Into the Wild Chapters 14-15

Objective: Determine why Krakauer includes his own misadventures in Alaska. Identify
significant similarities between Krakauer and McCandless. Analyze Krakauer’s purpose in
including certain elements of his story.

Part 1: Identify significant similarities and differences between Krakauer and McCandless:

Similar Different

● ignored advice from helpful people ● Krakauer ever spent as much time
● Had difficult relationships with their outdoors as McCandless
fathers ● McCandless was more extreme
● Both had a love for nature ● McCandless had an entire self-made
● Used nature as an escape/time for ideology on nature and living with it
reflection
● Both were young men

Part 2: Select some of the similarities and differences above, and analyze how they
contribute to understanding Krakauer’s understanding of McCandless:

Krakauer’s experience as a young man working through the world and a love for nature
made him sympathize and relate to McCandless. While other people might have a more
critical view of McCandless, Krakauer’s personal relation to his story might have
influenced his writing. The way Krakauer explored mountains is much like how
McCandlness traveled the U.S.
