Surfing
Surfing
- Surfing's origins can be traced back to premodern the Hawaiian Islands and Polynesia, where
the sport was practiced by men and women from all social classes, from royals to
commoners.
- The skills of Hawaiian surfers were praised by early European explorers and travelers,
however 19th-century missionaries sent to the islands opposed of the "constant
intermingling, with no any limitation, between individuals of both sexes" and banned the
pastime. Surfing was only practiced occasionally in Hawaii by the end of the nineteenth
century.
