PRIMARY SOURCES IN PHILIPPINE HISTORY

Learning Objectives:

a) To familiarize oneself with the primary documents in different


historical documents in different historical periods of the Philippine.
b) To learn history through primary sources.
c) To properly interpret primary sources through examining the
content and context of the document.
d) To understand the context behind each selected documents.

In this chapter we are going to look of primary sources for different


historical periods and evaluate these documents and content in terms of
historical value and examine the context of their production.

These primary sources range from chronicles, official documents,


speeches and cartoons to visual arts.

Needles to say, different types of sources necessities, different kinds


of analysis and contain different levels of importance.

The primary sources that we are going to examine:


1. Antonio Pigafetta’s first voyage around the world.
2. Emilio Jacinto’s Kartilya ng katipunan.
3. The 1898 declaration of Philippine independence
4. Political cartoons Alfred Mccey’s Philippine cartoons; political
caricature of the American Era (1900-1941)
5. And Corazon Aquino’s speech before the U.S Congress.

First Voyage Around The World by Magellan by Antonio Pigafetta.


This book is from 16 centuries, these Italian traveler are called
navigators and one of them is Antonio Pigafetta. This book made by
Antonio Pigafetta is classic.

2) Michel de Montaigne
3) Giambattista Vico

A brief summary of the First Voyage Around the world by Magellan by


Antonio Pigafetta.

Pigafetta’s Travelogue is one of the most important primary sources


in the study of the pre colonial Philippines. His account was also a major
referent to the events leading to Magellan’s arrival in the Philippines, his
encounter with local leaders his death in the hands of lapu lapu’s forces
in the battle of Mac tan and in the departure of what was left of
Magellan’s fleet from the islands.
