About PMI-PMP Exam
• PMP Examination refers PMBOK Guide as the primary
one:
• 6th Edition of PMBOK Guide – from March 26, 2018 (current one)
• PMP Examination Questions:
• Developed in accordance with ISO/IEC 17024 standard
• Developed and validated by a global group of PMP holders
• Are referenced to current PM practices, including those of PMI’s
• Are monitored through psychometric analysis
• Satisfy the test specifications of the PMP Examination Content
Outline (ECO)
• PMP-ECO has both unique and overlapping contents when
compared with PMBOK Guide

Process – In 7 Simple Steps
• Step – 1: Check your eligibility - “Aspiring PMP”
• Step – 2: Take the 35 formal project management training
• Step – 3: Fill the PMI-PMP Application
(http://www.pmi.org)
• Step – 4: Pay the exam fee after approval of completeness
of you application
• Application Approved  “Candidate PMP”
• Audit is optional as it is random. But it happens.
• Step – 5: Schedule a Date for the Exam
• Step – 6: Take the Exam and be a “Certified PMP”
• Step – 7: Continue being a PMP by learning regularly
(many miss it after being a PMP!)

PMP Exam Eligibility

• Non-overlapping experience
• Experience does not mean as a designated Project Manager
• Experience should be in all 5 performance domains
(Initiating, Planning, Executing, Monitoring & Controlling, Closing)

PMP Exam Information
• Total Number of Questions = 200
• Number of Exam Questions = 175 (Scored)
• Number of Pretest Questions = 25 (Unscored)
• For You – No way to know. Take it as 200 Questions
• Total Duration = 4 hours
• Exam will be preceded by a 15 minutes tutorial (15
minutes) and will be followed by a Survey (15 minutes)
• Pass percentage – Unknown
• Exam Score – PASS or FAIL
• Exam Grading – On 5 Performance domains

PMP Exam Application Fill-up

• Exam Application will have the following parts:


• You information – Name, Address, Mailing details, Highest
level education details
• Experience Verification – Project, Title, Role, Org Name,
Project details in IPECC
• Education Details – 35 Contact training and any other
Education details
• Optional Information – Survey questions
• Code of Conduct
• Review and Submit

Candidate PMP to Certified PMP
1. 35 Hour Formal Project Management Training

• Nearly 40% of your preparation will happen here


• Your coach/trainer – Makes a lot of difference
• 1 day of interaction with an expert PMP is equivalent to 1 month of
reading books!
• Money should not be your No.1 criteria
• Post 35 hour training, you should:
• Know the names of all process groups, knowledge areas & process
• Know how and why they interact with each other in a project
• Know all the important & key inputs, tools & techniques and ouputs,
known as ITTOs (you cannot and need not remember all)
• Be proficient in all the mathematical areas

2. PMI Audit Process

• Applications can be audited by PMI


• During audit, you will be asked the following:
• Copies of your diploma/degree/global equivalent
• Signatures from your supervisor(s)/manager(s) for the project(s)
recorded in your application
• Copies of certificates for the 35 PDU contact hour program
• Needed documents - Submit within 90 days
• Audit takes 5 to 7 business days
• Confirmation e-mail sent by PMI on audit completion

3. Preparation Time

• Desirable – 200 to 220 hours


• Minimum – 120 to 140 hours
• Duration – Spread over next 12 to 14 weeks (maximum 24
weeks)
• Toughest part – Tendency will be to elongate
• More you delay, more chances of forgetting.
• Daily Read – 1 to 2 hours every day
• Over weekends – 4 to 6 hours
• Overall weekly – 12 to 15 hours (50 to 60 hours in a month)
• Revise what you have read
• Another tough part

4. PMP Exam

• Exam is to be scheduled online


• Exam scheduling via Prometric:
http://www.prometric.com/pmi
• PMI Eligibility ID needed – alphanumeric ending with E,
e.g., 1234567E1
• You can schedule the exam in advance
• Once the date is selected - available time slot appears
• Select the time at which you can take the exam
• Last minute rescheduling is possible 48 hours (2 days) or
more before the scheduled date.

5. Your Exam Preparation
• Reference Materials:
• Quote – “Books and Friends, Few but Good!”
• Read “I Want To Be A PMP” (if using) at least 3 to 5 times.
• PMBOK Guide twice end to end along with the Book.
• Re-read the reference materials that is given to you by you coach
and training provider.
• Buy one book (max 2) - One that suits your need and helps in your
preparation; Do not read too many as it will load and confuse you
more.
• Simulated Questions:
• Practice, Practice, Practice!
• Be clear on mathematical concepts – answers are objective (unlike
theoretical questions where choices may confuse you)
• Start with 50Questions and move towards 200 Questions

Continuing as a PMP
• Once certified PMP Certification is valid for 3 years
• Holders must achieve 60 PDUs for renewal
• 1 PDU corresponds to 1 hour of professional development
activity approved by the PMI
• PDU is divided into the segments of talent triangle.

Sustaining Benefits
• PMP helps in your PMI-ACP certification
• If PMP, you need not show the project management experience.
• PMP helps in your PgMP certification

MBA program on Project Management
• PMP certification itself considered to be 1 year MBA in Project
Management.
