Grundfos Hydro Multi-E
Introduction
As the demand for improved energy efficiency pressure boosting systems has continued
so too has the engineered sophistication of the Grundfos pump solutions to meet this
requirement.
Grundfos have continued to invest in extending the technology behind their multi pump
pressure boosting systems, new extended functionality permanent magnet motor technology
and have now introduced a new range of Grundfos Hydro Multi-E booster systems that have
been specifically designed to meet the demand for variable speed multi master pressure
boosting applications.
Applications
There are a wide variety of applications the Hydro Multi- E booster systems* have been
designed to meet, these include:
• Offices
• Schools
• Restaurants
• Hotels
• Residential homes/ smaller apartment complexes
• Leisure facilities
• Hospitals
• Various industrial applications
N.B. Sets are suitable for use in both new and retrofit applications.
* Grundfos offers of a wide range of additional 1 to 6 pump booster sets. Please contact Grundfos for further information
Scope
Grundfos Hydro Multi-E booster systems consist of two to four Grundfos CRE/ CRIE vertical
multi-stage pumps or two or three CME horizantal multi-stage pumps connected in parallel and
mounted on a common base provided with all necessary fittings. As standard, the Hydro Multi-E
is supplied with the following:
• base frame
• pumps
• suction and discharge manifolds
• pressure switch as dry-running protection
• one or two discharge-pressure sensors, depending on pump size
• non-return valves, one per pump
• isolating valves, two per pump
• pressure gauge
• diaphragm tank
• breaker box
• WRAS approved materials
On delivery, the Grundfos Hydro Multi-E booster system is factory-tested and ready for operation.
Features
• low energy consumption
• simple to install and operate
• “Plug ‘n Pump” philosophy for easy set up and operation
• multi master function
• simple to maintain
• reliable Grundfos pumps fitted as standard
• automatically adapts to system conditions
• Field-Bus connectivity with E version i.e. BACnet, Modbus, Profibus, LON
• factory tested and ready to use
• full redundancy with no single point of failure
• compatible with the Grundfos GO, remote controller
Constant Pressure
By continuously adapting the speed of the pumps to the flow demand, the required
pressure is kept constant despite fluctuations in flow. This ensures the consumer the
best water supply at any time of the day. Starting and stopping the speed controlled
pumps are done in a manner that minimizes pressure surges and protects piping –
the days of water hammer are over…
High Efficiency
The new Hydro Multi-E range with the advanced MGE SaVer motor enables an over-all
efficiency higher than the IE4 level defined by IEC 60034-31. The applicable range, even
incorporating frequency converters, still delivers efficiencies above the standard, which
only applies to the efficiency of the motors. Using the pump curve data to determine
the most efficient speed and the required number of pumps, the energy consumption is
continuously optimised.

Grundfos Hydro Multi-E
Technical overview
The Grundfos Hydro Multi-E is a compact pressure boosting system that has been specifically
engineered for building services and industrial applications. The Hydro Multi-E has been
designed to be easily installed and self-managing with minimum interaction with installers/
users.
A variable speed system coupled with various innovative options is offered to enable the
customer to choose the right solution for their specific application. Being able to select dual or
multi pump variables also increases the number of options available. Within this wide and well
structured range the Hydro Multi-E family is able to cover the demands of various applications.
Furthermore Hydro Multi-E systems can be configured to be duty standby or in a cascade mode
with as many standby pumps as required.
From 0.37kW up to 2.2kW new permanent magnet motor technology with advanced functions
is utilised. Larger sized motors, from 3.0kW to 7.5kW are common AC motors run by frequency
converters that provide the standard funtionality with its proven reliability.
The Hydro Multi-E with pumps in this range offers additional functions:
• multi-master function
• pipe-filling function
• pre-defined setpoint
• external setpoint influence
• limit-exceeded function

1) Motor [kW] is the power per pump.
2) Max. IN [A] applies to the current for the specific Hydro Multi-E at a specific voltage (230 or 400 V).
3) Max. I0 [A] applies to single-phase MGE motors. The value of max. I0 [A] never exceeds the value of max. IN [A].

System requirements
Mechanical installation
A Hydro Multi-E booster system must be installed in a well-ventilated room to ensure sufficient cooling of the
pumps. Hydro Multi-E is not suitable for outdoor installation.
Place the booster system in such a way that there is sufficient clearance around it for the operator to be
able to work freely.
Where units are to be used in a noise sensitive area, an acoustic enclosure should be used.
Pipework
The pipes connected to the booster system must be of adequate size. Fit expansion joints in the suction and
discharge manifolds to avoid resonance. The pipes are to be connected to the suction and discharge
manifolds.
The booster system should be tightened up prior to start up. Grundfos recommends fitting pipe supports both on the
suction and the discharge side.
The booster system should be positioned on an even and solid surface, for example a concrete floor or foundation. If
the booster system is not fitted with vibration dampers, it must be bolted to the floor or foundation.
Grundfos advises that an anti-surge valve (part number: 98057487) is added to each riser pipe to work with the booster
set in the event of a power failure. This will help eliminate the risk of pipework / fitting damage due to system vacuum
collapse situations.
Electrical installation
The electrical connection and protection should be carried out in accordance with local regulations.
•The Hydro Multi-E must be correctly earthed.
Note: 4.0 to 5.5 kW motors must be connected to especially reliable/sturdy earth connections due to an earth leakage
current above 3.5 mA.
•The pumps require no external motor protection. The motors incorporate thermal protection against slow
overloading and blocking (IEC 34-11: TP 211).
•When the pumps are switched on via the power supply, they will start after approx. 5 seconds.
Note: The number of starts and stops via the power supply must not exceed four times per hour.
If the system is supplied with a breaker box for wall mounting, the cabinet must be mounted in accordance with local
regulations.

Operating Conditions
General recommendations
Cold water supply systems Water quality should be maintained to current industry standards. Systems
should be flushed to remove solids.
Ambient conditions
Ambient temperature during
operation 0.37kW to 2.2kW 0°C to +50°C
3.0 kW to 7.5 kW 0°C to +40°C
Ambient temperature during
storage and transport 0°C to +40°C
Relative air humidity Maximum 95%
Maximum operating pressure
See pump performance curves
pb = Barometric pressure in bar.(Barometric pressure can be set to 1 bar.) In closed systems, pb indicates the system
pressure in bar.
NPSH = Net Positive Suction Head in metres head. The NPSH value can be read from the NPSH
curve at the highest flow which the individual pump will be delivering.
Hf = Friction loss in suction manifold in metres head at the highest flow of the individual pump.
Hv = Vapour pressure in metres head.
Hs = Safety margin of min. 0.5 metres head.
