Practice Paper
Read the following with your child:
This is a multiple-choice paper in which you have to mark your answer to each
question on the separate answer sheet. You should mark only one answer for
each question.
Draw a firm line clearly through the rectangle next to your answer like this:
If you make a mistake, rub it out as completely as you can and put in your new
answer.
There are four sections in this paper. Each section starts with an explanation of
what to do, followed by a worked example and two practice questions.
Solutions to the example and practice questions are provided
Be sure to keep your place in the correct section on the answer sheet. Mark
your answer in the box that has the same number as the question in the
booklet.
You may find some of the questions difficult. If you cannot do a question, do
not waste time on it but go on to the next. If you are not sure of an answer,
choose the one you think is best.
Work as quickly and as carefully as you can.

Look at the example question below. On the left, there are two figures that are alike.
On the right there are five more figures: one of these is most like the two figures on
the left and its letter has been marked on your answer sheet.

The two shapes on the left are alike in having the same number of circles as they
have lines. In both cases, all circles are black.

move clockwise around the corners. In both cases, the corner shapes have only one
line of symmetry.

across it.

Look at the example question below. On the left, there is a matrix which contains an
empty square. One of the five figures on the right should fill the empty square. Its letter
has been marked on your answer sheet.

In the example above, all of the large shapes are grey and all of the small shapes are
horizontally striped. Moving clockwise around the matrix, the small striped shape
becomes the large dotted shape in the next box. To complete the matrix, the empty
square needs to contain a large grey circle and a small horizontally-striped trapezium,
so the correct answer must be E.

In the matrix above, the black dots are positioned differently depending on which
column they are in. In the left-hand column they are positioned in the circle nearest to
the arrowhead, in the middle column they are positioned in the middle circle and in the
right-hand column they are positioned in the circle that is furthest from the arrowhead.
The missing image is in the left-hand column. Moreover, along each row and column,
each arrow points in a different direction to each other. The only arrow that is not seen
along the row/column of the empty box is an arrow pointing towards the bottom-left
corner.

contains a large shape on the left and a number of smaller shapes on the right, with the
smaller shapes having one less side than the large one. Moreover, the number of

To answer these questions you have to work out a code. On the left of the example
below are some shapes and the codes that go with them. You must decide how the
letters in the code go with the shapes. Then, find the correct code for the test shape
from the set of five codes on the right. Its letter has been marked on your answer
sheet.

Decide what the code letters mean. The first letter represents the total number of
arrowheads in the image. ‘J’ codes for two, ‘L’ codes for four and ‘K’ codes for three.
The second letter represents the position of the triangle within the arrow. ‘R’ codes
for ‘top’, ‘T’ codes for ‘left-hand side’ and ‘S’ codes for ‘right-hand side’. Therefore
the test shape must have an ‘L’ code for ‘four-headed arrow’ and a ‘S’ code for
‘right-hand side’. So the answer is LS.

For example, ‘H’ in the first image codes for ‘three’. The second letter represents the
type of shape in the image. ‘K’, for instance, codes for ‘circle’.

Parents’ Guide
About this test

This is a multiple-choice paper designed to familiarise your child with the types of questions
they will see in an 11 plus NVR exam.
There are 80 questions which gradually increase in difficulty. It covers topics including
matrices, match to a pair and find the odd one out.
What you’ll need

How to prepare
Your child should take the test at a time when they feel alert. Choose a quiet area where they
can work comfortably without distractions.
Talk with your child about the reasons for taking the practice test. Explain that this paper looks
similar to the one they will see in the real 11 plus exam. The questions and answer sheet will
help them know what to expect on exam day.
Explain that they might find some of the questions difficult, especially as they progress through
the paper. They should work as quickly and carefully as possible.
If they get stuck on a question, they should move on to the next one. If they have time left over
at the end, they can go back to any skipped questions. If they have more time left over, they
should check their answers.

Parents’ Guide
Taking the test

Dictionaries are not allowed. Give your child a scrap sheet of paper and encourage them to use
it for any rough working out.
Your child should mark their answers on the Answer Sheet, not in the test booklet. This is good
practice for the real exam which will have a separate answer sheet like this.
On the Answer Sheet, your child should record their answers by drawing a clear line through
the answer box with a pencil. Mistakes should be rubbed out and not crossed out. The real
exam is marked by a computer, so it would not be able to interpret a crossed-out answer.
Timing
It’s helpful for children to get comfortable with taking tests under timed conditions. You should
allow them 40 minutes to take the test. Only start timing when they have finished reading the
instructions.
If they haven’t finished the test after 40 minutes, circle the question they got to, then let them
carry on. When you mark the test you’ll be able to see how many questions they got right in 40
minutes and how many overall. This will show you whether your child needs to work on their
speed, accuracy, or both.
Marking
You can find the answers on the Answer Key. Give your child one mark for each correct answer
(no half-marks are available in the real test!). Do not take marks off for wrong answers.
Take time to discuss your child’s results in a positive and encouraging way. Work through the
corrections, what they would do differently next time, and pick out key areas to revise next.
