THE REPUBLIC OF

MALDIVES
“Global Embargo Against Myanmar”

Maldives officially the Republic of Maldives which has the national name Dhivehi Raajjeyge
Jumhooriyyaa an archipelago consisting of a collection of atolls (a coral island surrounding a lagoon) in the
Indian Ocean, Maldives is a small island nation in the Indian Subcontinent located in the Indian Ocean. It is
located in the southwest of Sri Lanka and India, about 700 kilometers from the mainland of the Asian
continent. The capital city of the Maldives is Male, Maldives is labeled as the smallest muslim country in the
world and only has an area of 300 km²
On November 8th, 2020 the Myanmar government held elections for the National League Party or NLD
led by Aung San Suu Kyi and the Tatmadaw Union Solidarity and Development Party or USDP, with the
result that the NLD won 86% of the seats and the USDP only 6% of it. Tatmadaw initiates unsubstantiated
claim of rigged election results according to ALTSEAN-BURMA Tatmadaw has directed tanks and armored
vehicles. Then on February 1st, the Tatmadaw staged a coup d'etat in Naypyidaw, and illegally detained Aung
San Suu Kyii and President Win Myint, and other leaders of the NLD party. Commander-in-Chief Min Aung
Hlaing, declares himself leader of Burma. On 9 February police shot a resident named Mya Thwe Thwe
Khaing in the head at the Naypyidaw demonstration and the secret trial of Suu Kyi and President Win Myint
was held without a defense attorney present. On 28 February 18 demonstrators were killed in the Tatmadaw
and on 4 March the United Nations announced 38 people had died in protests.

UN General Assembly Condemns Myanmar Coup and Urges Arms Embargo. After voting, the UN
General Assembly passed a resolution condemning Myanmar's military coup and calling for an arms embargo
on the Tatmadaw, The United Nations has also called for the release of political prisoners, such as elected
leader Aung San Suu Kyi, and an end to violence against peaceful protesters. While not legally binding, the
UN General Assembly resolutions are politically significant In addition, the General Assembly also called for
an arms embargo on Myanmar to reduce the risk of civil war. The UN General Assembly also urged the
Tatmadaw, as Myanmar's military is known, to respect the results of the November 2020 general election and
release all political prisoners, including the leader of the National League for Democracy (NLD) Party, Aung
San Suu Kyi. The resolution was supported by 119 countries and a total of 36 other countries abstained
including Russia and China, Myanmar's 2nd largest military arms supplier.

The Maldives have joined the international community in condemning the military coup on February 1,
2021 in Myanmar, noting that the death toll is rising as a result of the Military Junta. We reiterate our call to
stop the unlawful detention of civilian government leaders and unarmed protesters and to uphold their
democratic rights enshrined in Myanmar's constitution. We call on the military junta to respect the principles
of human rights and international humanitarian law and to end the state of emergency imposed after the coup.
The Maldives remains in solidarity with the people of Myanmar in their efforts to realize their democratic
aspirations which are inherently linked to peace and liberty

In 1988 the Maldives also experienced a coup led by businessman Abdullah Luthufi and assisted by
mercenaries from the Tamil separatist organization from Sri Lanka, the Tamil Eelam People's Liberation
Organization (PLOTE), to overthrow the government in the island republic of the Maldives. in this case the
Maldives carried out 'Operation Cactus', the Maldives also asked for help from Sri Lanka, Pakistan and
Afghanistan but they refused on the grounds of lack of military capability, the Maldives also contacted the
United States but the American military took 2-3 days to arrive at the military base closest in Diego Garcia and
finally the British who suggested seeking help from the Indian military. India swiftly arranged a meeting in
New Delhi and within 16 hours India was ready to carry out the operation, therefore India intervened in
'Operation Cactus'. President Gayoom was rescued and the Indian military managed to return control of the
government capital to President Gayoom within hours. some soldiers managed to escape to Sri Lanka on
hijacked cargo ships and some who could not escape were captured and imprisoned for life under Indian
pressure.

By the state above we can give a conclusion that 1. We can our voices to help solve the problems that are
happening in Myanmar by sending the
military to help condense the riots in the Myanmar coup.

2. See how the conditions are and conduct re-voting with

representatives of the opposite party to ensure that there is no cheating.

3. If the termination of the coup and the emergency status that

occurs immediately, we secure all citizens and of course the party causing the chaos is also in court and given
severe punishment for inhumanity and is not responsible for the deaths of the victims who died due to military
activities.

We certainly hope that the stop of the coup and the state of emergency carried out by the Myanmar
military will occur as soon as possible, and expect clarity and responsibility that must be given by the parties
concerned. And also justice for the community as well as the victims or families of the affected victims. And
the authorities must also investigate and straighten out all the problems that are happening in Myanmar right
now. And so as not to influence or adversely affect other countries.
