Safety guidelines
1.0 Principle or regulation governing actions, procedures or devices
intended to lower the occurrence or risk of injury, loss and danger to
persons, property or the environment.
 Maintaining Personnel
A Safety personnel is an individual responsible for ensuring compliance
with occupational health and safety (OHS) guidelines in a workplace.
They play a crucial role in promoting a safe working environment by
advising on safety measures, conducting risk assessments, and
enforcing preventativeg measure.

A safety personnel
1.1. Procedures for protecting the safety personnel
1.1.1 General Safety
It is essential that any personnel involved in
maintenance should appreciate the importance
of safety. Without adequate regard to safety
rules, several injuries leaching to permanent
incapacitation or even death can occur. Loss of
property is another result of disregarding safety
rules; it is thus in the interest of the
maintenance personnel to find out the safety
rules and regulations in the place of work and
strictly follow them.
 Prevent electrical equipment from contacting
wet areas.
 Ensure safe use when unplugging.
 Install properly and tidy electrical cords.
 Understand your switchboard.
 Look out for electrical lines.
 Childproof your outlets.
 Investigate Flickering Lights.
 Install warning signs.

2.0 General safety practice in the laboratory

The laboratory in the electrical and computer
department provide students with the best
opportunity to gain practical knowledge .
Students and staff should make themselves
aware of the possible hazards that may be
present in the laboratory
Following are some general guidelines that can
be used to reduce the risk of injury caused by
laboratory hazards
1. Know what you are working with and how
to use it safely, Before beginning any new
experiment, find out about the potential
hazards involved and the appropriate safety
precautions to follow
2.Perform only appropriate experiment and
be sure you understand the procedure
involved before you begin . If anything
unexpected, dangerous, threatening, or
unmanageable happens, immediately call
the instructor or the lab staff personnel
3.Use the proper hoods or other necessary
engineering controls when handling toxic
materials
4.Keep work areas clean and free from
obstructions. Backpack and coats should be
put away
5.Cleanup should follow the completion of
any experiment, return leads etc to wall
stand
6.All chemical containers should be correctly
and clearly labeled
7.Follow prescribed waste disposal
procedures; if unsure call the chemistry
technologists for advice on hazardous waste
disposal
8.In the event of a medical or personal
emergency contact the security
9.Spills and leaks must be cleaned up
immediately without delay. Check with the
lab staff for help in cleaning up special
solutions
10. THINK SAFETY

procedures to help physicians diagnose, treat, and
manage patients. Such labs will analyze and

Chemistry labs deal with solvents, acids, and
other liquids and these laboratories poses
potential dangers for the staff handling
them. Chemistryperforms a wide variety of tests
using the most current technology. ·

commonly used by computer scientists,
computers (sometimes supercomputers)
are used for either simulations or the

of computers that typically are
networked and available to a defined
community

3.2 Basic safety precautions to be observed when

working on a computer system
1.Remove your watch and jewelry and secure
loose clothing
2.Turn off the power and unplug equipment
before performing service
3.Cover sharp edges Inside the computer case
with tape
4.Never open a power supply or a CRT monitor
with the power on
5.Do not touch areas in printer that are hot or
that are use in high voltage
6.Know where the fire extinguisher is located
and how to use it
7.Keep food and drinks out of your workspace

4.Tamper Proof Receptacles.
Electrical safety
Follow the electrical safety guidelines to
prevent electrical fires injuries, and fatalities in
the home and workplace. Power supplies and
and CRT monitors contain high voltage
Rescue of shock victims
1.Protect yourself with dry insulating
materials
2.Do not touch the victim with your bare hand
until the circuit is broken
3. Break the circuit by opening the power
switch or pulling the victim free of the live
conductor

4.0 First Aid

first aid organizations provided first aid courses and
information. In general, there are four things to do in
any emergency requiring first aid
1. Stop all the serious bleeding
2. If breathing has stopped, apply artificial
respiration. Speed in beginning and persistence in
the artificial respiration is essential
3. Send for a doctor or carry the victim to a doctor
4 Keep the victim warm, quiet and flat on his or her
back with head to, on one side
a FIRST aid kits
4.1 HAZARDS OF
ELECTRICITY
Some of the causes of injuries in electrical accidents are
listed below
1. Electrical shock or current:
this causes injury in the following way
 Current flow through head or chest can cause heart
failure, stoppage of breathing(I.e temporary paralysis)
 Falls due to involuntary reactions while working at a
height or injuries due to hitting objects with parts of
body becomes of jerking or falling backwards reaction
The maximum safe current is determined by the current
which allow a person to let go of live conductor. After the
let go level, painful and several shock. Causing muscular
contraction and breathing difficulties occur. Further
increase in the current had been more serious
consequences
4.2 Electrical Arcs,Direct burns and fires.
Heat and fire related injuries can be caused in the following
ways
 Electrical arcs, if not properly interrupted, create
large volumes of ionized hot gases. This can cause
explosions, set clothes on fire and cause serious
burns. The arc also emits extra violent light which
can be harmful to the eyes and the skins

 Burns can be obtained by touching over heated

electrical equipment
 Fires caused by electrical equipment
malfunctioning can cause injuries and
death
4.3 Fire Safety
Follow fire safety guidelines to protect lives, structures
and equipment.to avoid an electrical shock and to
prevent damage to the computer, turn off and unplug the
computer before beginning a repair. Fire can spread
rapidly and be be very cost
Proper use of a fire extinguisher can prevent a small fire
from getting out of control. When working with
computers and components, be aware of the possibility
of an accidental fire and know how to react. Be alert for
the odors emitting from computers and electronic
devices. when electronic components overheat or short
out, they emit a burning odor. If there is a fire, follow
these safety procedures
1)Never fight a fire that is out of control or not
contained
2)Always have a planned fire escape route before
the beginning any work
3)Get out the building quickly
4)Contact emergency unit services for help
5)Locate and read the instructions on the fire
extinguisher in your workplace before you
have to use them
Be familiar with the types of fire extinguisher used in
your environment. Each type of fire extinguisher has
specific chemicals to fight different types of fire
 Paper, wood, plastics, cardboard
 Gasoline, kerosene, organic solvents
 Electrical equipment
 Combustion metals
It it important to know how to use a fire
extinguisher.use the memory aid P-A-S-S to remember
the basic rules of fire extinguisher operation
P=pull the pin
A=aim at the base of the fire, not at the flames
S=Squeeze the lever
S=Sweep the nozzle from the side
