PHYSICS
WEEK 4 Forces WORKSHEET 1
1. Identify three differences between ‘mass’ and ‘weight’.
1
2. The value of 𝑔 at the surface of the moon is 6 of the value of the Earth’s surface. Taking the
latter to be 10𝑁𝑘𝑔−1 , calculate the weight of the astronaut of mass 72kg on
i) The Earth’s surface
ii) The Moon’s surface
3. Determine the mass of a football which has a weight of 0.80N on a planet where the
acceleration due to gravity is 2.0𝑚𝑠 −2 . What would be the football’s weight on Earth?

4. Two men are carrying a pole, each on his left shoulder. Choose the name(s) for the forces
described below:
i) The force acting downwards on each man’s shoulder
Weight Normal Reaction Friction Thrust

ii) The force acting upwards on the pole at each man’s shoulder
Weight Normal Reaction Friction Thrust

5. The gravitation field strength on the earth’s surface, g, is taken as 10𝑁𝑘𝑔−1 , and on the
𝑔
moon’s surface as 6 . What mass will have a weight of 6N on the moon?
6. A bar magnet is supported in a vertical position by a short length of thread, AB, and an
elastic band, BC, with its lower end resting on a horizontal table as show below. Name and
label each type of force acting on the magnet, indicating by an arrow the direction of each
force. C

WEEK 4: Forces ANSWER SHEET

WORKSHEET 1
1. Mass is measured in kilogram, while weight is measured in Newtons. Mass is measured
using a balance, while weight is calculated using a formula or found using a scale. Mass is
constant everywhere, while weight depends on the location. Mass is independent of weight,
while weight is dependent on mass and the value of acceleration due to gravity.
Any other reasonable difference is acceptable.

2. i) 720N ii) 120N

3. Mass = 0.4kg Weight on earth = 4N

4. i) Thrust ii) Normal reaction
