1. OBJECTIVE

This procedure aims to practice proper waste segregation and disposal for laboratory generated
wastes to minimize exposure to hazards so as to avoid mishandling and risks imposed for safety
based on the requirements mandated by the DENR and Environmental Policies.

2. SCOPE

This procedure covers all wastes generated in the laboratory including samples taken for analysis.
This also includes materials used during sampling, contaminated rags and used gloves, and used
sampling containers.

3. DEFINITION OF TERMS

3.1 Waste - anything considered to be useless, abandoned and released or disposed to the
environment.

3.2 Hazard - risk or situation which poses a level of threat to life, property or environment.

3.3 Waste Segregation Categories;

3.3.1 Biodegradable Wastes - wastes identified to deteriorate naturally in the environment due to
exposure to the different atmospheric reactions.

3.3.2 Non-Biodegradable Wastes - wastes considered accumulating in time and would take
hundreds of years before it would decompose unless acted upon by chemical reactions.

3.3.3 Contaminated Wastes - wastes considered having contacts to any hazard

and are classified according to DENR-EMB Classification of Hazardous
Wastes.

3.3.4 Acid Wastes - liquid wastes with pH below 7.00

3.3.5 Basic Wastes - liquid wastes with pH above 7.00

3.3.6 Solvent wastes – wastes that are organic in nature that could be
halogenated or non-halogented.

4. RESPONSIBLE AUTHORITIES

4.2.2 Shall check the waste generation logbook for laboratory if proper recording and
monitoring is conducted.

4.2.3 Shall conduct necessary test/analysis for each type of waste prior disposal and record
results in analysis logbooks.

7.1 All materials or substances considered as wastes shall be disposed or temporarily placed in
their respective containers.

7.2 Waste segregation shall be done according to the nature and characteristics of the
substance and shall be conducted as often as needed to avoid fill up of wastes and that proper
treatment will be done accordingly.

7.3 Hazard Categorization analysis shall be conducted to identify its nature and characteristics.

7.4 Waste Management Logbook shall be provided to record the date of disposal and the amount
of waste generated in compliance to the Waste Management Procedures and DENR-EMB
coding for Hazardous wastes.
