mass ow rate through the nozzle for a nozzle throat area of 50 cm2 when the back pressure
is (a) 0.7 MPa and (b) 0.4 MPa.

Problem 13 Design of a Compressible Flow Passage


The duct between the turbine and exhaust nozzle of
a jet engine is 0.60 m in diameter (Fig. below). The
gas (γ = 1.4 and r = 265 N · m/kg · K) owing in
the duct has stagnation pressure and temperature of
275 kPa and 700 K, respectively. The gas ow rate
is 82 kg/s. Find the relevant areas of a nozzle for
expanding the gas to standard atmospheric pressure.

Problem 15 Airow through a Converging-Diverging Nozzle


Air enters a converging-diverging nozzle at 1 MPa
and 800 K with negligible velocity. The ow is
steady, one-dimensional and isentropic. For an exit
Mach number of Ma = 2 and a throat area of
20 cm2 , determine (a) the throat conditions, (b) the
exit plane conditions, including the exit area, and
(c) the mass ow rate through the nozzle.

Problem 16 Shock Wave in a Converging-Diverging Nozzle


If the air owing through the converging-diverging
nozzle of problem 15 experiences a normal shock
wave at the nozzle exit plane, determine the en-
tropy change across the shock and the mass ow
rate through the nozzle. Approximate the ow as
steady, one-dimensional and isentropic from the
nozzle inlet to the shock location.
