INTRODUCTION

We feel our self-fortunate enough for investigating the sub- Construction Of

Esrs,Gsrs,Feeder Pipelines,Pumping Arrangement And Allied Works In Sambalpur Town
(Phase Ii & Iii)Zone-4 Of Smc)(Amrut/Od/Sambalpur/Ws/39 &43).The sub-soil
investigation works were taken up by Maks Consultant, Satyavihar, Bhubaneswar, Odisha.
The proposed project site was an undulated roughly level ground.
OBJECTIVES OF THIS SUB SOIL EXPLORATION
The objective of this Geo-technical investigation is to optimize the foundation system
for proposed Project with-in the safe bearing capacity of the soil and allowable settlement,
It consists of the following
 Determination of type, size and depth of foundation- system by analyzing the soil
properties
 To suggest a conclusive recommendation for the type of foundation system to be
adopted which would be economically viable and structurally safe for the proposed
structures of the projects at the proposed site.
Limitations of Investigation
The scope of Geo-technical exploration is confined within the framework of
agreement and Technical specification of the client. All the field and laboratory experiments
has been carried out as per the relevant Indian Standard Code of practice. However the
direction of Engineer-in-charge of the Client has been given due emphasis.
Nature of investigation work
The over all investigation consists of the following:
i. Visual reconnaissance of the site.
ii. Field Work-boring borehole and collection of soil and core samples
iii. Laboratory experiments, determination of soil parameters.
iv. Decision on foundation system to be adopted in the present case using Our
Engineering judgment, based on the current practice.
The detailed Geo-technical investigation work that was carried out consists of two parts.
1. Field investigation, it consists of
 Location: Three numbers of bore holes with due consultation with Chief
Authority of client.
 Boring / drilling up to 15.0 m. below N.G.L
 Conducting standard penetration test at the locations @ 1.5m interval.
 Collecting SPT from the Boreholes.
 Observation of the depth of water table in the boreholes.

2. Laboratory investigation it consists of

(i) For Soil

 Grain size analysis.
 Determination of Bulk/dry density.
 Determination of void ratio.
 Determination of soil moisture content
 Determination of liquid limit.
 Determination of plastic limit
 Determination of specific gravity
 DFS Test.
(ii) For Rock

FIELD WORK

1. SELECTION OF BOREHOLE

Three numbers of Bore-holes has been selected by the Engineer in charge in order to
obtain comprehensive sub-soil data for this site with a provision of borings up to 15.0
meters depth.

(I) BORING:
It is the main part of sub- soil investigation work as the soil samples were collected
for different tests at different levels. The sub-soil exploration work at the proposed site was
carried out by wash boring per IS: 1892 – 1979 .

2. STANDARD PENETRATION TESTS:

Standard penetration test plays a major role in sub- soil investigation
determination of safe bearing capacity of soil in non cohesive type soil ,particularly in non-
cohesive granular sandy soil and where the UDS could not be collected either due to non
cohesive nature of soil .The SPT tests were conducted as per IS: 2131-1981 respectively,
in different levels of the bore hole in a continuous manner using spilt-spoon samplers at
locations . The SPT sampler was lower inside the borehole after drilling the required level
and is driven by a 65.00 kg. Hammer with a free fall of 750 mm. driving 450 mm in three
stages 150 mm each and the number of blows for each 150mm penetration for 2 nd& 3rd 150
mm drive recorded as “N”. Refusal were considered for N>50.

4. COLLECTION OF SOIL SAMPLES

4.i. SPT Samples
For investigation Standard Penetration Tests conducted at different 1.50 m intervals
or at change of soil strata as per of IS; code in the bore hole & samples were collected for
laboratory analysis.

4.ii. Disturbed soil Samples

Disturbed representative soil samples in sufficient quantity from the borehole has been
collected at 1.50 m. interval for different tests. The soil samples collected were stored in
Polyethylene bags with proper sign and identification.

In this bore hole it was seen that three layers i.e clay , Poorly graded gravell-silty-
sandy clay & Soft rocky strata has seen from top soil level up to explored depth of 10.0 mtr
depth. It was seen that a very loose , high cohesive, high plasticity &high swelling clay soil
is continuing from 0.0 mtr to 6.40 mtr depth. Where the UDS sample was collected at-
4.50mtr depth and the N values at 1.5, 3.0 & 6.0 mtr are 4, 5, & 8. But below 6.40 mtr depth
a medium compacted, low swelling & medium plasti city poorly graded gravel –silty sand-
clay is continuing up to 7.20 mtr deph. Where the N value at 6.50 mtr is 18. (The details of
soil layer have been mention in Field bore log chart).
The SPT values “N” has exceed the limiting value of 50 in this bore hole at 7.50 mtr
depth. The N values show regular trend with different depth of bore hole. The DFS Values of
