In this lesson, you are going to explore Popular Music.

By now you are already familiar with Afro-Latin American and Popular music.
After having performed some representative samples of these music genres, you are
now expected to be able to identify these genres by just hearing them.
It is also high time that you deepen your appreciation of the said music by
exploring on other ways by which these genres may be created or produced, or at
least make some adaptations of them in our local scene.
This is going to be another challenge because it is you who will do the
exploration by comparing Afro-Latin American and Popular music to those we
commonly hear in our locale.

music. Eminnem and Francis magalona are famous for hiphop/rap. Etta James
and Jaya are soul singers.
Distinguishing The Music
The music created by country or culture is only made complete when there
is instrumentation or accompaniment. African music, for instance, as you
remember, is mainly founded on percussion instruments. That is why, you will
always associate this music with rich instrumentations.

Accompaniment gives life to vocal music, while instrumentation makes


accompaniment possible. As a young artist, it is a challenge on your part to be able
to discriminate music – that is, to identify the quality, cultural background, type of
genre, as well as the instruments used to produce the music you have heard or
listened to.

Recalling Instruments of the Afro-Latin American Music

It is important to recall the common instruments of the different cultures


that produced the music we study.

Musical Instruments of Africa

Idiophones (percussion instruments that are struck with a mallet)


Ex.: Balafon, Rattles, Agogo, Atingting kon, Slit drum, djembre, shere

Membranophones (usually drums from animal membranes)

Lamellaphone (percussion that are made of plucked tongues or keys)

Chordophones (instruments that produce sound through vibrating strings)


Ex.:Lute, musical bow, zither, Kora, zeze

Aerophones (produce sound by trapping or enclosing a column of air)


Ex.: Flute, reed pipes, whistles, trumpets

Every Music Is Distinct

Every time you listen to any genre of music, you will immediately have the
idea about the type of music you are hearing by just hearing the accompaniment
available. Indeed, instrumentation does a lot to any music. It gives the idea of the
taste of the song/music and the theme it tries to convey.
Maracatu, for example, is characterized by the use of its basic instruments:
alfaia drum, tarol, caixa, gongue, agbe, ganza or minero. Acoustic music is
characterized with the minimal use of instruments, basically limited to beatbox
(drum), guitar, and sometimes, a wind instrument like the flute. Rondalla music, as
you have learned, have also its requirement of instruments.

In the Philippines, a wide array of instruments are being used by musicians


to produce the music desired, depending on the genre, or even the availability of
local instruments.

It may be said that Philippine music is rich also because of its abundant
range of musical instruments, covering both the native instruments and those
assimilated to the country’s music through influence.
Local Instruments as Possible Innovations

Philippines has a great number of musical instruments classified under


specific groups based on various uses, functions and manner of playing. As a
review, let us tackle them briefly.
Instruments are classified mainly into percussion, string, brass, and
woodwind. Percussion instruments are played by tapping, striking, or hitting.
These include the tambourines, cymbals, drums, and many others. Strings are
those that are plucked to produce sound. These basically include the guitar, violin,
banduria, etc. Brass instruments are those made generally of metal, and are having
a mouthpiece to buzz in the lips. They include the trumpets, trombone, and other
similar instruments. Woodwind instruments are inclusive of but are not limited to
wood. These produce sound by blowing air across an edge or between reeds.
Examples are oboe, piccolo, and flute, among others.

Innovative Music

Music is ever dynamic. Musicians and artists alike continue to innovate and
improve music. One example of this is the rise of A cappella vocal bands in the
modern times. These bands make use of vocal prowess in achieving musical
outputs almost similar to full song/music (with singer and accompaniment) by just
using the human voice, and the body as a natural instrument in singing. It is a
clear proof that human music can be created and recreated.

Dissecting the Accompaniment

To dissect means to examine in details. You are going to listen to “Circle of


Life,” a soundtrack made popular in the movie “The Lion King.” This song is
inspired by the rich African jungle, as you will notice later.

Artistic expression has evolved through the age of human civilization. The
development of art has progressed throughout the course of human existence. The
advent of computers and software programs has created another impact through
which artists can express themselves.

Computer generated imagery (CGI) is the application of computer graphic


technology to create visual effects. This is used in films, television programs,
commercial and print media. Likewise, video games are also most common
applications of computer-generated imagery. Video games most often use real-time
computer graphics but include pre-rendered “cut scenes” for the game introduction
and presentation.

Digital Photography is the art and science of producing and manipulating digital
photographs. A camera that encodes digital images and videos digitally and stores
them for later reproduction is digital camera. Digital Photography is one of the
several forms of digital imaging, the image is exposed, captured, and stored
electronically.

Video games are computer – controlled games. It is an electronic game that involves
interaction with a user interface to generate visual feedback on video device.

Digital Painting refers to a computer graphic software program that uses virtual
canvas and virtual painting box of brushes, colors, and other supplies. It is a
method of creating an art object(painting) digitally and/or a technique in making
digital art in the computer.

Imaging videos are concerned with generating, collecting, duplicating, analyzing,


modifying, and visualizing of videos. They are used to serve as backdrops for scenes
but instead of creating the image after the recording of the camera, they manually
create the scene from physical models of objects and environment.

1. Visit some landmarks in your community.
2. Take pictures using cellular phone.
3. Review on your computer the pictures and choose the best photos.
4. Enhance the quality of pictures using Adobe Photoshop software. To improve
the image quality using Adobe Photoshop, perform the following:
a. Open your photo via Photoshop
You may crop your photo using the crop tool on the left tool bar.
This can remove any unnecessary background in the image

b. If image is cropped, click on Image at the top and select


Adjustments/Auto levels. After cropping, back to adjustments, run
and select Auto Contrast. After which, under adjustments, run Auto
Color.
c. Bring up the curves palette with by pressing Ctrl + M. Drag the
diagonal line until you get the balance that you like. You may drag it
twice.
d. In your main image layer, click the FILTER menu. Open the sharpen
sub-menu and run Unsharp Mask. This will make your images look
more sharper.
5. Create a photo blog and describe the significant feature of the landmark.

Recreational activities are those activities held during one’s leisure time.
Their purpose is to refresh oneself by doing activities that are considered by an
individual as enjoyable.

Active recreational activities are activities that require large body


movements such as running, throwing, or jumping or those that are sports-specific
movements.
Active recreational activities are highly recommended for health promotion. These
activities require more amounts of energy to be expended than usual energy
expenditure. This means that you do activities that make you exert more effort
than what you usually do.

To identify the intensity of physical activity, we need to use the Rate of


Perceived Exertion (RPE) chart. It is a chart that assesses the intensity of
exercise based on how the participant feels; a subjective assessment of effort which
ranges from 6 (very, very light) to 20 (very, very hard) with one (1) point increments
in between.
Benefits of Recreational Activities
People of different ages can benefit from regular physical activity. Significant
health benefits can be obtained by engaging in moderate amounts of physical
activity on most, if not all days of the week. Participation in regular moderate
physical activity can lead to improved physical fitness.

Regular moderate physical activity means engaging in the relatively vigorous


bodily movement for 30 minutes to 1 hour that can elevate your heart rate.
“Regular” here refers to being active in most, if not all days of the week. About 3 to
4 times per week or more are the recommended times of exercise for an individual.
You may opt to have rest days or easy days in between to allow your body to
recover from physical exertion.

Some of the benefits of engaging in recreational activities include;


 enhances personal growth
 helps to build self-esteem and confidence
 reduces tension and anxiety
 encourages spiritual renewal and personal growth
 increases mental relaxation
 generates a general sense of well being
 teaches positive conflict resolution skills
 provides alternative to self-destructive behaviors.

Physical fitness is an individual’s concern; you should have an idea about


the present level of your participation in different physical activities. Evaluation of
your current level of participation in physical activities is important because it gives
you important data on the areas to be improved or enhanced. This allows setting
reasonable fitness goals and planning not only suitable but enjoyable physical
activities as well.

Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002 (RA 9165)


This Act protects citizens from the harmful effects of dangerous drugs to
their physical and mental well-being. Accordimg to the policy, here some which are
considered as unlawful acts and are subject to penalties and fines.

essential chemicals.
b. Selling, trading, administering, dispensing, delivering, distributing, and
transporting dangerous drugs or controlled precursors and essential
chemicals
c. Maintaining a drug den, drive, or resort
d. Manufacturing of dangerous drugs or controlled precursors and essential
e. Manufacturing or delivery of equipment, instrument, apparatus, or other
paraphernalia for dangerous drugs or controlled precursors and essential
f. Possessing dangerous drugs during parties, social gathering or meetings
g. Cultivating or culturing plants classified as dangerus drugs or sources of
such
h. Unnecessary prescribing dangerous drugs
Tobacco Regulation Act of 2003 (RA 9211)
This law protects people from the sale, use, and advertisements of hazardous
tobacco products. In order to promote a healthful environment, the Act absolutey
bans smoking in public places, most especially in centers of youth activities,
elevators and stairwells, fire-hazardous places, within public and private hospitals
and medical clinics, airport and non-smoking area should be utilized.
The Tobacco Regulation Act of 2003 or RA 9211 is an act regulating the
packaging, use, sale, distribution, and advertisements of tobacco products and for
other purposes. The government shall institute a balanced policy whereby the use,
sale, and advertisements of tobacco products shall be regulated in order to promote
a healthful environment and protect the citizens from the hazards of tobacco smoke.
What places are included in the smoking ban?
Sectio 5. Smoking Ban in Public places. Smoking shall be absolutely phohibited in:

1. Centers of youth activity such as playschools, preparatory schools,


elementary schools, high schools, colleges, and universities, youth hostels,
and recreational facilities for the public
2. Stairways and elevators
3. Places which fire hazards are present, including gas stations and storage
areas for flammable liquids, gas explosives, or combustible materials
4. Within the building and premises of:
a. Public and private hospitals
b. Medical clinics
c. Dental clinics
d. Optical clinics
e. Health centers
f. Nursing homes
g. Dispensaries
h. Laboratories
5. Public transportations like jeeps, buses, taxis, and tricycles
6. Food preparation areas like kitchen.

The Act also restricts access to sale of tobacco products to minors. It may not be
sold within 100 meters of a school. There should be a proper signage that indicates
target consumers.
When it comes to advertising and promotions, the Act provisions the printing of
warnings on cigarette packs in either Filipino or English. In addition, health
warnings should be included.
Lastly, the government should provide programs and projects for those who shall
be affected by the passing of the Act. One example of which are the tobacco growers.
