INTRODUCTION TO TRIGONOMETRY

1 In ΔABC right angled at B, if tan A = √ , find the values of:

i) sin A cos C + cos A sin C
ii) cos A cos C – sin A sin C

In the given figure find tan A – cot C

3 If ∠A and ∠B are acute angles such that cos A = cos B, then show that ∠A = ∠B

4 Prove the following:

2(cos4 60o + sin4 30o) – (tan2 60o + cot2 45o) + 3 sec2 30o =

5 For a right angled triangle, prove:

sin2 θ + cos2 θ = 1

6 For a right angled triangle, prove:

1 + tan2 θ = sec2 θ

7 For a right angled triangle, prove:

1 + cot2 θ = cosec2 θ

8 Show that (1 + tan A tan B)2 + (tan A – tan B)2 = sec2 A sec2 B

9 Prove that: + = sec θ.cosec θ + cot θ

10 Find the value of θ in the following:

+ =4

Prove the following: + = 2 sec θ

15 Show that: + =1

16 Write the other trigonometric ratios in terms of sec A

17 If 3 cot A = 4, then check whether = cos2 A – sin2 A or not.

18 If cos θ + sin θ = √2 cos θ, show that cos θ – sin θ = √2 sin θ

19 If sin θ + cos θ = √3, then prove that tan θ + cot θ = 1

HINTS

1 For ∠A, we have perpendicular and base. We need to calculate the hypotenuse using
the Pythagoras property.
Then we can calculate the t-ratios for ∠𝐴 and ∠𝐶
Put the values to find out the answers

2 Find AC by Pythagoras property

Then find the values of tan A and cot C

3 Consider 2 triangles PQA and RSB

cos A = cos B (given)
Prove similarity for both the triangles, to get the result

4 Put the values of all the trigonometric ratios

5 Consider a right angled triangle. Find out the values of sin θ and cos θ in terms of the
sides. Put the values in the LHS.

6 Consider a right angled triangle. Find out the values of tan θ and sec θ in terms of the
sides. Put the values in the LHS.

7 Consider a right angled triangle. Find out the values of cot θ and cosec θ in terms of
the sides. Put the values in the LHS.

8 Use the identity (a + b)2 and (a – b)2 on the LHS

16 Consider a right angled triangle ABC with ∠B = 90o
Find out the value of sec A by Hyp/Base
Consider the sides in the form of sec A

17 From the given value of cot A, find the other trigonometric ratios and then check for
the possibility.

18 Square both the sides of the given equation

19 Convert tan θ and cot θ into sin θ and cos θ

Then take LCM and proceed
