SECTION 1
OVERVIEW
The proper installation of the radar equipment is critical in ensuing its effective and reliable performance as
well as facilitating maintenance and repair. Therefore, carefully install the radar equipment by following the
procedures below:

1) Install the scanner as high as possible while taking the scanner's weight into consideration.

2) It is preferable to install the display unit in the wheel house to facilitate observations.

3) Available cable lengths for installing the radar JMA-5200 are as shown in the table below. Request an
appropriate cable from JRC beforehand. A cable longer than the sufficient length may degrade radar
performance, so give it careful consideration when planning the installation.

Code No. Cable length (number of cores)

CFQ6912-10 10 m (19 cores)
CFQ6912-15 15 m (19 cores)
CFQ6912-20 20 m (19 cores)
CFQ6912-30 30 m (19 cores)
CFQ6912-40 40 m (19 cores)
CFQ6912-50 50 m (19 cores)
CFQ6912-65 65 m (19 cores)

2.4 CONNECTING THE INSTALLATION CABLE
(NKE-2252) ............................................................ 2-7
2.1 SELECTING THE INSTALLATION
POSITION
Select the scanner installation position by taking into consideration the following:

1) Determine how high the scanner can be installed on the hull by taking the scanner's weight into
consideration.

2) The scanner installation height has a direct relation to the maximum detectable range. The higher the
scanner is located, the wider the detectable range becomes. However, if it is too high, at positions higher
than the vertical beam width (-3 dB point), the energy of radio waves significantly attenuates, thus making
it difficult to acquire a target located at close range. Additionally, the scanner is greatly affected by sea
clutter. Therefore, install the scanner according to its weight, maximum cable length and maintenance.
For relationships between the scanner installation height and the maximum detectable range, refer to
"Radar Wave with the Horizon" in section 6.1 of the instruction manual.

3) If the width of the radiation beam in the vertical direction is set at 2θ degrees (i.e. most radiation energy
centralizes within this angle), the energy of radio waves is very weak in directions beyond 2θ degrees. If
a scanner position is too high, it is difficult to acquire a small target located at close range. Yet, if the
scanner's position is low, it is difficult to acquire a distant target, and the ship's mast, derrick, and chimney
obstruct radiation beams, thereby reducing the radar's effective range. Generally, the lowest position for
installing a scanner is considered to be the AB line in Fig.2.1. In the radar JMA-5310/5320, 2θ is 20
degrees. A scanner position is usually determined at a high enough level so that the chimney and the
shrine-gate type mast are out of the range where radiation beams are radiated.

JMA-5310/20: θ=10°

Fig.2.1 Lowest scanner installation position

2─1
2.1 SELECTING THE INSTALLATION POSITION yy

4) A scanner's plane position is generally determined so that the shadow of the radio wave due to the mast
does not overlap with the fore-and-aft line. If there is no large obstacle ahead, the scanner is usually
installed on the fore-and-aft line on the wheel house.

5) Avoid the installation of a bearing finder VHF antenna near the scanner, because this causes noise in the
radio equipment and a trouble with radiated radio waves.

6) If the scanner's radiation plane is contaminated by smoke and soot from the chimney, the radar's
performance will decrease. Therefore, consider ease of maintenance when determining the scanner's
2
position and the structure of the mast and the tower.

7) If the halyard for the signal flag is located in the vicinity of the scanner, wind may cause the flag or halyard
to wind around the scanner's radiator, resulting in failures. So, carefully consider the location before
installing the scanner.

8) Since the derrick post has a great amount of vibration, it is not suitable as a location for the scanner
installation.

9) Taking into consideration the swing circle (d), keep a sufficient distance between the scanner and other
installed object (e.g. mast or radio antenna) so that there is d/2 + 200 mm or more from the scanner's
rotation center.
The swing circle of the scanner for the radar JMA-5200 is as shown in Table.2.

2.2 INSTALLATION PROCEDURE
1) Trestle
Install the trestle by referring to the outside drawing of the scanner (Figs 1, 2, 3 and 4). Install it such that
the bottom surface of the scanner is parallel to the water surface and the cable grand is oriented toward the
stern. If installation height does not seem to be sufficient when the scanner is directly installed on the
roof of the wheel house, install the trestle or the radar mast. Usually, when the scanner installation height
is 2 meters or less above the roof of the wheel house, install the trestle assembled with angle joints.
When the scanner installation height is more than 2 meters above the roof of the wheel house, install the
cylindrical radar mast. Mount the proper footing to the trestle and the radar mast, considering
convenience of installation, maintenance, adjustment and repair of the scanner (see Fig. 2.2).

Trestle height Trestle height

2) How to hoist the scanner

Apply felt to the location around which the hoisting rope is wound and then hoist the scanner according to
the procedures shown in Fig.2.3. If the location around which the hoisting rope is wound is not protected
with felt or if the scanner is hoisted at locations near both ends of the radiator, the scanner may be damaged.
So, pay careful attention to protecting the scanner.

3) Paint
After having installed the scanner, apply sufficient paint to the cabinet mounting legs, mounting bolts and
nuts to prevent rust.

4) Magnetism
The scanner contains highly magnetic magnetron. Therefore, install the scanner 3 meters or more from
navigation instruments, such as magnetic compass and chronometer.

cables on the - side of the
ship's power supply, and
the shielding cable in the
hull's earth.

3─8
When you directly connect with the ship's power supply without using the optional
rectifier, measure the voltage between the hull's earth and the positive side of ship's
power spply, and the hull's earth and the negative side of this. And check voltage of
50 volts or more is not required.
If voltage of 50 volts or more is required, take the measures which do not require 50
volts or more between the above mentioned terminals.
Connection without taking the measures causes system failure or accident.

Inset cable CFQ-6911-5 into

processing unit J1.

Caution
● Incorrect connection between the ship's power supply or the rectifier
and the power cable may cause an equipment failure.

3─9
3.5 INSTALLATION OF THE POWER CABLE (CFQ-6911) y yy

Selecting a cable when a long power cable is required

● The input voltage to an indicator is determined by subtracting the voltage drop up

to the power cable from the ship's power supply voltage.
Therefore, if the power cable is too thin or too long, the voltage drops substantially,
preventing the radar from functioning at its full capacity. Use the following
guideline for selecting a power cable.

3
(a) Take the voltage fluctuation rate into consideration when determining a
voltage (Vs) value of the ship's power supply.
(b) Use the following formula for calculating a voltage drop (V).
V=2LRKI
L : Cable length
R : Direct current resistance at 20˚C (Ω/m)
K : Conductor resistance temperature counting (=1.22)
I : Maximum peak current (A)
(c) Various cable direct current resistances (R) and allowable current (Imax)

Cable type R (20°C) Imax

(45°C continuously)
CVVS2 x 1.25 16.7 Ω/km 13A
CVVS2 x 2.0 9.42 Ω/km 19A
CVVS2 x 3.5 5.30 Ω/km 26A

Provide a sufficient extra current value to Imax when selecting cables.

3.21 CONNECTING TO EXTERNAL
BUZZERS
This equipment is equipped with dry contact output for external buzzers.
Dry contact is output from a jumper set between pins 6 and 7 from the 8-pin connector of J5. The
contact of the output is a capacity up to 1A/30V.
If a greater current/voltage is applied, install equipment of adequate contact capacity such as relay in
the external section.

If the current/voltage exceeds the contact capacity, the contact of this equipment becomes fused and
the external buzzer keeps ringing, causing an extremely dangerous situation.

Pin 6 of P5 is one side of the

dry contact output

1) Output for sub display unit

The slave output includes the following signals:

- Video signal (50 ohm termination)

- Trigger signal (1 kilo-ohm termination)
- Rotation signal (open collector output)

- Video signal
Connect the video signal line to the following terminals located on the terminal board:

J9-1 EVDO
J9-2 EVDOE (return)

The video signal is a negative signal and the wave form is as follows:
3
2V

- Trigger signal
Connect the trigger signal line to the following terminals located on the terminal board:

J9-4 ETRGO (TTL output)

J9-7 ETRGOE (return)

The trigger signal is a positive signal and it takes approximately 6m seconds from the startup to the video
signal.

4V

• Rotation signal
Connect the rotation signal line to the following terminals located on the terminal board:

J9-5 EBPO
J9-7 ETRG0E (return)

Connect the rotation reference signal line to the following terminals located on the terminal board:

J9-6 EBZO
J9-7 ETRG0E (return)

Pull up both lines to 5 V at 1 kilo-ohm before using them.

BP
2048 pulses per
cycle

BZ
1 pulse per cycle

The radar JMA-5200 can output only a one-phase rotation signal.

When a sub display unit needs a two-phase rotation signal, the one-phase input should be normally
set to logic "H" or "L".

3─52
2) When used as a slave display unit
The slave input includes the following signals:

Video input (50 ohm termination)

Trigger signal input (1 kilo-ohm termination: TTL input)
Rotation signal

• Video signal
Connect the video signal input line to the terminal located on the terminal board as follows:

J9-8 EVDI
J9-9 EVDIE

• Trigger signal
Connect the trigger signal input line to the terminal located on the terminal board as follows:

J9-10 ETRGI
J9-14 ETRGIE
• Rotation signal input (already pulled up at 470 ohm)
Connect the rotation signal line to the following terminals located on the terminal board:

J9-12 EBPI
J9-14 ETRGIE

Since the radar JMA-5300 does not detect the rotation direction, only one type of encoder input, BP,
is necessary.

Connect the rotation reference signal line to the following terminals located on the terminal board:

J9-13 EBZI
J9-14 ETRGIE

Both signal lines have been pulled up at 470 ohm, therefore, an open collector can be connected on
the output side.

SECTION 5
MEASURES AGAINST NOISE
INTERFERENCE IN THE RADIO EQUIPMENT

5.1 SHIELDS OF DEVICES .............................. 5-1

5.2 INTER-UNIT CABLES ................................. 5-1
5.3 INSTALLATION LOCATION ........................ 5-1
5.4 GROUNDING .............................................. 5-1
Radar equipment adopt a variety of pulse circuits. Those circuits or inter-unit cables emit higher harmonic
components of the pulse wave as electromagnetic waves, and those components affect the radio communication
equipment's receiving antenna and cables, resulting in receiver noise. The following general procedures are
effective in preventing noise interference:

5.1 SHIELDS OF DEVICES

The components on the radar have springs or other fittings attached at spots required for shielding them. This
spring needs to have sufficient electrical contact to prevent each device from emitting noise. Pay careful
attention during installation.
Make sure that screws for the device cover, door, etc. are tightly fastened.

5.2 INTER-UNIT CABLES

Be sure to use designated cable between the units.
Pay careful attention to cable connections and the treating condition of cable ends (especially, shield
meshwork).

5.3 INSTALLATION LOCATION

Although devices have been sufficiently shielded, the shielding of some may not be perfect. For example, the
display unit's LCD panel surface and the processing unit's fuse holder emit a slight amount of noise.
Therefore, do not position receiving equipment's scanner cable near those devices. Furthermore, a shielded
cable might cause noise, so, do not route such a cable in parallel with a scanner cable.

5.4 GROUNDING
Although situations change according to the hull structure and the positional relationships between radio
equipment and radar equipment, the procedures below may not be entirely effective. But, ground each device
to the closest ground location on the hull, and also, ground the concerned radio equipment to the closest ground
location.

5─1
SECTION 6
INSPECTION AFTER INSTALLATION

6.1 INSPECTION AFTER INSTALLATION ...........6-1

6.2 OPERATION INSPECTION............................6-1
6.1 INSPECTION AFTER INSTALLATION
After installation has been completed, it is necessary to inspect whether all of the procedures have been done
properly. Specifically, inspect whether cable connections are correct, each device has been mounted securely,
water has not leaked onto the scanner (fastening of cable grand, cover, etc.), and whether the cable's shield
meshwork has been properly installed.

6.2 OPERATION INSPECTION

After confirming that the equipment has been properly installed, carefully read the instruction manual and be
fully aware of the operation procedures before inspecting radar operations. Make sure that the ship's mains'
voltage is within the allowable range and then operate the radar according to the instruction manual. Then,
make sure that there are no abnormalities, and operate all of the functions to check that they operate normally.

If, for some reason, the monitor, PCB, or unit needs to be replaced, refer to the attached procedures for
removing those devices. After the replacement has been completed, make sure that screws have been tightly
fastened and all of the connectors have been connected, and then turn on the power and conduct inspection.
