, the more likely it is that you'll spend too much time on
distractions rather than productive activities. Taking time to decide on, and regularly review, Rose
professional and organizational goals and values will help you prioritize her daily to-do list, while
helping you realize and eliminate less important tasks and distractions that may be intruding on her time.
Rose overall lifestyle decisions contribute to your level of effective time management on and with her
business together with her husband.
