Project Summary

The EMQAL joint Master program is a pioneering project in the field of Quality in Analytical Laboratories.
Analytical laboratories play a crucial role in all aspects of modern society, and are called upon to provide
information that can serve as the basis for the taking of key decisions. As such, there is a growing need to assure
the quality and reliability of analytical laboratories world-wide. The objective of EMQAL is to prepare scientists
and administrators to implement and manage Laboratory Quality Systems. In socio-economic terms, EMQAL
builds capacity and trains students to fulfill the crucial role of providing sound, reliable analytical results. This has
an impact at all levels of society: in the field of health, the environment and the economy. The EMQAL consortium
consists of The Universities of Bergen (Norway), Barcelona (Spain), Algarve (Portugal), Cádiz (Spain) and
Gdansk University of Technology (Poland). The programme lasts for two years. The first year consists of a taught
course composed by stand-alone modules in the fields of quality management, analytical methods, data analysis
and professional skills. Most of the modules are fixed, but the students are allowed to select analytical modules
according to their own interests and needs. The language of instruction is English. Classes are held in one of the
universities in the consortium and are delivered by specialists from partner institutions and visiting scholars. The
role of host university rotates annually. Each host offers an intensive course in the local language at the start of
the program, as well as additional local language courses during the year.In the second year students move to a
different university in the consortium located in another European country. The first nine months are spent
carrying out a research project. These are proposed each year by the partner institutions in the fields of
laboratory accreditation, quality management, analytical methods and data analysis. They are integrated with
on-going research projects at the universities and may be offered in collaboration with associated partners of the
consortium. Up to three months may be spent with one of the non-European partners and associated partners.
The work is summarized in a written thesis. The last three months the students undergo an internship in an
accredited laboratory or similar to get a hands-on experience with quality management. The research master
project and the internship period is summarized in a written thesis, which is defended at the end of the study
period. On successful completion students are awarded an Erasmus Mundus Joint Master’s Degree in Quality in
Analytical Laboratories, issued by the coordinating institution and co-signed by the universities the student stay at
during the Master. Details of the modules taken, the internship and the research project are included in a Diploma
Supplement.
