Activity Procedure
(step-by-step description of the activity and questions you might ask to encourage children’s engagement and thinking)
1. On a rectangle table, arrange the activity for four children at one time. Use trays and place a small Ziploc bag with each tray.
2. Instruct children to wash their hands and label their Ziploc bag.
3. Display cards with how many scoops/spoonful of each item.
4. Provide support to children by assuring them it’s okay if they want to skip an item. Children will count and discuss the items throughout the
activity.
5. Initiate a discussion with the children about your favorite trail mix and what it is used for. Ask them to brainstorm their own trail mix and
write down how many scoops of each to make their special mix. Introduce the numbers in Hmong and ask the children to count in Hmong
and English while counting their scoops. What other languages do children speak? Allow the children to eat and enjoy their trail mix.
Sample Questions to Ask During Activity
 What types of food do you eat at home?
 Do you know another name for this food?
 What should we name our recipe?
 How will the foods taste if we mix them?
 What would happen if we closed our eyes while we tasted?
 How many scoops will you serve?
 What are some things we have here you like to eat?
 Does the fruit taste different after being dried?
 If we put one scoop of each into your baggy, how many scoops will we have altogether?
