CHAPTER 1

Introduction

Background of the Study

Carts have played an important role in the development

of civilization, from the first push cart arose to transport

heavier loads, wheeled cart eventually supplanted the usage

of animals for transportation and cargo.

As the industrial revolution progressed this cart continued

to show up as a new form of transportation become the norm,

and are still in use today as a baggage cart at many

industry. The name or style of cart becomes known as

trolley, which we can call a dolly.

A Stair Climbing Trolley is an industrial device that

uses a hand truck to transport products up and down stairs.

It is usually used for transporting goods in warehouses and

construction sites. Its unique design and Tri-Star wheel

configuration make it more convenient to use.

4

A study was conducted by P. Jey Praveen Raj and his

colleagues designed mechanism such as a hand trolley

utilized to ease the pressures of lifting. (Ajay et al.,

2017) the developmental study provides a tri-wheel trolley

but not as good when lifting a high load because of the

material used and the wood plate that support the load was

not efficient. Another research has made by M. Jacovich

(2005) the modified hand truck carrying a moderate load and

was able to ascend stairs. Due to the lack of a welded wheel

base, the prototype was not tested with a full 300 pounds.

Many researchers develop the stair climbing trolley,

however, most of this prototype focuses on the two wheels,

some are tri-wheel that it can climb up the stairs but the

materials are not suited to the design factor of the

mechanism in the development.

In contrast, this would be the primary reason for the

researcher to develop the prototype to have a tri-wheel

trolley using the steel material which has a brake to

control the wheel to stop, and has a movable screen bag to

ensure that the load is safe.

5

Objective of the Study

Generally, this study aimed to develop a staircase

climbing trolley.

Specifically, the study has the following objectives:

1. To design and fabricate the stair climbing trolley,

its main components like the tri-wheel, transmission

shaft, frame, and the brake.

2. To determine the maximum load capacity of the trolley

in a 90-degree-angled staircase.

3. Enable to solve the stress of the design prototype if

it is safe and satisfactorily meet the standard limit

of the material used.

6

Significance of the Study

The possible result of this study will benefits

directly or indirectly of the following;

Business industry- The findings will provide scientific and

technological information to industry, to minimize the time

and force acquire by their workers through the aid of this

mechanism in transporting the loads and will improve their

productivity.

Future researcher- This research may serves as a reference

to further the study related to the development of staircase

climbing trolley in the future.

Manufacturer- The result of this study will serve as the

basis to utilize possible innovation of trolleys.

People in the community - This study would provide the

knowledge to people about trolley. They will be able to

7

understand how this device is used for easy transportation

of heavy loads, avoid energy loss and saves time.

Scope and Limitation of the Study

This study is limited only to the development of a stair

climbing trolley. The study is concern on its tri-wheel

design but to improve the prototype through attaching a

handbrake and movable screen bag to its body. This mechanism

will be helpful for transferring an object on the stairs

effortlessly than to carry it manually.

8

Definition of terms

To have a better understanding and clarification, the

following is operational meanings of the different terms

used in the study.

Drive Shaft - In this study, the term shaft serves as a

support to the weight of the trolley.

Staircase Trolley - In this study, the term staircase

trolley refers to the device that the researcher intends to

develop. It has three wheels that allow it to transport

loads up and down stairs.

9

Strain - In this study, the term strain refers to a measure

of the amount of a smaller steel bar that take place on the

staircase trolley with a load.

Tri Wheel - In this study, the term refers to the staircase

trolley which is designed and equipped with three wheels.

CHAPTER 2

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

The chapter includes the collection of works and

articles that are related to the development of climbing

trolley. Review of related literature, studies and research

will be discusses to further understand the said study. The

overall concept incorporates earlier study on stair climbing

trolleys as well as the current innovation, which will be

utilized as a model for future researchers. Facts and data

were acquired from a variety of sources, including books,

10

journals, magazines, websites, and unpublished theses, to

provide crucial ideas, insights, and possible solutions to

the design project's development.

Related Readings

In everyday living, there is always a challenge to

transport a large number of goods in varying quantities up

and down stairs, particularly in offices, schools, colleges,

hotels, industries, and apartments where lifts may be

unavailable, overcrowded, or in need of repair. It is very

tiring to carry various objects up and down stairs for

higher floors so many times.

A stair-climbing trolley is an industrial device that uses a

hand truck to transport products up and down stairs. It is

usually used for transporting goods in warehouses and

construction sites. Its unique design and Tri-Star wheel

configuration make it more convenient to use.

Related Studies

Design and Fabrication of Stair Climbing Trolley

11

P. Jey Praveen Raj and his colleagues on level surface,

states that a designed mechanism such as a hand trolley is

utilized to ease the pressures of lifting. However, these

devices frequently fail to carry the burden over short

distances or to carry large goods up the stairs with less

effort than if they were carried manually. The project's

major goal is to develop an effective and user-friendly

means of transporting various goods up and down stairs with

minimal effort on the user's part, as well as to give a

smooth movement when climbing the stairs. The motor is

connected to a similar-rated lead acid battery, which is

then connected to a DPDT switch.

Upon the finding of their study, it recommended that

the material of the stair climber parts can be modified,

since it used mild steel as a material, as this will add to

the stair climber's weight. In order to save weight,

composite materials can be used instead of steel. Second,

the transmission system's mechanism could be altered to

achieve more efficient output. We can utilize gear drive

rather than chain drive. Finally, by utilizing bolts and

nuts or other adjustment mechanisms, the size of the Tri-

12

Star plate may be made customizable to ascend any types of

stairs. (P. Jey Praveen Raj et. al,.2016)

Lightweight Mechanical Staircase Climbing Trolley with

Improved Stress Distribution

The developmental study provide a tri-wheel trolley but

not as good when lifting a high load because of the material

used and the wood plate that support the load was not

efficient. The studies of this mechanism will subject to

improvement of the current stress distribution and also

lighter and tougher materials could be utilized to improve

the overall design of the product. (Ajay et al., 2017)

Design of a Stair-Climbing Hand Truck

The modified hand truck carrying a moderate load and

was able to ascend stairs. Due to the lack of a welded wheel

base, the prototype was not tested with a full 300 pounds.

The stair-climbing hand truck has been demonstrated to be a

viable method for moving heavy weights up stairs safely.

This design, however, is not without problems. One major

concern is that the Blanco mechanism's cyclic spoke loading

will result in wear and fatigue. Furthermore, the product's

13

present power supply adds a substantial amount of weight and

cost. (M. Jacovich, 2005)

Design and Manufacturing of Stair Climbing trolley

The ultimate design in this project was the result of a

sequential examination and adjustment of phases that began

with a simple roller-based design. To achieve increased

efficiency and stability the greater the concentration

focused on the design of the frame and the strength of the

wheels. For navigate the stairwell, a sensor and steering

wheel can be used. The sensor and motor would replace the

manual power that drives the frame wheel. A temporary halt

to reduce shock and noise, a system could be implemented

vibration. The movement would be controlled by a timer

circuit more precise, accurate, and simple to use. (M. Ashok

et. al,. 2019)

Design and Fabrication Stair Climbing Hand Truck

The hand truck was found to be traveling far over the

stair when the trial was conducted. It can move at 20 rpm on

a flat surface without fluctuating, and there was no speed

14

variation over steps. Over time, it was discovered that

there was very little noise and vibration. A stairwell or a

flat surface When the truck came face to face with the

stairwell, it was noticed that it was disrupted, various

step sizes Because of the shape and size of the wheel frame.

Separate frames can be utilized in this project to go across

various sized stairwells. Its size and shape allowed it to

be used on a variety of stair sizes. Based on their study,

they discovered that the hand truck could climb the stair to

its maximum height at an inclined angle of 45 degrees.

Maximum temperature of 44 degrees. It will not be able to

climb the step if the angle is greater than 44 degrees. When

it comes to construction only a few staircases with an

inclination greater than 44° are commonly accessible in

construction. Because a wheel frame with a greater radius

was employed to ascend the stair, the hand truck velocity

was higher than on the flat surface. The hand truck speed on

the stair was 55 in/hr. The truck speed on a ramp, on the

other hand, was not measured. The researchers conclude, even

it had several limitations as a first step in the

development of any stair climbing hand truck, it was a

ground breaking project. During the project's testing, it

15

was discovered that it could carry a heavy weight without

deformation or local fractures if it was designed properly.

Hand truck would be used in real-world production on a large

scale. Despite the projects initial cost although it

appeared to be higher, more precise manufacturing would

reduce this time.

Synthesis and Justification

The evaluation of related studies and literature

provided by the researchers’ vast information on the

development of stair climbing trolley. It provided various

concepts relevant and helpful, particularly about the

stairclimbing trolley. In addition, this information gave

the researchers a further knowledge for the improvement of

the stairclimbing trolley and gain some ideas of what

materials and design should be given a concentration.

Although according to a study conducted of by P. Jey

Praveen Raj et al,.2016, upon with their finding as they

used mild-steel material and it failed to carry the weight

over a short distance, they recommend using a composite

material and using a gear drive in the project design.

This statement contradicts the first objective of our

study which is to design a cart wheel axle shaft assembly

and steel tube material for the trolley which supported by

43

finding that the prototype will be subject to improvement of

the current stress and distribution and also lighter and

tougher materials will be utilized to improve the overall

design of the project (Ajay et al., 2017).

However, the researchers will be limit the load of the

trolley that it can carry and the design is not motorized as

the researcher’s goal is to develop a less cost and helpful

mechanism to lift the heavy load up to the stairs.

ANALYSES, INTERPRETATION, AND PRESENTATION OF DATA

The gathered data were presented, analyzed and

interpreted in this chapter. The data presented in each

table were preceded by a textual discussion.

Determination of critical loading point:

For determining the critical loading point, considering

the reduction factor which is 0.75 that is used to decreased

the estimated strength of structural members, the point from

61

where the pulling force of the load carriage required is

less than the mass of the load, set of load masses are taken

and are plotted against the difference between the load mass

and the pulling force (found by multiplying total mass with

reduction factor). According to Canadian Centre for

Occupational Health and Safety, recommended upper force

limits for horizontal pushing and pulling which whole body

involved is 225 N (50 lbf or 23 kgf).

The Table 1 shows readings for pulling force measured

for given load masses. Referring to the table, it can be

seen that the difference between load mass and pulling force

turns negative between load mass 65 kg and above, the

critical loading factor lies between these values. The

critical loading point shows that the trolley is useful and

efficient for heavy loads up to design limit (65 kg).

SUMMARY, CONCLUSION, AND RECOMMENDATION

This chapter presents the summary of the study, the

conclusions and the recommendations suggested by the

researchers.

Summary

The purpose of this study is to develop a staircase

climbing trolley. Specifically, it sought to: (1) Design and

fabricate the stair climbing trolley, its main components

like the tri-wheel, transmission shaft, frame, and the

brake. (2)Determine the maximum load capacity of the trolley

in a flat surface and in a 90-degree-angled staircase. (3)

To solve the stress of the design prototype if it is safe

and satisfactorily meet the standard limit of the material

used.

Findings

Based on the gathered data, the result implies that that the

trolley is useful and efficient for heavy loads up to design

limit (65 kg) based on the critical loading point of the

trolley with a constant pulling force of 225 N. The

66

calculated flexural stress for the material is within the

allowable stress, thus the design is safe.

Conclusion

Based on the results obtained from the conduct, testing

and experimentation; the trolley is applicable both in flat

surface and staircase. However, it is useful and efficient

for heavy loads up to design limit (65 kg) with a constant

pulling force of 225 N in a staircase considering the

reduction factor which is 0.75 that is used to decrease the

estimated strength of structural members. In addition, in a

flat surface the trolley can carry a maximum load of 100 kg.

The calculated flexural stress for the material is within

the allowable stress of the material, thus the design is

safe.

The design brakes and screen bag make the trolley safer and

more convenient.

Recommendation

Based on the performance and data gathered by the

researchers, the following recommendations were recommended;

(1) the device is recommended to use in both flat surface

67

and in a staircase. (2) The device is recommended to use

thicker metal sheet for triangle plate to improve its

strength and prevent deformation of the materials; (3) it is

recommended to make the total weight of the device lighter

in order to become portable to use and stored and (4) It is

recommended to improve the braking system.

APPENDIX 3

Description of the Device

Staircase Climbing Trolley is a device that used to

transport or carry heavy loads up and down stairs. The limit

of weight it can carry in stairs is about 65 kilogram and in

flat surface is 100 kilogram. The device is made of a tri

wheel with a galvanized iron sheet tri plate, flat bar,

shaft and angle bars painted to avoid rust and corrosion. To

control the wheel to stop and to ensure that the load is

safe, brake and movable screen bag had been used.

73

This device can be very useful to any industries

because it can transfer an object on the stairs effortlessly

than to carry it manually.
