1.0 INTRODUCTION

1.1 Backgound

The Sultan Abdul Samad Library's collections include more than 1 million print volumes and
consist of over 50,000 journal titles, of which more than half are e-journals. UPM students can
search the world's academic literature using a remarkable series of 50 digital research
databases, made reachable by the library's net site. Regarding its focal part in the scholarly
existence of the University, the Sultan Abdul Samad Library - UPM's entire library - lies at the

3.0 BUILDING DESIGN

Perpustakaan Sultan Abdul Samad (PSAS) is effectively open by understudies and instructors.
The primary PSAS library building contains two (2) blocks with a complete floor zone of roughly
19,007 square meters, and it could oblige around 2000 clients at any one time. Throughout the

5.0 COLLECTIONS / RESOURCES
The Library has a sizeable collection of substances which can be borrowed or solely referred to
inside the Library premise. Users need to understand the kinds of materials from several
collections, its area and its usage. Below is the designated records about the materials reachable

1. GENERAL COLLECTION

Consists of textbooks, proceedings, reviews in various problem areas.

 Location: Level 2, A Block and they are arranged in accordance with the type number, A -Z.
 Open shelf collection can be loaned according to categories of users.

2. REFERENCE COLLECTION (MAIN-REFERENCE)


Consists of dictionaries and encyclopedias, directories, atlases, terminologies, glossaries,
manuals, statistical reports, handbooks and almanacks.
 Location: Level 1, A Block. Books in this series have the location symbol 'r' on top of the
name number.
 Reference materials are to be used within the Library only.

3. AUDIO-VISUAL MATERIALS
Consists of audio-visual substances such as:
CD-ROMs, Diskettes, videotapes, slides, films, movie strips, movie loops, sound recordings,
charts, language cards, microfilms, microfiches, kits containing a range of media, transparencies,
etc.
 Location: Ground Level, A Block (kept at Media and Archives Division). Materials in this
collection have the location symbol 'BPD' on pinnacle of the name number.
 Audiovisual materials are to be used inside the Library only.

4. SERIALS COLLECTION
There are three (3) different categories of serials :

4.1. Current Issues

Consists of the most modern-day problems obtained with the aid of the Library.

 The substances are displayed at the Current Journals Display Area, Level 1, B
Block.
 Current troubles are to be used within the Library only.

4.2. Unbound Issues

 Consists of back issues of unbound journals.


 Location: This collection is stored in the Back Issues Room, Level 1, B Block. Please
get the "kk" variety of the journal from the Library Catalogue earlier than asking for
from the Counter.
 Collection of lower back troubles is to be used inside the Library only.

4.3. Bound Issues

 Consists of returned problems of bound journals.


 Location: Bound journals are shelved according to classification number A-Z at
Ground Level 1, B Block and have the region image 'btb' on top of the call number.
 Bound journals are to be used within the Library only.

5. SPECIAL COLLECTION

Special Collection exists for the motive of keeping intellectual property of UPM, in satisfying the
wishes of teaching, learning, lookup and consultancy of the University. The series starts in 1997
as a end result of a combination of few collections i.e. Malaysian Collection, Red Spot Collection,
Thesis, Project Papers, and Modules for Distance Learning Students and Prof Chin Collection.
The Special Collection is positioned at Level 2, B Block. The collections are to be used inside the
Library for duration of two (2) hours barring for modules for Distance Learning Students which
can loaned out for two (2) weeks.

5.1. Malaysiana Collection


 Consists of substances on Malaysian agriculture whether it is published in Malaysia or
abroad. The contents are totally or partly on Malaysia.
 This series has the image "mal" on the call range and can solely be referred for 4 hours.

5.2. Thesis Collection


 Consist of thesis or dissertations of the UPM graduate students (Master and PhD) and
additionally theses and dissertations of the academic/non-academic UPM personnel
from the any Malaysia or overseas greater learning institutions.
 This collection has the symbol "t" on the call quantity and can only be referred for 4
hours.

5.3. Project Paper Collection


 Consist of closing yr UPM scholar venture papers (only the latest 5 years)
 This series has the image "lp" on the name quantity and can solely be referred for four
hours.
5.4. Prof. Chin Collection
 Collection consists of gifts and donations from Prof. Dr Chin. Hoong Fong (former
lecturer of the Faculty of Agriculture, UPM) consists of the areas of agriculture, botany
and conservation of plant genetic resources, particularly in the discipline of seed
technology.
 This series has the image "chef" on-call wide variety and can solely be referred for four
hours.

5.5. Red-Spot Collection


 Consists of principal text-books advocated with the aid of lecturers for publications taught
at the University.
 The materials have red-spots denoted on top of the call number and can only be
borrowed for one night.

5.6. Distance Learning Collection


 Consist of modules/lecture notes for Distance Learning, Universiti Putra Malaysia which
are published via the Center for External Education, UPM or formerly regarded as the
Institute of Education and Distance Learning (IDEAL), UPM.
 This series has the symbol "pjj" on the call wide variety and can solely be referred for
four hours for non-PJJ students and can be borrowed by way of PJJ students.

5.7. Limited Collection


 Consists of materials that are declared illegal for distribution to the public by the
Government of Malaysia.
 Collection has symbol "thd" on pinnacle of the name number. Only customers with a
letter of authorization from the Head of Department are accepted to use the materials for
a length of two (4) hours.

6. ONLINE DATABASES

 Library subscribes to on line databases in quite a number fields.

8. BORNEO COLLECTION

 Borneo collection is handy solely at the Library Bintulu (Sarawak) Campus.

7.0 ROLES / RESPONSIBILITIES

All the Corporate and Staff Training Division, Sultan Abdul Samad Library (PSAS), Universiti
Putra Malaysia has Job Description for the Librarians. All librarians have been exposed to the
functions and importance of the Job Description in the organization and learned how to prepare
the Job Description. The list of Job Description is a :

 Establish cooperation and foster a two-way understanding between PSAS and faculty,
schools, institutes, and canters.
 Educate users how to access, identify and evaluate materials from multiple sources through
the Information Literacy Program.
 Providing information advice via telephone, email, fax, mail and face to face.
 Assist in enhancing the development of library collections in related fields.
 Support the need for teaching and learning information for all UPM community.

10.0 CONCLUSION

Universiti Pertanian Malaysia used to be mounted in 1971 due to the merger between the College of
Agriculture, Malaya, and the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Malaya. The Library of the College of
Agriculture, Malaya hence grew to become the Universiti Pertanian Malaysia Library. When the
university was once named Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) in 1997, the Library grew to be the
Universiti Putra Malaysia Library. As of 23rd May 2002, the Library has been named as Perpustakaan
Sultan Abdul Samad (PSAS), Universiti Putra Malaysia, after the late great-great-grandfather of the
current Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Ibni Almarhum Sultan Salahuddin Abdul
Aziz Shah Alhaj. The Library is without difficulty on hand by way of students and lecturers. The
significant PSAS library building contains two (2) blocks with a complete ground place of about 19,007
rectangular meters, and it should accommodate about 2000 customers at any one time. Besides the
Main Library, branch libraries are located at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Faculty of
Veterinary Medicine, Faculty of Engineering & Architecture, and the Bintulu (Sarawak) Campus
Library. To accomplish its mission to grant extraordinary resources, services, and amenities to aid
learning, teaching, research, and consultancy things to do of UPM, the Library has over the years
constructed up its collection in several subject fields, both in print and digital format. The Library
currently holds a series of 670,000 volumes of books and specific journals and a series of maps,
sound recordings, microforms, videotapes, and slides. The Library additionally subscribes to 80 online
databases, which furnish access to about 80,000 full-text articles on various fields and are accessible
from and within and outside UPM via our Website (http://www.lib.upm.edu.my). PSAS is additionally
equipped with Wi-Fi net facilities, enabling users to use their laptops within the Library building. PSAS
strives to provide fantastic statistics services and facilities for our users/clients in line with the ever-
changing trends in information and technological know-how and the university's current wishes. PSAS
also affords Post Graduate Wing located at B Block. This location is nicely outfitted for analysing and
