Laboratory Report
Experiment 3. Metals and Some Aspects of Corrosion
Objective: Compare the corrosion rates of different metals and the corrosion effects of
different electrolytes.

Rust (iron oxide) is formed
when the bleach solution
oxidizes the iron nail and it
rusts over time.

chemical and electrical
reaction of the iron atoms
and salt minerals causes the
iron nail to produce rust
(iron oxide).

The formation of rust in the

salt solution was quicker
compared to the formation
of rust in the bleach
solution. This is because
salt ions quicken the
process.

Copper Bleach Aside from a slight Oxidation is caused by the

copper is durable and
resistive, there was still a
slight reaction. A more
extreme reaction could
occur if the copper wire was
exposed to the bleach for a
longer period of time.

could also react with

If exposed to the salt

solution for a longer period
of time, the copper wire
could show signs of
corrosion.
Conclusion
From what I have observed, different metals have different corrosion rates that
depend on what kind of electrolyte they are exposed to. In the experiment, the chemical
reactions that are observed on the iron nails are more significant compared to the
chemical reactions that are observed with the copper wires. This could entail that
copper is more resistant to corrosion than iron or that some metals are more reactive
than others.
