F0LC 35 OUTCOME 1 - TUTORIAL 5

List including free surface effect

1. An upright ship displacing 14000 t in salt water has KG 9.2 m and KM 10.1 m.
In this condition one side of a DB tank, length 20 m, full breadth 16 m and
depth 1.2 m is full of fresh water. Calculate the list after transferring half of
the fresh water to the other side tank.
(4.01)

2. A ship displacing 15000 t in SW with KG 8.0 m loads 100 t of FW into a

starboard side DB tank having length 20 m, breadth 12 m and depth 1.40 m.
If KM is 10.0 m, calculate the list.
(1.23 Stbd.)

3. A ship with 2600 t of timber on deck sails at a displacement of 16200 t. KG

9.46 m, KM 9.90 m. All tanks are full or empty. On passage the ship uses 260
t of fuel oil (RD 0.900) from Kg 0.80 m and 20 t of FW from Kg 4.00 m. The oil
and water tanks are now slack and have FSM’s (basis FW) of 540 and 40 t×m
respectively. In heavy weather it is estimated that the deck cargo absorbs
15% of its own weight in moisture (Kg 15.00 m) and half of the deck cargo
subsequently shifts 0.12 m to port. Calculate the list.
(4.80 Port)

4. A ship displacing 15000 t in water RD 1.025, KG 7.00 m and KM 8.00 m has a

4 list to starboard. No free surface moments exist at this time. No. 3 and no.
4 oil tanks, each having length 15.00 m, breadth 16.00 m and divided by a CL
bulkhead have to be loaded with 800 t of oil, RD 0.900 being apportioned
equally in all four tanks at Kg 4.00 m, leaving a 3.00 m ullage. Assuming that
the KM is constant, calculate the final list.
(3.78 Stbd.)

5. A vessel displacing 10000 t in salt water has KG 7.00 m and KM 8.00 m. There
is an empty DB tank measuring 20 m × 20 m × 1.6 m deep fitted with a
centreline division.

Calculate the resulting list when the starboard side of the tank is half filled
with salt water ballast.
(4.92 Stbd.)

6. A ship is upright with no slack tanks and has displacement 12200 t, KG 7.10 m
and KM 8.00 m. During the subsequent passage fuel will be used at 25 t/day
from No. 3 DB tank, which measures 20 m in length, 15 m breadth and is 1.00
m deep and is fitted with a centreline subdivision. The oil has RD 0.910.

Calculate the list that would develop if 40 t of deck cargo presently stowed
at Kg 10.15 m, 5 m to port of CL were to be lost overboard after 4 days on
passage. (1.26 Stbd.)
