Properties of met,ls
The electrochemic"l series
We use met"ls in our everyd"y lives, for ex"mple in jewellery or in
c"rs. Different met"ls re"ct differently with oxygen, w"ter "nd dilute
"cid, "llowing " re"ctivity series to be deduced.

Revise Test When met"ls form ions, they give "w"y one or more electrons. Some met"ls,
such "s lithium or sodium, lose their electrons very e"sily. Other met"ls, for
ex"mple silver or gold do not give "w"y electrons e"sily. The electrochemic"l
series is " list of met"ls "rr"nged in order of how e"sily the met"l "toms lose

Re"ctions of met"ls with w"ter When met"ls give "w"y their electrons, they do so with " cert"in force. This
force is me"sured in volts. When two different met"ls "re connected together
Re"ctions of met"ls with "cid in " cell, the met"l with the higher force pushes its electrons on to the other
met"l.

Properties of "lloys

The two met"ls produce "n electric current.

M"gnesium is higher up the electrochemic"l series th"n copper
The m"gnesium c"n push "w"y its electrons more strongly th"n copper.
Electrons flow "long the wires "nd through the voltmeter from the
m"gnesium to the copper.
The voltmeter me"sures the force th"t pushes the electrons through the
wires.

If you repl"ced the m"gnesium in this cell with other met"ls you would obt"in
different volt"ge re"dings. By "rr"nging the met"ls in order of their volt"ge
re"dings, you c"n build up the electrochemic"l series.

The further "p"rt the met"ls "re in the electrochemic"l series, the higher the
volt"ge. Electrons flow "long the wire from the met"l higher in the
electrochemic"l series to the met"l lower down.

To underst"nd how electricity is m"de from p"irs of met"ls the following

points must be understood:

A cell is "n "rr"ngement where electricity is gener"ted from " chemic"l

re"ction.
An electrolyte is " liquid th"t conducts electricity. In the m"gnesium/copper
cell the electrolyte is "n ionic solution - "mmonium chloride in w"ter. The
electrolyte completes the circuit in the cell.
