INTRODUCTION
FIELD WORK
1. SELECTION OF BOREHOLE
Three numbers of Bore-holes has been selected by the Engineer in charge in order to
obtain comprehensive sub-soil data for this site with a provision of borings up to 15.0
meters depth.
(I) BORING:
It is the main part of sub- soil investigation work as the soil samples were collected
for different tests at different levels. The sub-soil exploration work at the proposed site was
carried out by wash boring per IS: 1892 – 1979 .
LABORATORY TESTS
The laboratory-tests were conducted on selected representative disturbed soil
samples collected from the Borehole drilled were at the proposed site. The tests include
Grain size analysis, Natural moisture content, D.F.S, Specific Gravity and Liquid limit, Plastic
limit, Plasticity index, Particles size distribution and compressive st. tests on representative
samples were also carried out. All the tests conducted confirming to the requirements of I.S
specification in the Laboratory approved by Govt. of Orissa. The results of all these tests
have been annexed separately.
The details of the test results has been shown test result sheet separately.
2. NATURAL MOISTURE CONTENT:
The natural moisture content were determined from different soil samples of the
Borehole at different depths as per IS: 2720(Pt-II)-1973: The results of all these tests has
been annexed separately.
3. DETERMINATION OF BULK DENSITY:
The Bulk densities has been determined from different soil samples of the Borehole at
different depths in the laboratory from the soil samples as per IS: 2720(Pt-II)-1973.
4. DETERMINATION OF SPECIFIC GRAVITY:
The specific gravity of the soil samples has been determined at different levels as per
IS: 2720(Pt-III)-1980. The result of all these tests has been annexed separately.
5. LIQUID-LIMIT / PLASTIC LIMIT: The liquid and plastic limits of soils has been
determined as per the relevant as per IS: 2720(Pt-v)-1985 Code of practice. The results of
all these tests have been annexed separately.

One number of Bore hole up to 15.0 meter depth below NGL were drilled to
determine the comprehensive soil data from test results in a realistic manner. From the
laboratory study of soil properties such as Grain Size Analysis, DFS Test, Specific Gravity,
S.M.C. and Waterberg’s limits shows a consistently increasing trend with depth. The average
values of the index parameters are shown below.

In this bore hole it was seen that three layers i.e clay , Poorly graded gravell-silty-
sandy clay & Soft rocky strata has seen from top soil level up to explored depth of 10.0 mtr
depth. It was seen that a very loose , high cohesive, high plasticity &high swelling clay soil
is continuing from 0.0 mtr to 6.40 mtr depth. Where the UDS sample was collected at-
4.50mtr depth and the N values at 1.5, 3.0 & 6.0 mtr are 4, 5, & 8. But below 6.40 mtr depth
a medium compacted, low swelling & medium plasti city poorly graded gravel –silty sand-
clay is continuing up to 7.20 mtr deph. Where the N value at 6.50 mtr is 18. (The details of
soil layer have been mention in Field bore log chart).
The SPT values “N” has exceed the limiting value of 50 in this bore hole at 7.50 mtr
depth. The N values show regular trend with different depth of bore hole. The DFS Values of
bore hole soil samples are high to very high. The allowable S. B. C of soil strata has been
computed at different depth using SPT value “N” , C, Phi and index parameters as per the
requirements of IS: 2131 & 6403 – 1981 considering the circular type foundation at
different depths are shown graphically below.

From the analysis of the test result it is suggested that the type of foundation and
dimension of the footing for the proposed structure may be decided at the design
level ascertaining the test result of the bore hole presented in the test report.
The effect of Wind, Earth-quake Land-Slide (possibility) if any should considered for
heavy structure.
