13. 0.5 kg of certain gas is contained within a system. The system undergoes a constant volume
process. The initial pressure is 4 bar and the temperature is 300K and final pressure is 6 bar.
Determine the heat and work transfer for the process, in kJ.

For gas take cp = 1.005 kJ/kgK and cv = 0.714kJ/kgK (1+1)

14. A tank containing an ideal gas has a volume of 2.0 m3; pressure of 200 KPa and at temperature
300 K. The tank is placed against a metal block the gas expands 5.0 m3 as the pressure remains
constant. Find how much heat & work did the gas absorb.

For gas take cp = 1.005 kJ/kgK and cv = 0.714kJ/kgK (1+1)

15 A gas in a cylinder has a pressure of 200KPa, the piston has a diameter of 3cm and is pulled
out slowly to a distance of 10 cm. if the cylinder is well insulated, calculate the change in
internal energy of the gas and work done. (1+1)

(b) During the steady flow process 10kg/s of fluid passes through an apparatus in which the
inlet pipe is 5m above the exit pipe, the properties of inlet and exit are follows:

17. Determine the Temperature in Rankin scale of 30Kg steam at 18 bar and 8m 3 volume
considering it as (a) Vander wall’s real gas and (b) perfect gas.

Take the critical Pressure=23 MPa, Critical Temperature=650K and Universal gas constant
is 8314 J/Kmol K and molecular weight of steam is 18 Kg/Kmol. (3.5+1.5)

18. (a) An engine takes heat in 1200 KJ/min and output of work from the engine is 10KW.
(i) What is the Engine efficiency? (1)
(ii) What is the Heat rejection of the cycle? (1)

(b) A refrigerator is pumping heat from sink of 15°C to a source of 32°C and produces the
refrigeration (cooling) effect is 5 KW.

(i) What is the maximum COP of Heat pump? (2)


(ii) What is the maximum amount of work input? (1)

19. A cylinder contains 0.5m3of a gas at 0.1 MPa and 800C. The gas is compressed to a volume of
0.13 m3 and the pressure being 0.5 MPa. Determine: (i) The mass of the gas; (ii) The value of index
‘n’ for compression; (iii) The enthalpy of the gas;(iv) heat transfer during compression(v) Work
transfer

20. In a closed system 0.2m3 of air at 300 KPa and 120OC is expand adiabatically to 100 KPa and
then compressed isothermally back to its initial volume. Determine the total heat and work
done by the gas.

For gas take cp = 1.005 kJ/kgK and cv = 0.714kJ/kgK (4+3.5)
