INTRODUCTION

• SHADHA has begun to start work on elevated platforms in “NAJRAN SALES DEPOT

EXPANSION” Project. As per Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) In

2020, 4764 workers died on the job. Majority of the fatality was from elevated work

environment. Without proper communication of control measures and training we

cannot control the hazards. The WORK AT HEIGHT TRAINING intends make the

employees involved in the work aware about hazards, risk perception, control

measures and emergency response.

WORK AT HEIGHT

What is WORK AT HEIGHT ?

"Work at height" refers to any activity that takes place in a location where a person could fall, causing

injury. This includes working above ground level or near an edge, an opening, or a surface where a

person could fall. Examples of work at height situations include tasks performed on ladders,

scaffolding, roofs, and platforms. Proper safety measures, equipment and training are crucial to

prevent falls and ensure the well-being of individuals engaged in work at height activities.
HAZARDS ASSOCIATED WITH WORK AT HEIGHT

Work at height comes with number of hazards such as;

❖ Falling of Persons: This is the most significant hazard associated with work at height. Falling of
persons from elevated positions can lead to severe injuries or fatalities.

❖ Falling of Objects: Falling of objects can cause injuries to persons who are working near to or
passing by scaffold, ladder or Mobile Elevated Working Platforms.

❖ Scaffold Collapse : Scaffold could be collapsed if the erection is not proper. Scaffold collapse may
occur due to uneven surface, lack of supports, poor design, substandard components etc. It can result
in multiple injuries or fatalities.

❖ Collision with Moving Equipment: Whatever the elevated platform it is, if it has collided with moving
equipment it will result in work at height injuries.
TYPES OF ELEVATED WORKING PLATFORM

There are 3 types of elevated working platforms we are relying on,

1- LADDER : Ladders are usually used for the maintenance activities, access and other short-term
activities. Ladders are not meant for prolonged use due to the likelihood of getting injured. There are
variety of ladders like step ladder, extendable, single ladder, a frame ladder, monkey ladder, emergency
ladder, rope ladder etc.
TYPES OF ELEVATED WORKING PLATFORM

2- SCAFFOLD : Scaffold is a temporary elevated working platform used to do work at height activities. It
is also used as a structure supporting mean. There are different kind of scaffolds such as single scaffold,
double scaffold, tubes and clamps scaffold, cups and locks scaffold, mobile scaffold, cantilever scaffold,
hanging scaffold, aluminum scaffold etc.
TYPES OF ELEVATED WORKING PLATFORM

3- MOBILE ELEVATED WORKING PLATFORM (MEWP) : Mobile Elevated Working Platform (MWEP) is
a mobile machine used to move persons to working positions where they are carrying out work from the
ground or work platform. There are different kind of MEWP such as boom lift, manlift, scissor lift, man
basket, cherry picker etc.
GUARD RAIL SYSTEM AND TOE BOARDS

Scaffold is the elevated platform SHADHA is currently using for “Najran Sales Depot Expansion Project”. For the
casting of tie beams, columns, electrical works, mechanical works and masonry works appropriate mobile
scaffolds, cup-lock scaffold and tubes scaffold will be used.
Guard Rails and Toe boards are mandatory requirement for scaffolds. Both possess the objectives such as
preventing falling of persons and falling of objects.
The purpose of toe boards are to prevent falling objects, tools, and equipment from going over an edge of a
roof or platform. An unprotected edge poses a risk of falling material on those below. Toe boards also help
protect workers from falling off elevated walking-working surfaces.
Guard rails are temporary edge protection systems that are installed on scaffolding lifts to prevent falls. They
are required at both board lifts and working lifts during the construction of the scaffolding structure . The Work
at Height Regulations 2005 Schedule 2 provides guidance on the height requirements for guardrails in
construction work. The top guard-rail or other similar means of protection should be at least 950 millimeters or,
in the case of such means of protection already fixed at the coming into force of these Regulations, at least 910
millimeters above the edge from which any person is liable to fall
SCAFFOLD TAG SYSTEM

According to the worksite safety regulatory authorities, the scaffold must be inspected prior to being used.
So the scaffold tags are designed to ensure that all the concerned people are well aware of the current status
of the scaffolding structure.

The color yellow means “CAUTION” The red scaffolding tags means
The green tags for tagging “DANGER – UNSAFE FOR USE”. These
when it comes to tagging scaffolds.
scaffolds mean “SAFE FOR tags are used for scaffolding safety when
These will replace the green tags if a

requirements. If the scaffold could

SAFE SYSTEM OF WORK (SSOW) FOR SCAFFOLDING

• Isolate the scaffold erecting and working area using hard barricade and appropriate signage.
• Make sure only approved scaffold components are used and physically inspected prior to scaffold erection.

• Assign certified scaffolders for erection and dismantling and scaffold inspector to inspect the erected scaffold and
approve.
• Use checklist and tag scaffold using Scaff-tag (Green-Safe for use, Red- Do not use, Yellow- Caution).
• Ensure certified clamps, access ladder and boards are used for scaffold.
• Minimum of 101.6mm height toe board, 450mm-600mm from platform mid rail and 450mm-600mm from mid rail for
handrail need to be ensured.
• Scaffolds of 6m or more in height shall be guyed and securely fixed to a structure at least every 4m vertically and 6m
horizontally, Also bracings and outriggers need to be ensured.
• Mobile scaffolds shall be moved only by pushing or pulling at the base, and never moved with men or materials on the
platform.
• In addition to the relevant PPEs full body safety harness with double lanyard shall be provided for workers while working
in fall exposed environment.
