PROSE
It is a form of literature that follows a
PROSE normal progression of conversation and
syntax. In other terms it is simple,
straightforward and can either be serious
or funny. While prose is common and easy
to find in literature, there are several
categories into which prose can fall.
Types of Prose:

Death" is a short story by
American writer Edgar
Allan Poe, first published in
1842. The story follows
Prince Prospero's attempts
to avoid a dangerous
plague, known as the Red
Death, by hiding in his
abbey.

In an interview with Collins, it was
noted that the novel "tackles issues

among others." The novel deals with
the struggle for survival that the

POETRY
Poetry is a type of literature that conveys a thought,
describes a scene or tells a story in a concentrated,
lyrical arrangement of words. Poems can be structured,
with rhyming lines and meter, the rhythm and emphasis
of a line based on syllabic beats. Poems can also be
freeform, which follows no formal structure.

The well-known type of poetry are the


blank verse, free verse, and rhymed poetry.

Lyric Poetry
Ode Each stanza has ten lines each, and an ode is
usually written with between three and five stanzas.

Sonnet A poem of 14 lines that reflects upon a single issue


or idea.

Ballad Ballads are typically composed of four-line stanzas


that follow an ABCB rhyme scheme.
The book is divided into five sections, each ending

Epic An epic poem is a long, narrative poem that is
usually about heroic deeds and events that are
significant to the culture of the poet.
Elegies Written in quatrains in iambic pentameter
Short Poetry with an ABAB rhyme scheme.
Haiku Consists of three lines, with five syllables in
the first line, seven in the second, and five in
the third.
Limerick A limerick is a short, five-line poem with just
Dramatic one stanza.

DRAMA
A drama is the portrayal of fictional or
non-fictional events through the
performance of written dialog (either
prose or poetry). Dramas can be
performed on stage, on film, or the radio.
It was purposely written in a fashion that
makes the spectators anticipate the
outcome of the story.

COMEDY
Comedy is a genre of drama that has the purpose
to amuse and entertain. Comedies typically involve
misunderstandings that lead to funny situations.
Most comedies also incorporate romance and end
happily with a marriage.

TRAGEDY
A tragedy is a narrative that shows the downfall of
a protagonist and does not have a happy ending.
Tragedies used to focus on royalty or great heroes,
but today can focus on ordinary people.
OPERA
A staged drama set to music in its entirety, made up
of vocal pieces with instrumental accompaniment and
usually with orchestral overtures and interludes. An
opera is essentially a play in which all the actors' lines
are sung instead of spoken.

MUSICAL
Musical theatre is a form of theatrical performance that
combines songs, spoken dialogue, acting and dance.
Since the early 20th century, musical theatre stage
works have generally been called, simply, musicals.

MELODRAMA
A work with exaggerated, sensational events and
characters. It is highly emotional, focusing on exciting
but over-the-top situations that are designed to
encourage emotional responses in the audience.

FARCE
Farce is generally regarded as intellectually and
aesthetically inferior to comedy in its crude
characterizations and implausible plots, but it has been
sustained by its popularity in performance and has
persisted throughout the Western world to the present.
DOCUDRAMA
Is a combination of the elements of both drama as
well as a documentary. Docudrama is actually a
dramatic representation of real-life events. This genre
allows the creation of staged situations that portray a
historical event, while sticking to the facts.

Summary
Prose is a form of literature that goes with the flow
of a normal conversation. While, Poetry commonly
have a metrical structure and rhyme, all the while
describing a scene or story. Drama however is the
specific mode of fiction/non-fiction represented in
theatres, or on radio or television. In other words,
no matter what genre or classification of literature
is available, it is better to read the text of what
you're interested in.
