The "Death Road" is a rural road that connects a mountain pass,
known as La Cumbre, at 4500 meters elevation, and goes down to the
town of Yolosa, at 1100 meters. It is currently used as a bike path,
and is a notable tourist attraction in the Department of La Paz, which
includes the city of Coroico, at 1700 meters above sea level, as
the most important tourist service center in the area.
The road crosses four different habitats: Subnival (1),
a mountainous landscape with high Andean grasslands, and wetlands
above 3600 meters; Yungas Paramo (2), shrubby grasslands and
very humid Andean elfin forest, above 2900 meters; Cloud forest (3),
mature secondary forest and fragmented primary forest, very humid,
above 2000 meters elevation; Montane rainforest (4), secondary
forest and degraded forest, crop fields and isolated fragments of
humid primary forest, above 1100 meters.
