Exercise Sheet #12
Semester 1441

Problem (1)
An inductive load Z < 31.10 draws 12 kVA from a 120-V rms sinusoidal source.
Calculate:
(a) the average power delivered to the load,
(b) the peak current, and
(c) the elements of the load impedance.
Problem (2)
The parallel circuit in Fig. has a total average power of 1500 W. Find the power absorbed
by each resistor.

Problem (3)
In the circuit shown, the 60-W resistor absorbs an average power of 240 W. Find V
and the apparent power of each branch of the circuit. What is the overall apparent
power of the circuit?

Problem (4)
A single-phase inductive load draws 10 MW at 0.6 power-factor lagging.
Draw the power tringle and the reactive power of a capacitor to be connected
in parallel with the load to raise the power factor to 0.85.

Problem (5)
Three loads are connected in parallel across 1400-V rms, 60 Hz single-phase
supply as shown in Figure.
Load 1: Inductive load, 125 kVA at 0.28 power factor.
Load 2: Capacitive Load, 10 kW and 40 kVar.
Load 3: Resistive load of 15 kW.

a) Find the total kW, kVA, and the supply power factor.
b) A capacitive is connected in parallel with the above loads to improve
the power factor to 0.8 lagging. Determine the kVar rating of this
capacitor .
